All weather mats!! Whats best???

Considering Toyota isn't currently producing or selling an all weather mat, my recommendation is Weathertech. Excellent product fair price.

 

As a new Weathertech owner, I should chime in here. I have received 2/3rds of my order meaning I have the one piece rear and cargo. Very interesting mats. They can't fit any better; they really look stock! And the lip should come in handy for the snow brought into the car. I know I could have a little spill in the hatch (potting soil, half a bottle of soda) and not be worried.
It's just that it's taken since Nov 19th to receive 2 of 3 items and your cc gets charged when you order; not when the items are shipped. Maybe this is a weathertech.ca problem and not a weathertech.com one.

 

They fit better if you remove all the mats from the car. That is, if you remove the carpet mats. I did that for the driver side for safety, of course. I thought I could keep the passenger and back seat mats. But it turns out I have to remove those too. Now I have a set of carpet mats with no use.

Not Weathertech's fault of course.

 

There is no one shipping a good mat for the Toyota Prius at this time. I wasted money on the Toyota OEM Weather mats when I bought the car. Then I wasted more money on the Weathertech mats. Here are Pros and Cons of both.

Toyota Weather Mats

Pros: The mats are a soft rubber that feels good and they have a no slip surface. They have fins to keep the water from shifting from side to side. The fins also stop your feet from sitting in a puddle of water and your slacks from absorbing the puddle.

Cons: The do not side walls. Any water the mat collects drains on to the carpeting underneath. HUGE FLAW.

WeatherTech Mats

Pros: They fit great. They have sidewalls to keep water from leaking into the carpet.

Cons: The mats are very slick and are made of rock hard plastic. It is like putting your feet on hard plastic. They do not have fins, so the water will shift from side to side and over the nice sidewalls. Because they do not have fins your shoes will sit in ½ to 1 inch of freezing cold water. Your pant legs will fall into the puddle of water and soak up the water. Another flaw is the border that goes around the mat is not the same height. On the left side it is very low and as the mat collects water it will leak all over your carpet.

Toyota’s core competence is designing cars. I understand why they are not good at designing weather floor mats to accommodate bad weather.

WeatherTech core competence is to design a mat to handle bad weather and harsh conditions. They dropped the ball on their Prius mat. I predict WeatherTech will not be around for very long. Their lack of research and quality will be their demise.

 

I use the Weathertech mats. I am not endorsing it. But, to get around the problem, I toss paper towels (Starbucks, Seven Eleven, etc) onto the floor. The towels soak up the water as it melts off my boot. At the next stop I pick up the paper towels and throw them away. Add more if necessary. There is a limitless supply.

It may not be the most elegant way but I really don't like driving on top of a pond of water. Also, my way, the cost is zero - assuming you visit a fast food store every once in a while.

And on the days I am wearing a suit with leather bottom shoes? I wouldn't be stepping on so much snow and I wouldn't need paper towels. So no problems and no paper towels there. The car looks respectable those days too.

 

I am looking for all-weather mat for the cargo area, that also covers the seat backs (up or folded down). I had come across a conversation that had links to several options, but cannot find it now. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I don't know of any that would fit your specification. The best I can think of is a moving blanket unless your stuff is so wet that it may soak through a moving blanket. Then a tarp at any home improvement store would be my suggestion.

I think it is hopeless. Such things (a all weather mat that cover seat backs) don't exist. They don't make it for SUVs and minivans. If they don't make it for SUVs and minivans - the traditional wet stuff carriers besides pickup trucks, it is unlikely that they would make it for a passenger car. A Prius is not a car most people would use to carry wet stuff - so the market will be small - so there would be no incentive for a mat manufacturer to make it - and if they make it, the market is small so a high price would be needed to recover tooling costs.

 

I was looking at the Weather Tech "Floor Liners" has anyone tried them?

They seem to be much heavier than the "All Weather Mats."

 

Canadian Toyota mats are soft rubber with deep ribs and side walls.
They seem well suited for controlling snow and water.

I have the liners, front, back and cargo. They are better than the Weathertech mats in that there is something of a lip all the way around the edges (except at the back of the cargo liner).

 

Those mats look great. I wonder how I can order them?

Sorry, I was responding to a question about Weathertech. I have Weathertech digital-fit floor liners for front seats (two pieces), back seats (one piece), and the cargo area. All are in grey, they go well with my dark gray interior, since the floors are not as dark as the seats.

All those Weathertech products are available at the PC Shop.

The Weathertech mats are great if you never get snow, ice, water, or mud on them. If you do plan on getting them wet, they are horrible. If funny that a company called Weathertech can not design a mat that stops weather from getting all over the carpet.

 

This has not been my experience so far. It's an El Nino winter, so we've had more snow to deal with (well, only rarely like Cleveland ). The Weathertech LINERS (not the MATS I think you refer to, they are different products!) have captured snowmelt off my boots well. I have not looked at the fixed carpet under them very often (but it seems to be protected), I have not had rear-seat passengers so far this winter, and I have not put snow-covered items or had spills in the cargo area, so your experience may be different. I could see that the lack of a lip at the rear of the cargo liner (for load and unload ease) could let an excess of liquid escape under acceleration.
