I've read through this thread one more time and the answer doesn't seem definite. So let me repeat a specific dumb question.

Can I program a SKS fob in a non-SKS car to lock/unlock the doors as well as start in the dash?

We own a base model 2006 with no SKS. I have a chance to buy a SKS fob for $25, which is attractive. The seller (whom I don't know personally) is probably not the owner; they claim to have "found it". So while it could be stolen goods or have its counter pushing 128, I don't think that matters in a base non-SKS car.

However I'm not sure that I'll be able to program a SKS fob to remotely lock/unlock non-SKS doors. If it's a different procedure, can anyone point me to it? if it's the same procedure, does it work reliably?

I understand there are still issues with the metal door key, but I know how to handle that part. And this would be our fourth fob, so I don't have any motivation other than the ridiculously cheap price.

So has anyone besides RapidRoy been successful in programming an SKS key? I have a 2005 Prius with SKS that I need a second key for. I'm debating whether I should get a new Silver Logo key and hope that I can get all of the functions to work, or just go for a Black Logo key that will open, lock, and start the car.

I have an '06 base model. Last week I lost my keys. I found this post and ordered a "new" key off ebay. It arrived this afternoon and the directions worked like a charm. I was up and going within 5 minutes. I wasn't even wearing socks. Rather ironically, this morning our one working fob came unprogrammed. After I had my "new" key up and going I ran over to the dealer to see if the old fob just needed a new battery. Alas no. The dealer offered to reprogram it for me for $98. Ha! I said. Give me 2 minutes and I'll show you how. He was amazed.

Thanks! That was a total of $240 I saved!

Was it really a coincidence that the other fob failed right after or did programming the new fob cancel out the other by changing the code?

I was wondering, how frequent is this type of problem - where the master SKS fob stops working after you've tried to program an additional non-SKS fob? I think I've seen two references in this thread, the one quoted here and a similar case reported by bizpm above. For mybluegt, did pressing the SKS button under the steering wheel reset everything successfully, restoring full SKS functionality?

I just purchased a used 2008 Prius and it only came with one fob. It's an SKS-fob, which is nice, but I do need a backup. I'd like to purchase a black fob to program as a (non-SKS) back-up following the instructions in this thread... but I am concerned about whether I might mess up the functionality of the original SKS-fob. Is there a real danger of this?

I also read reference to a DELETE function in one of RobH's posts - presumably this is the analog to putting the car in ADD mode. How do you put it in delete mode? I just want to make sure that I don't accidentally do this, thereby inadvertently deleting my original SKS-FOB. (Maybe this is what happened in some of the experiences described above?)

    Thanks!

The delete problem occurred back before this tread existed. I think what I did was to do 6 of something that was supposed to be 2. In documentation for other Toyotas there is mention of a number of functions, such as delete, add, verify, report key count, and maybe a few others. When the one I tried didn't work, I just tried a number of other permutations. One of them was delete...:mmph: Cost me $50 at Art's Automotive in Berkeley to get everything working (which is still cheaper than my dealer wanted to just add the one keyfob!).

Since then, I've added another dumb keyfob without any problems. Keep to these instructions and you should be safe.

Still working on getting the unlock/lock buttons to work but the start mode was easy. My used black fob was $30 on eBay.

Found two other good documents on the web:
    Smartkey programming
    and
    Remote Transmitters

I replaced the battery in my use fob key but still won't program. When i bought the use 08 prius they said they would get me another key. they use a silver logo key. would not open the doors but would start the car. I had to come back and they programed a black logo and took the silver one back. my point is they were able to program a silver logo so why can't i? my origanl is black logo

i'd like to add that the car probably came with two keys, dealership added two for a total of 4 so i should still have room for one more and even if there were 5 added the first one should drop off.I'm not sure if they tried to add more than one key since they had trouble with the silver logo key. couldn't get the doors programed i'm sure.

I have just purchased a used 2008 Prius which I am trilled with however, it only came with one Smart Key Fob and Key. The logo on the fob is silver. Is there another place to get another FOB and key so I will have a back up if needed?
    Thanks for your response

Thank you so much for these instructions! My used car only came with one key fob so I ordered one from ebay on Monday and it came today (Thursday) and it is programmed and tested... Awesome!

Hi - new here, first post. (2004 basic Prius w/59k miles, owned one week)

First of all, thanks for all the great info. I successfully programmed my non-SKS key fob (ebay purchase) last night using instructions found here. Therein lies the reason for my post:

Something is different with my car now. The fob works as it should, all functions, and my original one still does as well. However, when I unlock and enter the car, the red anti-theft light flashes on the dash at me, every two seconds or so, until I insert a key. It also does this when I turn the car off and remove the key, until I exit and lock the doors.

Is it supposed to do this? It never did before I went through the programming steps. My hunch is that the previous owner may have deactivated the blinking feature, and my putting the car into program mode somehow re-activated it. If that's the case, I'd like to re-deactivate it if possible. Not a big deal, but it is definitely doing something it didn't do before I programmed the new key, and that's always a little worrisome.

Again, thanks for all the great info, and for any light you can shed on this particular thing.

Edit: I have learned through some searching that what it is doing now, i.e., flashing, seems to be what it should do. Would still appreciate any input on why it wasn't before, and can (should) it be deactivated again. Thanks.

Sounds like a setup option that Toyota decided to not tell us about. It's probably something that Toyota uses (or thought they might need to use) in some market, but not ours. Now, how do I turn the blinking thing off....

If you have a 2005 Prius and only one SKS key, can you buy a non-SKS (Black logo) on ebay and program it to at least lock and unlock the doors and start the car? I know it will not have the smart features of an SKS key. Anyone have any experience with this exact situation?

I recently purchased a "new" SKS fob (silver logo) on ebay, with the hope of being able to program it for full SKS function for my 2009 Prius. After reading through this thread, several times, there appears to be a few posters that claim to have programed a SKS fob to include Smart Key function. Since there are a couple of programing instructions in the thread which differ slightly, I want to make sure that I follow the correct instructions and not later find out that I missed a step and now the fob can't be programed as a new SKS fob with full function.
If anyone has successfully programed a new SKS fob with full function, including Smart Key operation, would you please post the exact steps in the thread or privately email me?
    Thank you.

    Smith 6808,
You mentioned you could not get the smart key functions to work. While I don't have an answer to your specific question, I was curious if using the techniques detailed on this board to if you were successful in programming ANY basic operating functions at all (opening and locking door and starting the car) into the new SKS (silver logo) key FOB you bought on eBay? A back up key with even basic functions would be better than nothing.
