I don't know if any of you have the KARR alarm installed on your Toyota from your dealer ... I got it because for $200 it was the same price I was going to pay to put in a system on my own. (I want an alarm with dual stage shock sensor ... I can hear it go off from my apartment so I know when people hit my car!) Anyway, what really annoyed me about it was the horn honking when arming and disarming.

The car already has the softer beep-beep and that's plenty for me. The instructions mentioned nothing about disabling the noise ... but I googled around and found the answer on a Mazda forum.

I posted the sequence on this thread ... check it out if you have this alarm and want to rid yourself of the annoyance:

    http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-prius-audio-electronics/47023-alarm-horn-beep-disable.html

I am so damn happy it's gone! :bounce:

(And yes, the alarm still works normally .. shock sensor does its thing, etc.)

Hope this works...I hate that beeping and my dealer told me I have to bring it in, which of course I don't want to do! I'll try it later today. Thanks!!

Glad to help! This forum has everything on it but I was surprised when I didn't see anyone else mention this annoyance.

I have my car setup just the way I want it now. :) I just need to call Toyota and give them a hard time. My dealer says they were told by Toyota NA that they should not disable any "safety features" on the Prius. (Backup beeper and seatbelt reminder.)

Hmm...didn't work for me. Here's what I did.

Opened door, got in car, closed door. Hit my Power button to turn the car on. Hit my Power button to turn the car off. Hit the button under the dash 3 times. Nothing happened. Tried it a few times with no success. Did I miss a step or something?

Who's your dealer? I went to Pasadena Toyota (even though I bought mine in Manhattan Beach) and they did the backup beep for me. Manhattan said no way...

Hmmm ... Here is what I did exactly:

    - Got in car, closed door
    - Pushed power button twice (with foot off the brake ... ignition is on but car isn't ready)
    - Pushed power button again to turn off
    - Pushed the valet button on the blue LED thing 3 times

I heard a couple of honks of the horn.

I did it all pretty quickly .. like ignition on, then off within a second, then I pushed the button on the LED thing 3x right after turning off the car.

Do you have the "High Performance 3" system?

Hmm...I started the car when I did it, but otherwise the same. I don't have the High Performane 3 system...don't even know what that is! haha

High Performance 3 -- it's the KARR system I have. I got some paperwork with the car that had a little manual for it with some other stuff you can adjust... how to use the valet mode, etc.

Your system must not be the same as mine. Sorry I couldn't help. KARR seems like a lame company..... they don't even have a website. (That I could find at least.)

Ya, give it a try trying to be faster (or slower maybe?) I managed to get it on the first try... Unlike setting the lock preferences on the car! I just could not get that to work until I read on here to count the second tick marks on the clock.

the instructions given thus far are correct. Just make sure when you go from turning to "ON", then "OFF," that sequence is done with 3 seconds. I've done it to my car and the steps are in the HP3 alarms owner manual as well. I also have the HP3 (High Performance 3).

    sequence:
before you start, make sure your certain you can locate the "valet button" of the alarm system. It is the button immediately behind the flashing led. Usually placed at the lower left corner below the dash (steering column). Upon pressing it, you should feel a slight click.

1)Press "POWER" 2 times, then within a second or two, press "POWER" again to turn off vehicle (does not matter if brake is pushed in).

2)Tap the "VALET" button 3 times and let go.
You should hear 2 honks from the horn to confirm "horn honks are off when locking/unlocking via keyfob.

Just remember the sequence between POWER on than OFF must be done within 3 seconds.

If in the future you want the honks back on when you Lock/Unlock your car, do the same thing. Accept after tapping the valet button, you will hear 1 honk to confirm steps are completed.

Tried it again in On, but not Ready mode and it worked great. So glad I didn't have to run to the dealer for this! Thanks!!

I bought my first Prius two weeks ago, and at Financing they told me the Prius had no car alarm. I was shocked, and asked "You mean not even a blinking light?" "No." So I ordered the KARR alarm system only to soon after see that there IS a blinking light on the dash when the car is locked. No shock or break sensors but a starter disable if you don't have the key. It was the only part of my transaction that felt a little shady.

As far as the KARR beep sound, the system does have a silent mode thankfully which will limit the alarm to the Prius' built-in electronic chirp.

I've had to deal with those POS alarms at work sometimes, and there are 3 different Karr alarms that use a blank "blocker" clip or one with a button and a LED lens, depending on which one is installed - red button is a 2040 system for cars sans keyless entry or power locks, blue button are 4040 systems that piggyback onto a OEM keyless entry system, and the green button systems are EX-1 shock sensor add-on for OEM alarms.

You CANNOT use the remote to program a Karr alarm. You must use the valet/programming button as ALL_600D describes - power on/off the car, press the valet button 3 times until you hear the horn chirp and then using the lock/unlock switch on the driver's side door and the number of chirps emitted as the button is pressed to cycle through the options as a guide to set certain features on or off.

Of course, if you want the Karr system totally disabled you can try to have the dealership disable it since you need the dealer master remote and a deactivation "blocker" - if you want it gone, sweet talk a porter or a detailer at the dealership to do this. :p My advice to anyone on this forum that is about to buy a Prius and F&I is trying to force a Karr alarm down your throat, don't. Get the Toyota VIP system instead, or if you feel adventurous a Viper/Clifford system. They're expensive and not worth it.

That is lame they told you no blinking. If all you care about is someone stealing the car, any alarm is a waste of money as the you won't be driving away a Prius without the keyfob. (Towed, yes.....) I got the karr because I like the shock sensor so I know when people mess with the car or if someone bumps into it. Even on silent mode if someone hits the car and the alarm goes off, it beeps when you disarm to tell you this. (And you can check for damage.)

This is not funny, but if someone carjacked you in the Prius, just get out and let them have the car. Keep the fob in your pocket and take off running. At least they won't be able to restart it!
