Today when I was driving home on an offramp I must have hit something with my right front tire. There was a loud boom as if my tire popped. If it was a pothole, it must've been huge. Thinking it was nothing, I checked it out when I got home, but actually found a very dirty tire and a 1.5" lump on the side of the tire (like an old basketball that has a lump). My rims look fine, but that portion of the tire just looks messed up. I'm not sure why this would be the case. Does anybody know what might be the problem? Will the deformed tire return to its natural shape if I just let it be, or should I take this to the dealership and what kind of repair would this be? I also noticed that when I parked my car after this incident, that it sways A LOT back and forth after I lift my foot off the brake - like a baby cradle. I don't know if this is just coincidence or a problem related to my tire "popping." Has anybody experienced their car swaying after you park it? Could there be something wrong with the suspension? Oh god, I was having such a good day - except that stocks TANKED. Thank you!
The lump on the RF tire shows you that the sidewall is damaged. You will need to have that tire replaced by a tire shop. Suggest you call ahead since your Touring tire size is uncommon. It is very dangerous to drive the car with that damaged tire, so if you can install the spare tire that would be good. Otherwise, slowly drive to the tire store. After you get a new tire, then see whether you still have a problem with the suspension or not.
Hey Patrick, Thanks, what exactly is an "RF" tire? (sorry). Also, no indicator lights on my dashboard have turned on afterwards. (Thats the first thing I looked for the second it happened). My tire looks almost exactly like this one: http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/1/2/4/0/2/6/5/webimg/275038350_o.jpg Oh, and what kind of tire specifications do I need? Does it need to match my other 3? How does this affect my services for future tire rotations and purchase of tire sets?
Your R ight F ront tire is kaput. There's belt and sidewall damage... so very unsafe. That was a big hit, so I would also have the shock and suspenssion checked on that side. How many miles on your tires? If they are half or more worn... I would replace the damaged one and the Left Front as well to keep diameters the same. Unless you are dissatisfied with present tires, I would keep the same brand. If you don't like them, I would replace all 4 to the tire brand and model you prefer.
I like the current tires. I have only put about 7000 miles on my tires. I believe my tires were new at the time I purchased the car used at ~10000 miles. They are the OEM Touring Bridgestone Turanza EL400. Would shock/suspension be covered under the warranty?
I suggest you call your local tire stores and find out pricing/availability for one Bridgestone Turanza EL400 tire. With only 7K miles on the other tires, don't worry about changing the tire rotation schedule - just rotate as you would have prior to the tire replacement. While the tire is removed, you can look at the suspension to see whether there's obvious damage. If there is, and if the damage can be traced to your hitting a pothole, then it would not be covered.
Is the treadwear indicator showing on the outside edge of that tire? If so, and the other 3 look like that it is time for a new set. If you bought road hazard coverage you should get a discount on that tire.
You might be able to just replace one tire, but you should ask your service tech or tire dealer. You really need to get an appraisal of current tire wear. Not sure if warranty would cover, but it's worth a try. Have you looked under the wheel well to see if there is any damage?
Called America's Tire: I think I will go there. They quote $133 for Turanza EL400 + installation, but since they don't have it in stock, I'll have to wait until Wednesday at the earliest. Is $133 too much? I know AT is one of the best tire places to go, but it still seems pricey. I'm thinking of going in tomorrow anyways and having it looked at, and might buy a different tire depending on what their advice is, even though I know it won't match. So, what other tires (brands, models, etc) could I consider buying from AT, if I don't want to wait and can find a more economical tire - I'm guessing at the very least it needs to be the same size and type (195/55/16 and 16x6)? I've never shopped for tires. Thanks. Also, when they change the tire, I will ask them to take a look at the suspension too. But I drove around the block and tried putting the gear in park, and so far, no more swaying/suspension problems. The guy on the phone at America's Tire also said its very unlikely it suffered any suspension/shock damage. FYI, Toyota dealership quoted me $205 for the one Turanza.
I think $133 for the Bridgestone Turanza El-400-02 in the 195/55R16 size is within reason. FYI and as a point of reference, TireRack.com sells it for $114 plus shipping. For the reasons stated above, I wouldn't get a different tire or size in your circumstances.
I think the problem posted here is nearing a safe resolution. For visitors to this thread I suggest that bulges (outies) on tire sidewalls mean it's replacement time. 'Inies' can occur in radial tire manufacture, see: Tire Tech Information - Sidewall Indentations, Undulations and Protrusions and are generally not problems. So safety nanny says inspect your tires and correct inflation pressures if needed. Tires keep you safe, but somebody has to look at them from time to time.
