What version of the NAV DVD came with your Prius

Ver. 9.1. Picked it up yesterday.

 

If you car arrived the 2nd week of September, it was produced in Japan at least 2 to 3 or more weeks earlier sometime in August.

It takes time for them to leave the staging area and ship across the pond to a US port and then be of loaded and staged for car carrier shipment to your dealer. My estimate is at least 4 weeks from the Japan assembly line to your dealer.

Does it cost money to get a newer Nav DVD? How often are they released? Does the media need to be in the vehicle or can I update my info then give it to my buddy for his?

 

"There are roads in this area with incomplete map data. Turn-by-Turn assistance cannot be provided in these areas." I must have heard that a hundred times.

I don't care if you have 8.1 or 9.1. Toyota only provided us with two disks instead of the four that is needed to provide full coverage in the US. We have stopped using ours. Toyota is a decade behind Garmin with it comes to GPS navigation. For example, you only get three choices of nearby places to eat. With Garmin you can page down through eating establishments along route for the next 100 miles if you want. Plus, Garmin Nuvi gives you the distance from your present location and an arrow in the direction of the restaurant. I put the address of our local Walmart store in the Toyota Nav and it could not give me Turn-by-Turn directions. It's pretty sad when you can't find a nearby Walmart store.

The other problem with the Toyota Nav is the time it takes to get to a destination. My wife said today I was not watching the road because I had to look at the screen. The beeps come to quickly and there is not enough time between beeps. I can find anything I want on the Garmin Nuvi in 3 to 5 seconds without taking my eyes off the road.

It will take Toyota a decade to catch up to Garmin. I'm also a pilot and fly with a Garmin in the cockpit. Garmin has never let me down in the car or in the air.

Our car came with insufficient data 8.1 so Turn-By-Turn assistance is not available on our unit.

 

Haven't had any problems so far using v9.1 I actually like it much better than our portable garmin, but i think i have a lower end garmin.

you have a point though about having limited POI.

What I do is a use google maps on my blackberry to find very accurate info on where a POI is, then input the address on the nav system, and that works fine.

 

My understanding is that those cars with an August '09 build date came with 8.1, and those with a September '09 come with V9.1. Also, I have been told that Toyota will not provide a no cost upgrade - it is up to the dealer. Some have given discounts or provided it at close no no charge.

 

Really not happy - Picked up my new Prius V AT package last night, and beside the fact that the salesperson had assured me that they would turn off the reverse beeping, I also realized this morning that I have V8.1...

I didn't even think to check since I was buying at the end of October... Wrong....

 

Is there a really a 4-disc DVD set to provide complete map coverage? Where?

The 8.1 (and 9.1) DVD has 2 layers, and about 7 to 8 GB of data.
Do you mean one more two-layered DVD would give us full coverage?

Then, why not an East DVD and a West DVD?

My Magellan 1412 covers 50-states, Canada, and many cities in Mexico, with 6 million POI
(not really enough) in less than 2 GB total (on one SD card).

 

I just spent all weekend trying to figure out how to turn the navigation system OFF. Any navigation system that says, "On the way to your destination, there will be roads with incomplete data. Turn-by-turn navigation will not be provided in those areas" is of no use to me. I'm not interested in excuses why my nav system won't work. My Garman Nuvi has never not even once been unable to provide Turn-by-Turn directions.

 

For those complaining about the Toyota nav not being as good as garmin, I suggest that you call garmin and ask why they are so far behind in developing a car that gets 50mpg?

The gps in a prius is just one of many technologies that Toyota must maintain. And since a new car can't be released on a 6 month cycle like a $200 gps, the features certainly will lag behind a bit. It really is comparing apples to oranges.

 

I think I could swallow that if the price differential between factory installed units and the full featured Garmin/Tom Tom/Magellen units weren't so great. In addition the update disk for Garmin is about $70 (Wal-Mart)...a fraction of what Toyota/Lexus gets for theirs. You might want to forgo the update disk and buy the latest Garmin, etc...I think you'll save a few $$ and be happier with the unit.

 

While it is true that Garmin does not make cars, I doubt that Toyota makes GPS's - they must just source it from a third party. Why not just incorporate the Garmin GPS engine in the system the way that Kenwood has with the Excelon DNX8140. Why re-invent a lousy wheel when a really good one already exists?

 

Even better, source the Google Nav app so I can sync my contacts and whatnot wirelessly.
