Never noticed before we got ours. But now I can't believe how many I see every day. Not too many Gen III's yet, but it seems I can't drive a mile without seeing a Prius.

If you want to see a lot of Prius, go visit the SF Bay Area.

Depends on locale. In Manhattan, they are all over. In the boroughs, like Staten Island, they are almost non-existent. Staten Island is the borough of SUVs and minivans.

Jim, I think we (in Northern VA/ Washington area) are in a real hotbed of Prius ownership.

There truly are a ton of them on the road around here. When I go to visit my family in North Carolina, not so much, by comparison.

The captial is the westside of Los Angeles. You can't stand on the corner of any major intersection, turn 360 degrees and not see at least two of them. Tons of 2010's also.

I've just added to the numbers as of Monday. I parked next to a Gen II Prius today just by coincidence. This car is giving the Corolla a run for the numbers.

    Just my 2 cents.

Yep, here in the SF Bay Area they truly do seem to be everywhere. I was seeing them even before we got our first Prius this last Aug. 1. But now, wow....it's like the old days back in the 60's/70's when the VW Beetle was the "car du jour" (ok, I'm dating myself...). We live in Sonoma County, about 40 miles north of S.F., so drives thru Marin on the way to the city are common for us. Some recent observations:

-- In downtown S.F., yellow Prius taxicabs seem to be on every corner. And those taxi drivers run 'em hard, folks. I saw a Yellow Cab Prius flying down the Powell St. hill the other day, bouncing over cable car tracks, zooming around the corner, and stopping in front of a hotel. They're sure as heck not getting the 50mpg hybrid benefit but it looked like fun. :)

-- During a Sat trip to San Anselmo (in Marin county) last week, they were everywhere. The ratio seems to be about one new Gen3 2010 to five or six older models. Going up the hill on hwy 101 south next to the Marin Civic Center, I was behind five of them, with two more behind me! In the eight-space parking lot at my destination 3 of 8 were Prii. And one rockin' young lady in a black Gen3 with music blasting shot around a corner and darn near creamed me.

-- I noticed a new Gen 3 in the fast lane the other day, tailgating the heck out of a Honda Accord to get out of the way (speed in that lane right then was about 74 mph!). Not everyone is hyper-miling. :)

-- And last but not least, at the supermarket over the weekend, I pulled in to an open parking space right between two.....yep, Prii. Both were Gen 2's, and I have to admit our Barcelona Red Gen 3 IV looked pretty darn cool. Both the Gen 2 owners were checking out my ride when I came out of the store. They had lots of questions of course. I have a feeling one or both of them might be looking into an upgrade very soon.

They say people (esp. men) are often defined by the car they drive, and need a certain feeling of being unique on the road. With so many Prii around there definitely won't be a feeling of driving something unique. But somehow, it stills feels unique and special to be driving one! Go figure.

    Cheers,

    Eric

Sorry guys but I've got you beat- the green centric hippified city of Portland, Oregon! :cheer2:
The only vehicle you see more of are bicycles. If I were to honk at every one I saw on my way to work I'd never stop. It really is funny.

    Next would be Subaru Outbacks.

I was there a month ago and it was like 10% Prius. It was cool.

What really makes me smile is whenever I'm driving and I see another Prius coming toward me, invariably they or I wave. I call it the Prius wave. It's like we're sharing a secret or something! Is it just Pennsylvaniana being friendly or is this happening everywhere?

I've done it myself, particularly to other folks with 2010 Barcelona Red Prii.

But around here, they're so prevalent that the population of Prius drivers is very differentiated. Alas, there are plenty of idiots and selfish, aggressive drivers driving our favorite car, as well as courteous and responsible people.

Drivers in the DC area can be real jerks no matter what they're driving. You can be on a two lane road with no passing possibility, going 10 mph over the speed limit, and some jerk will be right on your butt. It isn't just rude, it's unsafe.

lol...u gotta be kidding me. is it possible that until you got yours, you never paid that much attention? your area had an HOV exemption which i contend played a huge part in the demand for that area. the DC area has the greatest # of commuters per capita in the US so getting a car just for that was a big factor

now i live in an area where there was no incentive (at first but then again, the incentive we did get was canceled after a few months) for Prius ownership but Priuses are massively popular here.
last year, as a game we tried to determine the average # of Pri's we saw while crusing Puget Sound. now we werent judging sightings by the mile, it was more like how many PER BLOCK.

acceptance of hybrids and other green tech is the reason cited when the Puget Sound region between Salem Or and Everett Wa was selected for the pilot "Electric Highway" where charging grids will be installed to allow EV's to be able to travel and plug in.

    Is this a contest?

I've driven a Prius since October of 2004. Back then the exemption to which you refer was in place and had been for a few years. Yet Priuses were not ubiquitous then.

I'm sure there are several cities in the US where there are a lot more of these cars on the road than in other places. DC is one of them.

But I'm happy to concede that Puget Sound is the "winner," if that matters at all.

thank you very much for conceding defeat. but u were unfortunately disqualified due to the HOV law.

anyway, i be serious if u b serious. i would simply call it a reflection of psyche of the population. "green" is a lifestyle choice made by millions in almost as many degrees of commitment. the West "seems" to embrace it more because (a lot of us came from the East where pollution, overcrowding, dirt, smog and what have you was a big reason we dont live there any more) i think we want to avoid the mistakes made elsewhere.

now u can take the above statement as an affront to your personal choices if you want, i cant stop that.

we also had help. several years ago, WA State mandated that all state fleets incorporate alternative fuel options in their vehicles when feasible. several options have been investigated, but the Prius outnumbers all others by more than 5 to 1 in passenger vehicle needs.

    sorry...post partially edited by son....

but u state that u have been driving a Pri since 2004, well back then, they werent prevalent anywhere but not due to lack of demand, it was lack of supply. how long did u wait for yours? i waited 6½ months.

now, there is no doubt that the HOV law created additional demand for the Prius in your area. there have been many people here who admitted as much, same with CA. well, that is fine, if its there, why not? but how it happens doesn't matter now. what matters is that it happened. word of mouth works way better than any feel good ad campaign.

i am glad there are a lot of Pri's in your area. i hope that happens with every area of this country. granted, its not *the* solution, but its the best we have right now.

    just remember...we still won!!

I have noticed a Prius explusion where I live in a small town, county seat with population of 20000. Prius population just started to take off last year. Prior to tha you rarely even saw one, now i see 2 or 3 even 4 a day.
