My windshield developed a 12" crack form the top middle after a rock hit it on the freeway. I called around and found that the local Toyota dealership (Torrance on PCH, ask for Sean) was the best place for the repair. They matched the glass to my VIN number, so I knew it would fit. Here's was the cost:

    OEM Windshield $375
    Moldings $45
    Labor $175

I just got the car back an hour ago, and it looks perfect. After reading some of the stories on here, I was pleasantly surprised that the dealer was able to do this for about $600. The sales mananger also gave me 10% off everything for the bad luck of this happening on a fairly new 2010 Prius.

Definitely had some bad luck so far. A couple months ago, I had to replace a tire due to a nail right by sidewall. During the replacement, the stud to the lug nut broke off, and I had to get that replaced too (free of charge). Hopefully, things will be smooth from here on out!

Do you know if the windshield is a standard windshield or the acoustic-type?

Which models got the acoustic type?

BTW, a word of advice on windshields. Always go with OEM glass. The aftermarket products, especially Safelite, are junk.

I saw a 60 minutes episode quite a few years ago that said because the glass is part of the structural integrity, it cannot be repaired satisfactorily in the field by a guy in a truck. The truck guy would not have the equipment to properly clean the windshield and properly apply the glue and will get his fingerprint oil all over the windshield and prevent proper glue bonding.

It was a while back I wonder if it is still true.

In the Toyota lineup? Avalon Limited, Camry Hybrid, all Corolla models. I think the Prius does but I'm not sure.

I'm also unsure which Lexus models have it.

I had a small crack (less than 2 inches) in my 2010 windshield. I had it epoxy repaired and it lasted about 8 months. The crack was close to the hood and the clearence inside the shield near the bottom it terrible, so the technician did the best he could. Now I'll have to have it replaced because the crack is now half of the windshield. I'll call ahead to see if they have a 2010 shield.

KTY - I lived in Co so I know about the cracks. Good luck!

I'll take this a bit off topic, but the OP's experience is one that I think is happening more and more with all customer service situations. Customer service has become so scripted with some companies, that people in customer service just don't listen or really follow through on details.

It took me a month and 1/2, to get cable installed. I, like the OP, with his windshield, talked to the cable service STRESSING I need someone qualified and with the tools to do this installation because of A, B, and C...and I would just know the person on the other line wasn't really listening..I'd just get the...we will send a technician out who can install your cable...3 times a different young kid came out and then blankly looked at my residence and exclaimed.."I can't do that!".

Just seems to me that a problem is that Customer Service has become run by underpaid people just reading off cards or scripted to certain responses for certain situations...and they aren't trained to really LISTEN to the problem.

If anywhere down the line someone would of really stopped and listened to the OP, then maybe the windshield wouldn't of been removed and maybe the right replacement windshield would of been obtained 1st. Just like in my situation, if instead just following the robotic protocal of dispatching a "regular" installer, the customer service rep, would of REALLY LISTENED...maybe it wouldn't of taken a month and a 1/2 before I could get cable installed...

Side note: For a month and 1/2 all I could get was Rabbit Ears on my TV and broadcasts of the WB...the show Reba came in really clear...as well as the local Spanish Channel...nothing else...

It was enough to make me want to beat my head against the brick on the side of my residence. It took escalating phone calls and a letter before they finally sent a "special expert guy" who could do the extra things it took get cable installed.

Good Luck with your windshield replacement...I've got to go, Reba is on the Lifetime Channel...
