2010 Prius Navigation System is really horrible

I had no idea there were so many differences. I think there are some good features, but a little more work could have made it so much better. It suffers from being developed on an ordinary screen on a desk somewhere, without thinking it's going to be half way down a dashboard at an awkward angle! The information is way to small to read at a glance (unless there's a way of customising this). My backup Sony SatNav suffers the same problem, but at least that is on the windscreen and much closer to the line of site.

 

When you push Destination and tell it to search for an address it should list the area it is set for on the bottom of the screen, yours should be set to CAN for Canada. Check pages 50 and 51 of your nav manual.

I don't know how to reset the unit, if it were a desktop or laptop you could just turn it off then restart it. But the nav gets turned off every time we shut the car down anyway,. If it were mine I would eject the disk, shut the car down, then restart the car and reinstall the nav disk. Don't know if that would help, it's just a shot in the dark.

 

Well, it's working again! The computer chip must have been stucked, or there was a DVD read glitch, as the Navigation system rebooted itself without apparent reason while I was driving this morning. Since then, I don't have the input delays anymore! Hopefully it will remain that way... I checked the disk and it does not have any visible damage on it.

I can relate to it. Bought my Prius 20 days ago. Tried NAV and was horrified how bad it was.
First of all, the screen is small!!! for that money that I paid -- rip off.
I used to own an Acura (Acura Rocks!!!) and I was so happy with the NAV and a bigger screen, I just needed a green plates/car to take hwy 66 to work to DC.
Second, the screen is loacated too low, so you need to look down and not in front of you, which creates a dangerous situation while driving.
I used NAV a few time driving to my usual distinations and it took me to the neighborhood with no outlets and made me turn around and drive back.
Another time it told me to drive back 8-9 miles to the tall road when I was literaly only 100 ft away from my house. That was so bad.
Now, before leaving, I'm checking maps on my computer, and on top of that I'm using Googles maps on my 3G phone because i don't trust this NAV on Toyota Prius. What a waste of $$ and time.
It's also lucking some useful options that I had on my Acura navigation -- still miss it.

 

The screen is a good size....honestly...we don't need much more than that...in fact it's larger than most aftermarket units...

As for the misdirect maybe when you had the options of your destination you should see the 3 choices that come up and select one of them and do a preview route, you can also AVOID areas, there are a lot of features that you should try to see if it makes it any better....maybe then you would avoid the:

I used to work in DC/MD and I bought my first Gen 1 from 355 Toyota, with NAV because I got lost all the time....and it saved me so maybe your just not taking full advantage of all the features...

I also own a 2010 Prius, and have had the same experience. On long trips and/or in unfamiliar locations I take along my portable Garmin. The Prius Nav system is just not good enough. It might get you within a mile or two of your destination, but rarely will put you RIGHT THERE. What can you do when it tells you that you have reached your destination, but you are actually three blocks away? The answer: get out of your vehicle and start asking passers-by for help - or turn on your Garmin if you have one.

Toyota relied on someone else to design their Nav system. As the old saying goes - if you want something done right, do it yourself.

 

Most people buy a Prius because they want one, some buy because they have to. When you have to, nothing about it is very pleasing. JMVHO

I haven't found a way to do that yet either. You can just delete everything you wrote and replace it with "post deleted" or something like that. I guess you could PM one of the Mods and have them do it.

 

Interesting comment, but why would anyone HAVE TO buy a Prius - or ANYTHING else other than food, for that matter?

 

According to my nav book for the 2005, the system is designed to announce arrival ahead of actual arrival to allow time for you to find parking. The map display shows how much distance is left to the destination.

 

Yes, but I think the point is that in many cases the addresses are actually off what they should be.

For example, my street the numbers run to 1145, my house is 3rd from the end at 1141, yet when I press the map button to see where I currently am, it thinks my house is almost 10 houses down the block, and at my house it states I'm at 1198 which does not exist on our street and is a fictional address.

 

I understand what your saying, but it's similar to the GOOGLE Maps in some locations, they will show a house address, and in many cases, they are not accurate at all. I know the houses from going to them, and when you see down the street, it will state this is address XXX, and I know darn well, it's wrong. So it's not a Toyota defect, but the map provider most likely.....

 

True... it is probably the map provider data... But, still it is wrong.

 

You are not alone. I've owned a Garmin Nuvi 3-4 years ago and love it. Every other Satnavs my friend have gotten after mine loved my Garmin compared to their tomtom or whatever brands.

The only reason I got Satnav for my prius is because I wanted a big screen for automatic parking assist (which I've not used even once) and for the rear parking camera.

I've used the onboard Satnav probably 5 times? I hate it and hate using it. It is like going backwards compared to a Garmin Nuvi. Onboard graphics is rubbish and not very clear compared to Garmin. The destination time is amazing on a Garmin. I've always arrived exactly the time Garmin says we will arrive in unline onboard satnav it just tell you roughly how long your journey is going to be totally useless and the number is so small you have to focus to see it.

I've owned my prius for nearly 3 months now and every time I get into my car this onboard Satnav bothers me to no end. Oh the worst is it ask for post code but then it never asks me for the house number unlike Garmin. Also Garmin when given turn direction it tells you the street name as well instead of just turn left or right.

 

There is no map provider that physically maps each house or building on a block. All they do is look at the number range and divide equally or by some algorithm, resulting at what they hope will be rough approximations.

 

Driving home from work, I call my wife (Voice Commands work very well) and she says I should get some food for myself on the one-hour trip home.

So, I try finding a Burger King (or some other brand) while driving.

One gets a very limited choice of just a few (often 3) items, with no indication of how far away they are, or what direction they are in. On a route, they may be "well" behind you. And, even along a long route, it might find ... nothing. If you do choose one of the offered choices, it could tell you the distance and direction, but it just displays the POI on a map for you to accept (or not). The problem is, this map is zoomed in too far so that you cannot tell where the POI is in relation to where you are (or are going). The map should at least show you where you are and the proposed destination on one screen. A "Show Path" command would be useful. So, as is, the whole while-driving POI "search" seems essentially useless.

Yes, Toyota's Nav software (all on the dual-layer NavDVD) needs MAJOR improvements.

 

i think a few actually cross reference property records as well. problem is, not all public property records are formatted in a way that allows easy conversion by software. those that dont probably suffer the inaccuracies.

in time, i think house #'s will become more accurate as record keeping comes into the 21st century.

in my area, i can easily search public records online, but the information is riddled with mistakes and inaccuracies, including house #'s
