Unexpected Battery Shutdown

    You are correct, the battery ECU would return the SOC of the battery.
    Battery ECU is in the battery assembly. Each battery section (18 I think) is monitored for voltage, and the current flow is monitored when the relays are engaged. This information is reported back through CAN.

    I wouldn't think the accident has anything to do with it. There are no computers around there. Oh yes there is! The body ECU is in the left side of the dash. It is also tied into the CAN system. But any CAN problem, shorts or opens, should have been caught when checking the system. If it is an intermittent,then that throws a wrench into the whole thing, :cry:

    I don't think the body ECU is tied directly to the CAN, it has to go through the gateway.

    Remember: BEAN, AVC, CAN are the 3 main networks, linked via gateway.

    Ok DanMan32, got me. My bad! ( guess I'm not perfect, :lol: ). Just looked at the wiring and the Body ECU is not tied in. So back to square one, :roll:

    However, in your defense, the Driver J/B may have CAN running through it. The Driver J/B is often seen synonymous with the Body ECU, when in actuality, it is a subassembly of the driver J/B.

    Being that the CAN communication is intermittent, this is going to be troublesome to find.

    The HV Batt ECU CAN comes through ID4 connection, which is instrument Panel Wire and Floor Wire (Left Kick Panel), and it is the only ECU with CAN going through such a connector. The location is right, could have been reconnected insecurely during accident repair. The hatch latch motor goes through that connector too. Any problems with that?

    Strangely enough though, it is a 13 pin connector, but only 3 of those pins contain anything substantial. A few more are CAN ground shield.

    Also found rear left speaker and rear left power window assembly goes through ID4 as well. More I think about it, I'd have the connectors at the driver side kickpanel checked.

    It helps to have the wiring diagram in PDF. All I had to do was look at the CAN diagram, noticed that the battery ECU was the only CAN feed going through a connector. Searched the location of the connector (enter ID4 into Search), scanned around for what else used ID4. Turns out not all references for ID4 came up on the search. May have had spaces in the text or something. Not sure how I came across the window controls, those were the ones that were missed in the search.
    I think they appeared in the overal diagram.

    Um, the battery ECU is also on the left side of the battery
    box, and the harness bringing CAN to it runs in the left side
    floor wire [which really goes through the lower
    doorframes]. Depending on where and how you got hit, any crumpled
    metal could be shorting either side of the CAN bus to
    ground, or something else, and raising hell with communications
    in general.

    CAN is a bus topology. Have any of the techs hung a scope off it to
    watch the waveforms while wiggling harnesses in the
    appropriate areas? That might turn up obvious amplitude
    glitches as things shorted and un-shorted. The two
    signals can be pulled right off the DLC.

    just to let everyone know where we are... had the battery ECU replaced on 6/16/05. drove it to work and back on 6/17/05 - no problem. then we went to the Outer Banks with my wife's car - not ready to trust the Prius yet. drove it around for some errands this weekend and to work today. so far so good.

    more accident info... the accident was on the driver's side about 4K miles and 3 months before the 1st problem. she clipped the mirror and the majority of the damage was to the driver's side doors. one was replaced in it's entirety and one only the housing needed to be replaced. neither window was broken. the main impact point was very close to where the driver's and passenger's doors meet. the door housing on one door (very thin metal!) was torn (it was a glancing t-bone). very minor damage to rear quarterpanel (replaced though). the light on the rocker switch for the driver's window was blinking after the accident (no failure indicators fixed as part of accident repair), i never tried either window until it was fixed not wanting to take any chances.

    i haven't noticed any problems with the hatch.

    don't know if the techs have scoped the waveforms while jiggling harnesses.

    thanks for all of the excellent debug ideas while i was on vacation. i'll have them handy if it happens again.

    I think the ECU located at the door column on the driverside may be the batterey ECU. I don't suggest you start giving toyota any reason to refuse to repalace your car.

    latest news - so far so good - 500 miles and counting. no problems and mileage is excellent. i'll probably feel comfortable when i've chalked up about 2K or so miles.
