What is your fuel tank range poll?

My average return commute trip (less traffic, less hectic) is currently 4,35L/100km (not calculated, add 5% for true values), or 54mpg. This since Sept. 24th.

The lowest value is 3.3L/100km-71mpg (once) and 3,4L/100km-69mpg twice. Otherwise I am around 4L/100km-59mpg.

I have no idea how I manage such high FE....

 

Do you really have to be caught before you have broken the law?
I might rob your house, that will be fine as long as I don't get caught. Right?

 

I'm glad that this discussion is going on. I thought I was going crazy. When I picked my car up at the dealership the monitor said 575 miles to fill-up. Every fill-up since then (5 months ago), the mileage goes down. Today's fill-up said I have 428 miles to the next fill-up.

I must say, this is bonkers. My Camry Hybrid after 3 years was always between 465-510 miles per full tank of gas.....17 gallon tank. I know the Prius should be lower, as it's a 12 gallon tank, but it doesn't seem like the Prius is doing much better than the Camry Hybrid. I always fill-up between 1 and 2 bars, and can never put in more than 8.5 gallons.....for a car with a 12 gallon tank. When I asked the dealership, they said that at 1 bar, the tank always has at least 3 gallons left......to help avoid running out of gas. It's an annoying feature and does not help with monitoring fuel economy.

 

What MPG are you getting?

The reason I ask is the vehicle might be calculating the range based upon MPG. The fuel tank is fixed but MPG varies based upon both driving conditions and style.

I regularly drive approx. 950km (594miles) and fill in about 42 liters in a gen II Prius. My "longest" tank was 1050km in the summer, and my current tank shall be well over 1000km again, for currently I have 4.2l/100km (according the MFD) and I am 500km into the tank.

I definitely get better MPG's on my Gen III than my 2006 Gen II. My driving is on 75% flat, warm weather highways at between 68-72 MPH. My Gen II averaged around 46MPG and My Gen III with 17" wheels is running around 48MPG. From what I read here, I could be in the 50MPG range with the 15" wheels.

I fuel up after around 480 miles with about 10 US gallons when the last pip starts blinking. I could break 500 miles, but based on my experience with the funky Gen II guess gauge, I take no chances.

 

Well, if I might add a little of my own experience to this topic, my general impression is that basically, you can get similar results from a gen II and gen III Prius (I don't know the gen I personally), but it seems to be easier in the gen III. In my gen II, I really have to take care and husband the car as much as I can in order to obtain the mileage I have; there are rules I must conform to. On the other hand, when I test-drove a gen III, it seemed so much easier to get the same mileage; pretty impressive, frankly. But the ultimate consumption limit seemed similar.

 

Would you please list the same parts used between Gen2 and Gen3?
AFAIK, there's none.

You have warmer weather but I have less traffic, I guess it balances out.

I am getting 44 MPG. All my fill ups have been under 10 gallons except one, and my best tank was 50MPG so if I drive carefully I can do 500 miles but only do 420 to 440 on average...:rockon:

 

I got 501 miles on my first tank (refilling up with 9.7 gallons)
Just fueled up yesterday with my second full tank of gas with 1019 miles on the odometer. (refilled with 9.9 gallons)
I'm in Burbank, near Los Angeles and our weather is pretty mild out here. I pulse and glide as much as I can.

I have a Gen III Prius, picked it up on Dec 1st, 2009. I got 501 miles on the first (dealer paid) tank. I got 518 miles on the second tank. Working on the 3rd tank now. I'm averaging about 58 miles/gallon, during mild CA winters and drive using pulse and glide. I'm a very conservative driver, mostly staying in the slow lanes driving between 55-60 mph on the freeways. I must say it takes some work (being very conscious reading the MFD display) to get the car to using the HV battery pack only avoiding use of the engine. It's fun though and I enjoy it. Hoping to get 600 miles on a tank during the summer months, as well as using the Solar Sun Roof a/c option. Will report back again with fuel data from time to time.

I'm wondering if anyone else out there has trouble filling up their tank? The problem is much more pronounced in the winter time. If I wait until there is one bar on the gas gauge, I can get between 7.0 and 8.5 gallons into my tank. The gas gauge show all bars, indicating a full tank. This means I am visiting the gas station between 250 and 350 miles. I believe the tank holds 11 gallons. Where is the rest of the gas, or is the bladder tank just weird????

(In the summer time I generally can fill up the tank with 9.0 and 10.0 gallons, again one bar on the gas gauge when I visit the gas station to fill it up.)

 

I owned a Gen2 with a fuel bladder and you are correct, they are weird. The colder it gets the weirder the bladder gets. I think part of the problem is that the bladder just doesn't flex and fill out the inside of the steel tank when it's cold. Not that it's great when it's warm but it is a little better. I'm glad they did away with it on the gen3, I don't miss it.

 

I filled my first tank after the last pip started blinking. 9.4 gallons for 343 miles. pretty cold weather here (teens and 20s) the last couple of weeks, and I warm up the car pretty much every morning.

 

I have filled up three times between 527-550 klm between filling.
Each time 2 bars left.
Put in between 32.4 and 35.15 liters each time
So far my gas cost is down +/- 35%.
Hoping to improve.
