2010 MPG Stats - Post Them Here

Picked up my Prius on 12/4. My drive to work is 7mi of mostly city stop and go. Temperatures have been between 5-45F. My first tank was 32.9mpg. Pretty disappointing even considering the low temperatures.

About 25% of the tank was drives at 55-65mph for about 30-45min periods. About 80% of the tank was driven in eco mode.

I am going to measure a few more tanks before I have the dealer check for problems.

You will not get 50 MPG in the winter living here in Northwestern Oregon with your 2010 Prius.

TonyWilkey, what psi are you running? Have you blocked the lower grill yet? Those are big, easy items given your short commute and cool temps. Plus, that first tank may not have been truly full at the dealer; you never know on the first one.

New2Hybrid, the eco mode will let your engine shut down at lower temps, and lessen the impact of the climate control on mpgs. eco mode has identical power to the normal and power modes, but requires more movement of the pedal to get it, making it seem sluggish for sure.

The MPG on my first tank wasn't what I was hoping for either. I too just picked up my first Prius (on 12/6) and am still on my second tank. So, I am waiting to see what my true MPG is.

New Prius owner here. I picked up a 2010 Classic Silver Metallic with the Solar package and I have to say I am thoroughly impressed with the mileage (and the quality of the car in general). I have been playing around and seeing how the car reacts to different driving techniques and today I gave it the 5 person family trip test. My wife and I along with the 3 kids loaded up and drove from Cypress, TX to the Museum of Natural Science in the Museum district in Houston. The five of us together weigh 582 lbs give or take a cheeseburger.

Mostly freeway driving but the average speed was low around 37 MPH. Still, very impressive. I really love this car.

 

Prius II with yokohama tires originally, Put 205/50R17 Continental Extreme Contact DWS tires on during the first tank, pressure at 40 psi max rating 51.

First tank displayed 46.3 mpg, calculated 43.8 mpg
Second tank 42.6 mpg calculated 40.5 mpg
total 44.5 mpg calculated 42.1 mpg

There have been lots of short trips and there was cold weather at the start of the second tank. I'm reading 50 on the display now for tank 3, and expect my normal milage and trips to settle around there. I was reading 38 on tank two for a while and it slowly rose up to 42.

 

Still have a lifetime average > 50 MPG but it is dropping with the temps. See jpg for lifetime details.

 

i am envious of your small differences between pump figures and MFD. when did you take delivery?

 

I took delivery on 7/8/09 (nice date, huh).

As you can tell, I usually run out most of the tank, and all of the fillups at the Speedway are at the same pump, all by me, doing the same thing each time so they should be about as consistent as possible.

 

that is less than 2 months after mine. look at my sig. i am "averaging" greater than 10% difference

 

I see it's not just your last tank but your lifetime so at 6000 miles it should be averaging out inconsistent fills by now. We are at nearly the same mileage as my last fillup was at 6000 even. When new, I had some distance trips at 55 & 70 MPH but most of my driving now is short hops.

 

I think something wrong on your spreadsheet.
I believe the "Calc MPG" and the "Lifetime MPG" on the first fill up should be the same.

I've had my Prius III for just over two weeks now, and have put about 800 miles on it. I averaged 46.x on the first tank, and 40 on the second, during a snowstorm. It handled well in the snow, but I was sad about the gas milage. I've heard people say, too that temperature plays a role. I like it, though, even apart from the gas milage.

I think you're actually getting pretty good mileage. Don't forget the engine and tires need a break in period too. The cold, snow and rain will also impact your mileage. Plus, it takes some time to learn how to drive to maximize your mileage. For someone with a car just 2-3 weeks old, you're doing great! I'll look forward to seeing what you achieve in the summer.

 

I've had my 2010 for 5 months now (and it just passed its 5K mile birthday) and its lifetime calculated average so far is 44-45mpg. The majority of my driving consists of very short commutes to and from the Metro station and suburban driving with a lot of traffic, red lights, and hills. It's rained a lot this year and recently we were hit with a huge snowstorm.

I just got back from a long roadtrip to visit my daughter in Charlotte, NC over Christmas. It was a little over 400 miles each way. On the way down, the route had a lot of traffic lights and I was stuck in stop-and-go traffic for about 30 minutes. I averaged around 48 mpg on the display. Coming back, I stayed on highway almost the entire trip, the weather was slightly warmer, and there were no traffic issues - and my display showed 56 mpg average for the trip. However, I still have not managed to show a calculated tank average of 50mpg.

I filled up once on the way down and once on the way back. On both occasions there were still 3 pips left on the gas gauge. The first fillup reflects my local driving and part of the trip on the way down. The second fillup reflects mainly highway driving but includes some local driving around Charlotte.

It seems that every time I get close to 50mpg or more on the display, the actual variance between my calculated mileage and display mileage also goes up .... so I never reach 50mpg calculated!

 

I finally got my 50mpg tank -- 50.65mpg actually. However, the trip display showed 55mpg -- so that was an 8% difference -- The highest variance yet between calculated and displayed mileage.

 

Owned for not quite 2 weeks now, so it's all winter numbers.

Total miles: 800 - mix of about 75% freeway (doing 70+mph) and 25% "around town" (in the 30-50mph range). Typical drive was about 35miles, one trip was 250.
Moderately hilly terrain - no real steeps but plenty of ups and downs. Total altitude change max 400ft.
->Temps haven't exceeded 45F the whole time and have been mostly nearer 20F. <-
Some rain/snow driving but not heavy - did have to defog front & back a couple times though.
Minimal passenger loads (just me 85% of the time).
No grill blocking but that is very very high on my to-do list.

Total mpg (actual: miles divided by gallons): 44.5. Shutting off the heat for the first 5 miles or so makes some difference, but I didn't always do that. I did, however, wear my down winter coat from LLBean almost all the time.

Displayed mpg: 47.1 (about 2.6mpg high)

 

51.6 mpg. avg speed 35 mph according to trip computer. my best 5 min avg is about 75 mpg. driving about 55-60 on the freeway.
400 miles driven so far. bought xmas eve. display says about 100 miles left before fill up. trying to get 500 miles per tank.
waiting to see what the numbers are like once the holidays are over.
surprised that driving 70 gets me 50mpg.
so far very pleased.

 

had my 2010 almost a week. after half a tank. 48.5 mpg..but its been very cold here in the ATL.
oh a bit of history here..i just rejoined priuschat. had a 2003 which i drove for 3 yrs ave. 50.0 mpg..my daughter is still enjoying this car. its been a winner. thus i have returned from MINI to prius. the contrast is amazing..i loved the MINI, but as much, the prius.
