SageBrush, I'll look into Amica. I insure four cars and pay enough to pay off the national debt. Thanks.

Going from a Tundra to a Prius, my rates went down by about 5 bucks a month. Not significant but hey, it didn't go up.

We just switched to GEICO a week ago after being with Allstate for 4 years. We were able to save $250 off a 6 mo premium by switching when quoting the 2010 Prius we got purchased on New Years Eve, plus 2 other vehicles we already own. The key is to shop around. I researched AAA, State Farm, Farmers, Progressive, Mercury, 21st and they were higher for the type of coverage we have. GEICO for e.g., also gives a 5% discount if you have a hybrid vehicle as well. You can't really compare other peoples insurance premiums with everyone else as it depends on many factors: where you live, how many miles you drive annually, your driving record, number of claims filed, if you're a homeowner, your marital status. Ask for discounts as well such as taking defensive driving courses, if you pay in full or do automatic payments, if you have a multi policy (homeowners/renters/RV/Boat etc.) also depending on your state there are discounts if you do paperless billing (for those who prefer online management of their policy), if you're a member of an association (e.g. AAA, AARP), good luck!

My wife just went from an 03 subaru forrester with $4600 owed and a value of $6000 to an 07 prius with $18k owed. With a $1k deductible our insurance dropped from $600 to $460. I do not understand how the risk can go up and the premium down but that is what happened. Supposedly it is because of the abs, theft system, and side airbags. As it stands the gas savings were already going to pay for 3 months out of the year at todays prices and now the insurance is going to pay for almost 1 month.

The repair costs for the brand of car comes into play along with theft likelyhood. You are also a victim or beneficiary of what type of people typically buy the type of car you have. The class of people who buy a prius are different than those buy a subaru in what they do with a car how they treat it and how many wrecks they are in ect. Its not all about you personally.

I have State Farm and my insurance went up $5.12 a year going from a 07 Prius II to a 2010 Prius IV. Yes only $0.43 a month increase.

I came from at 2006 BMW 3 series paying $64/month for 100/300 coverage. When I got my 2010 Prius they wanted to bump me to $93/month! I know rates in Las Vegas are some of the highest in the country but that was ridiculous. After I peeled myself off the ceiling I started shopping around and was able to get the same coverage at Met Life for $49. I was quite pleased. I also think shopping around for quotes every year is just a good habbit.

For those out there who live in PA you might want to turn those in. Under PA state law accidents less than a certain amount are not chargeable accidents It is somewhere around $1100 currently. It goes up every year with inflation

I pay $411 a year on my 2010 through Erie Insurance.
BTW that is with limited Tort.
My old clunker an 87 Volvo wagon was around $250 a year for just liability. With my 97 Volvo 960 (Full coverage) my total yearly premium is $705.

I also got an insurance increase when last June I switched from a 2007 Lexus IS350 to the new Prius :(
I was not amused and I complained to my broker to no avail. That is what Allstate was charging...

I have $1,000 deductable, and my rates are higher with the Prius, than with a 2003 Mercedes E320, which surprised me. I pay about $896 per year in Pennsylvania.

I just changed companies when I got my Prius. I had esurance with my Acura and had switched to them from progressive before that. When I had progressive I was paying like $200 a month or something insane, so I switched and it was a little cheaper at esurance. Then it went up to $200 something again. Then went back down the next period. When I switched it was costing me $170 per month with my Acura. I'm now with Nationwide for my Prius and I'm only paying $77 a month!! I was so excited! I did shop around and everywhere else I looked was still over $150 a month. It's crazy how they can be so different in what they charge you.

Wow you guys are pretty good rates, I end up paying 1048 a year for my insurance through nationwide. ended up going down $50 a year from the 06 prius to this one. When I went shopping a year ago, Nationwide was the best prices for me. Going to be shopping around in May when it comes time to end this policy. Good old state of PA... ya right.. :)

I think that there are too many variables to be able to compare what different people in different parts of the country pay. You should shop around to different companies in your area to find out the actual difference for you, there. I would increase the deductible to $500 which is probably the highest you can go if you have financing on the car.

That said, I pay $222 every six months for full coverage on my 2010 Prius, $275 every six months on my 2005 Smart Car and $158 per year (annual premium) on my Honda moped. We also have homeowners with the same company on our house. My wife insures her VW New Beetle TDI with a different company and she pays a little more than I do but less than it would cost her to give up her experience discount with that company to move to mine.

Don't move to Rhode Island if you want lower car insurance.
Everything in RI is expensive (housing, insurance, taxes).
I'm 49 years old with a clean record. I pay over $1000 per year. I shopped all around for the cheapest car insurance.
When my 2 daughters graduate from high school and are off to college, I am getting the hell out of RI!!!
