Hi everyone, my name's Tim. I've been lurking around here ever since I bought my Prius in June but due to my lack of knowledge on forum conduct and an irrational fear of public discourse I never really felt compelled to post anything... until now

*by the way: I did a search but to be honest I don't really know how to describe the problem and keywords didn't help

Anyhoo, a couple days ago I noticed that there was a wet spot on the passenger side front seat (near the upright part) and having no passenger present to spill anything I assumed it was some rain that had leaked in when I opened the door.

The next day, though, when I checked the spot I noticed that it had become rock hard. It almost has the texture of singed fabric... like when you have to replace those little plastic things on the ends of your shoelaces... I mean I know the north coast gets a lot of rain but I didn't know our rain was laced with silicon! It doesn't have a smell either and I can't just pick it out like gum...

So my question is: Is there any sort of material in the seats that would cause this to happen? I'm thinking maybe the material that the cushion is made of? Is there any liquid in the seats? Bladders, pockets, etc... I'm just trying to figure out if I should bring this to the dealers attention or not. Or if that would even help. Any advice would be great.

Looks like sugary water. Try warm water with a paper towel. If it dissolves with the water. It must be a spill with a clear soda.

Honestly it looks like something spilled on it or was transferred from a bag/passenger on the seat at one time or another. I personally would not run to the dealer without first attempting to remove it with some warm water. I can't think or a thing in/under the seat which would stain and dry hard like that.

You should be more selective on who you give a ride to.

Clearly it's a spill. Get some Folex at your home improvement store, and clean it.

I've gotten similar stains in my high school days - but they seemed to always appear after a late night at the drive-in.

Maybe begin practicing safe driving, or some type of rubber cover...

IMHO - the color Toyota chose is crazy. Almost white, and poised for nothing but stains. Either get seat covers, or put in leather (and choose a darker color).

I was being serious. A little off-topic and irreverent, but serious. Check it out:

Reminds me of when my wife had a gallon of milk lying sideways on my Sienna's (cloth) passenger seat. It leaked--a lot--soaking the cushion. I removed the seat from the vehicle (unbolted it), and washed, as best as I could, using Woolite, the cushioning material and the seat fabric, then squeezed and wet/dry vacuumed as much moisture out of it as possible. Then I "Febrezed" it all. I never had an odor or stain problem after that, but then again, I had caught the spill early, before the milk soured.

If you go the seat-removal route, be sure to know the bolt torque for re-installation (I don't for the Prius, sorry), and remember to unhook and rehook the wiring harness(es) to the seat.

You could always take it to a real good auto detailer in your area and ask them about it?

Wow... I came looking for advice and I found out I have a holy relic.... classic!

Anyway... as I said there is no smell, scrubbing it does nothing and there was no one in the car to spill anything in the first place... but thanks for the advice

I guess its time to get seat covers

You should at least make a pass at Toyota. If it won't clean up, no one was in the car, you didn't spill anything the possibility exists that there is something in the rubber cushion that seeped through. If that happened, perhaps there is some proof of that still in the cushion.

I would hate to see any aftermarket seat covers on that car. They hardly ever look as good as the factory seats unless you spend a decent amount of money.

I bet a good auto upholsterer could just replace whatever piece is stained and it would not be much more than replacement seat covers.

Good luck! I hate when something almost new gets marred.

I remember reading NOT to use seatcovers--prevents proper function of the side air bags. The closest I can come in the manual is the diagram on page 113, showing the position of the airbags, and on page 124, SRS Airbag Precautions. One point reads: "Do not use seat accessories which cover the parts where the SRS side airbags inflate as they may interfere with inflation of the airbags." I am certain I read something specifically mentioning seatcovers, but like most of what I try to find using the index I can't find it!

Normal seat covers are generally a no-no, but all those I have ever seen designed specifically for the Prius are compatible with the air bags.
Just make sure you use covers that made for the Prius and that are compatible.
