Tried searching with no luck. I am finishing up my new navi install in my V w/ JBL and I seem to have a few issues. Besides the reverse and VSS wires apparently not working (I think the wires were too small to tap so I'm not panicking.....yet) I noticed I have lost ALL use of steering wheel controls. I assumed the vol, mode etc... side would not work but I have also lost the disp, trip, and temp controls. IS THIS NORMAL?????
You did? What the MOFO! Nah bud, you should still retain all other controls except for audio. Totally not normal! Hope you didn't accidentally splice a wire or perhaps tap into a wrong wire. Drive it down to San Diego, I'll help you diagnose the problem. lol. jk.
Perhaps I missed a plug somewhere then....I was working in the dark with a damn flashlight. The only wires I tapped into were the violet VSS wire (Pin 3, gray plug) and the pink reverse wire (Pin 5, same gray plug) the I tell ya what, I'm OVER this install. And like I said earlier VSS and reverse cam aren't working right now because I don't think my taps were small enough to really splice into those tiny wires from the factory harness. At least that had better be the case. Kevin
It should also be noted that I haven't TOUCHED the steering controls yet either. No PAC SWI installed or anything like that. I was planning on finishing that up tomorrow. Anyone got anymore ideas???
Did you buy a Toyota PAC wireing harness? If YES then why are you taping into these other wires? The Pac harness includes all the necessary cables and connectors required. including dimmer control orange/white wire. Jim
You should not need to do anything with a wiring kit. Maybe you didn't plug it in - and it's lost in the dash space? I believe there are 4 sets of plugs needed to go into anything aftermarket - one of which has steering... What did you add? Factory Toyota? If it's anything else, there is normally a setup feature to program the buttons into any aftermarket unit...
The wiring harness I am using to connect the pioneer to the factory harness is the Metra TYTO-01. This wiring harness is supposed to let you use the factory JBL amplifier, and it does work (kind of) I plugged it in and connected two sets of RCA's to my HU and I have sound. I plugged everything up just to make sure all was working before I tied everything up permanently and realized none of my steering wheel controls work. Like I said I assumed the radio controls wouldn't work but the display, trip etc.. don't work either. I was hoping I may have missed a wiring harness or accidently unplugged something but it appears everything is plugged in. I'm not sure I'm following you RROLFF. I didn't "add" anything. This metra harness only uses 1 of the factory harness found going into the factory radio - all of the others are just tucked back behind the radio.
Holly Molly....Check for blown fuses..Also can you expand on your comment "Kind-Of" Good Luck and Regards Jim
Can you explain exactly what you are doing - I'm now not clear... Most aftermarket widgets will need more than one factory cable. I know my aftermarket plugs into (4) of the existing factory cables. From memory, the cable that plugged into the steering function was big, but on the aftermarket side, there were only like 4 wires going out of it (from the Toyota side there were many wires - the adapter cable used only like 4. Again, my stereo needed all 4 cables - these previously plugged into my stock (low end) Toyota stereo... If you are only using 1 set of the 4, there's something up... What are you adding - what are you doing??? Edit: and by the way - there's no way this is a fuse issue.
I feel really sorry when I see your problems... lesson 1 : never do what I did, unless you understand fully the risks. lesson 2 : do not work if you are not in good conditions for working : too cold, no light, no time to spend & so on.... lesson 3: don't forget your lenses (that one is for me).
I'm trying to use the factory JBL amp to utilize all 8 speakers. The ONLY way to use this is to utilize a harness manufactured by Scosche, or Metra or PAC. They all (from what I gather) do the same thing - allow factory jbl integration with an aftermarket HU. I am using the Metra TYTO-01. The Metra TYTO-01 plugs into the 20pin harness in the dash. That is the ONLY harness that is used in the dash. EVERY OTHER HARNESS that comes out of the factory radio, EXCEPT THE 20pin harness, is not needed. I plug the Metra into the 20pin, connect 4 RCA's to the RCA outs on the Pioneer and I have everything, plug and play.
I am VERY sure (99+%) that there is a connector with lots of stuff (speakers etc etc), and the connector for the steering is a different one - one which my HU (or any other) only needs like 3 wires. Your Metra is missing a cable - or the steering cable is sold separately. You *must* use more than the one harness. There is no getting around it Now go get the right cable.
Figured out the issue. My car has TWO 20 pin connectors. One is the standard radio harness on all Prius's; the other is found on JBL cars. The standard 20 pin harness has the wires for the steering wheel controls. I was scratching my head trying to figure out the issue and figured I would read the PAC SWI-PS instructions for clues. The first step in the wiring of the Pac SWI is to GROUND Pin 6 of the 20 pin connector. That was it......it just needed grounded. After the pin was grounded the controls on the right side of the steering wheel all started working again.
Pics to come very soon. I'm an RN, working 3 12's this weekend so I won't be able to post until Monday/Tuesday. Stay tuned!
