Just got the 5,000 mile service for my Prius 2010 done on 12/22/09. They didn't know anything about the 10,000 mile change interval. They also wanted an EXTRA $37 to use Moibe One Synthetic- what a rip off!

Yes the new direction hasn't been distributed to all the regions yet. It doesn't really affect that much. Instead of doing the next service at 10K you'll do it at 15K.

The upcharge for synthetic is what it is. It's a better oil.

Based on the number of times I've seen people on Priuschat ask how to reset the reminder and the mechanical aptitude and/or interest of most Prius owners, I would say it is a big deal to many Prius owners.

I think it would be really nice if one of the Mods would sticky a post/thread to this forum that contained the basic maintenance resets/customization, like the oil/service reminder, the TPMS reset, changing the door unlock touch pad from just the drivers door to unlock all doors, etc. The oil reminder reset post from Mr. Bill is nice, but it looks like there was a pic of the "indicator scale" that isn't showing anymore.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!!!

Mobil 1 0W20 is better than what?
The 5W20 that the dealer is "not allowed" to use in the 2010 Prius?

Correct, if 0W-20 is available. Per the manual.

My dealer (in SoCal) is still insisting on 5K interval - claim they haven't heard anything from Toyota. So called Toyota USA - they confirmed 10K interval and said notification going out early January.

Question: If oil/filter is 10K will other items (rotation, inspections, etc) in the maintenance also be shifted to 10K, or will there be 5K non-oil maintenance?

I just had the squeal removed from my rear brakes at Burien Toyota, and the service advisor knew nothing about a change to 10k oil change intervals.

Update: forgot one comment the service writer made. The person said that the oil filters wouldn't last for the new 10k change interval. ??? Anyone know if the same filter in the US is used in Europe where they have the longer interval?

Thank you for the info. Great to be a part of such an up-to-date chat group. But one question for those who have driven a Prius for a while: mine is going to be due for its first 5,000 mile oil service in the near future, which seems to me to be still an almost mandatory one, correct? If only to ensure that no debris or other was left in the tank or lines at time of delivery, correct?

If your dealer hasn't received official word from Toyota for the change to 10K intervals, you may still need to take it in at 5K miles until they are notified by Toyota. It may be until February before every dealer has the information.
Otherwise, the first change is 10K unless you meet the severe driving criteria or are OCD'ing about possible metal shavings, debris etc. that you believe are physically damaging the engine.

My advice, and understand, this is purely my advice, is if you haven't changed your oil before 5K, you should do so then under any circumstances. I have read through various threads on Prius Chat and looked at numerous Used Oil Analysis reports that people have posted, and the high silicon content in oil from the first change is enough to make me want it out of there. No way would I leave it in there for 10K.

As for me, I am planning on changing my oil the first time between 1500 and 2000 miles, and will reassess my oil change interval after I have gone another 4K beyond that. Most of this will be sorted out by then, I suspect.

Good info. They say the silicon is 'harmless'. Fine. I still don't want it in there for an overly long amount of time, certainly not 10K, even if it is harmless. If others don't care, it's their car, so it's their decision. For $30-$35 in oil/parts, and a little of my time, I get clean synthetic oil, a new filter, and am worry free.

Excellent news - I'm glad to see Toyota doing the right thing for it's owners and ultimately the environment. We're now literally cutting waste oil and filters in *half* over the life of the car where this schedule can be followed, and cutting the amount of new engine oil required as well!

Any hope this will also apply to Canada?

I've asked Toyota Canada and all I got was:

Should translate to: "Thank you for your email. We received your question and, unfortunately, the information is not available. However, we suggest you contact your dealer service director, as he/she would be in a better position to help you with your request. Thank you for your time, etc."

    Great news!

I'm going to call my local dealership and see if they have been informed of this change.
