Hi All, I have a 2008 with HID lights which I have imported to Canada after moving here. The driver's side headlight just went out, and I nearly had a heart attack when I learned how expensive the bulbs are to replace. The dealer here quoted about $300 for one. None of the big retailers carry them in-stock, and ordering one bulb still would be around $150. I am looking for alternate sources for these bulbs in the Toronto area. Some of the online retailers are advertising D4S bulbs. Is this equivalent to D4R? I had never really paid attention to HID until now, so I'm a bit of a newbie to this technology. Thanks for your help!
I would get the D4R bulb 4300K because that's the OEM type for your car. Here are three choices: 1. I've read here that Toyota has sent out letters/issued a TSB for your bulbs, whereby Toyota dealers are supposed to be selling your OEM bulb for the "reduced" price of $150 each or 2 for $300. http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-...toyota-will-pay-hid-repairs-i-got-letter.html 2. But I've also read that Philips is the manufacturer of your OEM bulb: http://lusciousgarage.com/blog/prius_d4r_hid_headlight_bulbs_not_free_not_covered_under_warranty/ As you can see, Luscious Garage charges $94 each for this Philips bulb. However, I think you can get 2 for around $80 plus $3.05 shipping to Canada from here: NEW PHILIPS D4R XenEco HID Xenon Headlamp Bulb : eBay Motors (item 260538551479 end time Jan-25-10 18:57:32 PST) 3. You can also buy these off-brand bulbs for 2 for $50 plus $10 shipping to Canada, from the eBay vendor stillenmaxima98. Windstrings has reported that he's satisfied with these bulbs and vendor: NEW 4300K HID 35W Xenon OEM Replacement Bulbs D4R : eBay Motors (item 270485263591 end time Feb-12-10 14:50:06 PST) Finally, check out Windstrings' thread on the subject, which has his written instructions for installing the bulbs, plus a link to another member's installation pictures and instructions for installing the bulbs, plus an embedded video of someone installing the bulbs: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-...7938-my-hid-bulb-replacement-my-06-prius.html Also, as a point of reference, Luscious Garage charges $30 to install each bulb.
I tried a pair of D4S on my 06 Prius and they light for a few minutes and then both simultaneously go out. D4R seems to work for the 06 Prius. Dave
