Seems based on rumblings on the net that Toyota released the latest version 9.1 navigation update last week (September 1st, 2009). Very odd that there are no threads around here about this yet... Anyway, below seem to be the part numbers for the various generations; 86271-GEN04-09 86271-33049 2004-2005 86271-GEN05-09 86271-53024 2006-2009 86271-GEN06-09 86271-73011 2010-2011 Has anyone got their hands on the above yet? Are there any functionality changes aside from the obvious map updates? Thanks...
There are 2 or 3 threads floating around but if I recall, they're mostly asking when it's coming out and what's new. This is the first time I've seen the part numbers. I have an 8.1 disc.
I have an 05, do these discs update any of the interface at all, or do they simply add new roads, poi icons, etc? I have 4.1 version I believe and it's a bit outdated.
New map discs update the software also, and will disable the "easter egg" sequence to allow data entry while driving.A while back there were posts about making a hybrid disc using old software and new maps, so the old trick still worked, but I can' tfind it now. There is also a newer "lockpick" approach to getting around the on-the-move problem.
ALL - got a question for you all. i own a 2008...........I was showing property in Fontana today, in a tract with homes built in 2006. The navigation system did NOT recognize the street and number of the home, i tried all different ways to spell and find the home. Finally had to call someone to MAPQUEST it and tell me the directions. Why is this happening to my navi system? Is this a navi defect or simply an upgrade issue? seems like an 08 car..........built in 07....should know 06 properties and tracts. any help would be appreciated
Welcome to the world of navigation updates. Usually when an update hits the shelves, it is outdated before you've even put it in your DVD slot. With the technology we have today there should be no reason that map updates can't be downloaded OTA. I refuse to fork over $250 for a map update that will not benefit me. I have an iPhone and I use google maps to look up a business address if it is not in my POI database. As for new roads, well I've mentioned this in other threads. When was the last time they built a road in NYC???
From my experience with all the new roads and development around here, and having had a Toyota NAV system for the last 3 + years, it can take up to 3 years for a Toyota NAV update to reflect a change.
Seems like a waste of money then. I'm still rocking 2005 maps version 4.1. I agree about the ota downloads, I constantly double check complicated directions with google maps on my BlackBerry because I don't trust them.
Rather than relying on the internal nav I use a TomTom as a backup. For under a C note you can update the maps every quarter, just update mine. If you want send me the address and I can see if it shows up on the TomTom.
Yeah, I think that's the worst part of the Toyota Nav systems. The updates are poor, slow to be fully update with streets, etc. and TOO EXPENSIVE! For $250, you can get a new portable nav every few years.
That's my plan for my next Prius, hopefully 2011 or so. Not spending for the NAV package because TomTom has great graphics, updatable maps, Bluetooth, MP3. Plus it does windows, acts as an air freshener and subdues backseat drivers. If Roger Federer had one he probably would have won the final against DelPotro.
Looking at the "coverage" zones that the Map Info (in the 2010 Prius, Nav DVD ver 8.1), I see MAJOR areas (most of Nevada) NOT included. Most GPS systems (I have approx. 10 brands/models: Garmin, Mio, TomTom, etc.) have included "all" streets in the USA ("full" coverage) for at least several years. My dealer's Service Dept. told me yesterday that the update DVD was delayed until the end of October (at least), and would cost $299. At that overly-high price, it better have full coverage and at least 12 million POI. Even then, it is more expensive than most non-integrated GPS systems. The version 8.1 appears to be "lacking" coverage, if one believes their own "coverage" maps. Cwn anybody living in those "uncovered" areas to give us some feedback? Thanks.
Thanks for the 8.1 link. It says an update was done for San Diego County. But I tried to find an address in Carlsbad, CA. The housing development is 2 years old and was not in the data base. So I wonder how current any of these updates will be. Certainly not worth $200 if you are trying to find a newer address.
Why can't Toyota have a simple page such as this TOYOTA Navigation Map Updates What vehicle, what country? what has changed? It even gives you stats!
I got a postcard today from Toyota Motor Sales, Torrance, CA offering "The Latest Navigation Map Update" for only $199. WHAT !!! ONLY $199 !!! I Don't have $199 for something that should be FREE. It doesn't indicate a version number. The DVD can be ordered from my Toyota Dealer. After paying $5000 for the NAV feature in 2007, this is the 1st notice I've received. My friend's $200 Garmin GPS only costs him $60 for lifetime updates. If someone has the latest DVD, write me and we should be able to Make A Deal.
I just got the same postcard as well. I've got a 2007 Camry Hybrid, but when I drove my new car home to Alaska, I lost map coverage at the border. Sadly it seems that no online parts dealers are cutting deals on these, they're special ordered from the factory. Yes, I would love to see what areas have been added.
Just got that postcard yesterday... um, no I won't be spending "only $199" to update an already crappy nav system.
I received a post card the other day and will not be upgrading. I'll keep my TomTom as a primary if I go anywhere important. We should be able to download updates forthe Toyota nav considering what we had to pay for them. If I had it to do over again I would have not gotten the navigation system. I love the Prius and I continue to recommend the car but I tell people not to get it with the navigation system. You are money ahead with a TomTom or similar device.
