I purchased an '04 Prius package 9 with 13,000 miles on it. The original 3/36000 warranty is gone. Should I purchase a bumper-to-bumper warranty from Warranty Direct.....what coverage is most important?

I don't think you can once the original warranty has lapsed. It has to be purchased while you are still covered under warranty.

I want to know if it is worth the cost. I didn't think Prii broke down.

If extended warranties were good buys they wouldn't be sold. IMO save your money. If the extended warranty is expected to pay for itself then that car is a POS that should be avoided.

I agree with JimN. Also, I don't know anything about Warrantee Direct, but most of these companies go bankrupt before you need them. I lost $1200 a couple years ago on a 2002 pickup.

I still have my factory warranty and am not planning to get the extended warranty (as of yet). I'll try to keep all the routine maintenance done on time myself and hope that the car holds up. I'm at 14K+ miles, so I am well over 12K miles/year ... I will save my money at this time.

I just got this car....it was driven only 12000 in 04-08. So I am considering buying an extended warranty from an independent company (good reputation with BBB, 28 yrs. in business) for about $1000 for 4 yr/85000 mi contract. The Toyota powertrain warranty expires in June 09. How many Prius owners have to use the warranty in the first 3 years??

I'll just quote one of my previous posts:

"I would avoid all extended warranties. As others say, they are insurance against future failures which may give your peace of mind, but they are a bad news financially. Extended warranties are a HUGE profit center for a company which is why you are consistently asked if you want to purchase one. If you want peace of mind, put the $1000 you would pay for the warranty in your bank account as an auto maintenance fund.

As an example: I'm the product manager for an off-road vehicle. We are currently working out the details for the warranty on our 2009 models. We can purchase an additional one year warranty for the engine and transaxle for ~$12 from the manufacturers of these components. Judging from our competitors we can sell an one year extended powertrain warranty to our retail customer for $499. That is $487 profit for a piece of paper.

Yes, some of you will through out antidotal evidence of a time that you or someone you know saved lots of money because you had an extended warranty. While true they are the minority of cases."

They are a profit (huge one) center for the seller. It is basically an insurance policy. Of course there are cases where it pays of for a few people, but most lose,, "Are you fellin' lucky punk?, Well are ya?

Personally we bought one, but it was a 100% refundable teaser if we didn't use it. So far, at ~60k miles we have done nothing but oil changes, and Toyota did HID lights

I bought one from them, and like most people said, its insurance, you don't usually win with insurance.

I researched these extended warranty co's a while back, and all it took was a call to the toyota dealer who said they don't honor any warranty outside of toyota's. Most of these co's just want your money, and when and if a real repair cost comes along they will just say "that's not covered" especially with hybrid vehicles! They don't understand what even goes bad in a hybrid vehicle. Stay away from them. All Rip Offs.. Check the BBB on any company and you'll find lower than good ratings from customers.. BTW the drivetrain warranty (most expensive repairs) is 8 yrs/100,000mi. from toyota. Thats all you really need and you've already got it.

I never buy an extended warranty - not on cars, TV's, etc.

My suggestion. Every time someone offers an extended warranty, put the amount you would have paid for the warranty in an investment account. Use this account for any repairs that might be necessary and you'll still have a nice little nest egg to buy some goodies with when you retire. I've accumulated over $10,000 in warranty "savings" over the years - my total outlay for repairs that would have been covered by the extended warranties - $700.

Im at 33K myself and am not thinking about an extended warranty.

    1. because I lost my job and need my money.

    2. because I have bought extendeds in the past and never ever used a single one. ever.

    bad investment imo.

I just bought one, from toyota. I just bought an 08 from a toyota dealer. It had 42k on it and I got a warranty till 100k or 7yrs. It was a good peace of mind. Also It is transferable and it will help my resale value. I do not plan to keep car till 100k will be selling it within a yr to get volt or leaf. I would not buy a warranty from after market company.
