Love the new Prius but hate Toyota's Navi system. Anyone have any ideas on how difficult it would be to add an aftermarket double din Navi to the 2010 Prius II? Would there be obstacles behind the stock base stereo system that would prevent a standard double din Navi to slide in? Can the touch tracer for the audio control be integrated with an adapter much like a standard steering wheel control button to the aftermarket Navi? Im not concerned about the faceplate adapter as any car stereo shop worth a lick can fabricate one to make it look OEM.

I know these questions are very technical but I would appreciate a response from the Prius expert board members.

If the aftermarket unit understands AVC-LAN, you may be set. Otherwise, probably better off w/ a Garmin unless you can accept losing some functionality.

We're not 100% sure these are double-din either.

For the steering wheel touch tracer, I was thinking of just a simple ie bus by PAC SWI if the signal is the same as a standard steering wheel control button.

Anything fancier than that which would require a major hack of the AVC-LAN I dont think would be necessary as the Prius head unit seems to be dedicated only to audio and does not control the Temp/AC, airflow fan, defrost, etc.

Please tell us why you hate the Toyota Nav system.
    Thanks.

    1. Does the Toyota Nav system have Traffic Information Service" which informs you of accidents and traffic congestion on your intended route and provide alternative routing?

    2. Does the Toyota Nav system tell you what the current gas prices are of nearby gas stations?

    3. Does the Toyota Nav system provide you with news, stock prices, weather, local events, and local movies & show times.

    4. Can you make changes to the Toyota Nav system while in motion?

My Garmin Nuvi can do all these things and costs less than $ 300.

    Keith :)

    The Lexus models have XMWeather

and G-Book in Japan offers everything else you've listed. So yes it does... just not in North America lol.

Please guys, no bashing of the Prius Navi. Lets just say that Toyota dropped the ball on theirs compared to other OEM and of course aftermarket ones.

Can we just keep this thread about the technical difficulties/aspect of replacing the radio head unit with an aftermarket one for us CAR AUDIO enthusiasts?

I just spoke with a sales manager at a dealership in the Seattle area and he said that they've already retrofitted 2010 Prius IIs with some Car Toys (regional car accessories retailer) aftermarket equipment that had the radio/BT/Nav for under $2,000...

Here's my take: If you spend the extra grand for 2010 Prius III, you get all that minus the navi AND the controls are factory on the steering wheel.

I bought a TomTom 130S refurb on Amazon for $70 that does a decent job. I'm going to buy the III to stream my BT music, controlled by steering wheel, and wait for a replacement for less than $1,000 that will...

-Include the Navi in a double DIN radio replacement
-Be able to utilize my factory steering controls
-Include HD Radio (which is in its infancy)
-hopefully, include WiFi as well for Internet Radio (which will effectively put Satellite Radio out of business)

I'm not a know-it-all, and welcome any feedback/devil's advocacy to my post and wishlist. TIA

Only nav models will stream bluetooth audio. Non-nav is phone only. Same with the upcoming USB connection update.

Just spoke with my large regional dealer and their leading edge audio people from Car Toys, and here is the deal:

-This 2010 is going to sell tons of units, creating serious aftermarket infotainment product demand.

-Compared to the Prius Gen 2, this car is far easier to retrofit the head unit and won't wreck havoc on the electronics, climate, etc.

    SOOO...according to these experts....

    1) There should be a module that will adapt the Pkg. III to allow for audio streaming WITHOUT the factory NAV. If one does not exist currently, it will be available very soon.

    2) There will be aftermarket double DIN head units to replace the radio in a Pkg. II that will, in addition to the radio
    -Permit BT phone calling
    -Include a NAV screen
    -Include a backup camera
    -Permit music streaming via BT

Now, here's the decision we must make:

A.) Do you buy a Pkg. II and retrofit the head unit as per 2), knowing you don't have the sexy, factory phone controls on the steering wheel or the nicer JBL speakers and upgrade the entire head unit later (likely will be under $1,000 installed after the novelty wears off)?

or Do you buy a Pkg. III (without NAV) and ...

B.) Upgrade the head unit completely to something that will do all I've outlined in 2), except now you'll have the steering wheel controls and factory JBL speakers?

C.) Just buy the BT music streaming module (likely under $150 to start) and use the Portable TomTom or Garmin for NAV?

I'm leaning toward C, while keeping my eye on B if the price drops low enough....

Anxious to hear what you all think!

Just bought a Prius II last Saturday. (Yes. My first post to the forum) I am looking to install an after market Navi and bluetooth capability for my phone calls. Researched on line at crutchfield and according to them there are (only) 2 that fit 2010 Prius. Clarion NZ 409 and Dual XDVDN8190.

Does that sound right? Are you aware of any other sites that lets you do similar searches?

    Thanks

I found the same thing at Crutchfield, but after further investigation, there was a car stereo site that indicated that Crutchfield may have not updated their website for the 2010 Prius. That the they just went with the 2009 sepcifications and relabeled them as 2010. OnlineCarStereo dot com has a Fit Guide as well and indicates that the car deck size is a "Corporate Double Din". When you look at the available headunits, there is a huge selection of compatible stereos. I'm looking at the Kenwood DNX6140 to give me DVD playback, Navi, Bluetooth, and iPod controls. I plan on talking to a audio installer in my area to make sure that the information I found is accurate.

Hey everyone check this out! rosenentertainment(newbie can't post a link).com. The release is feb 10th for nav, sat, backup cam, steering wheel controls in one unit. I have installed these in other cars, and they look great and are not that hard to work. They do a great job with matching the factory color, and they use the factory wiring harness(not cutting or splicing). I cant wait for mine to come in.
