2010 - Help! Disabling Reverse Beep

BigCwill....I agree it should USER ADJUSTABLE, no delaer involved. I just guess I tune it out like anything else I tune out!
Now if Toyota would make these USER CUSTOMIZABLE, that would be GREAT! How do we make that happen???? :noidea:

 

Your chapter and verse is on page 587 of the manual where it specifically states that your dealer may do this. Anything else is BS.

 

SWEET!! That is exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks a ton! I assume this would fall under "Operation signals (Buzzer)". What other buzzers fall into that category?

 

It's already happened in the Lexus via the NAV screen (2010 RX350 pictured here). If the past is any indication, it'll be a few more years before we see it in Toyotas.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if someone finds an "Easter egg" for this.

 

Hmmm. Just upgraded from a 2004 Prius to the new 2010 model, and of course the first thing I wanted to do was disable the reverse beep -- just as I did with his older brother six years ago. Figured -- why read the manual when you can just google for the steps, which then brought me to this thread and the disappointment that I now have to take it back to my dealer.

Very annoyed at Toyota for this "downgrade".

And (slightly off-topic, but it came up in this thread before) what's with those voodoo "push-and-hold-buttons while standing on one foot outside the car" steps to change the door opening settings? The car (well, my model IV at least) has a nice big touch screen display -- how about putting some "user preference" screens in the system?

 

because they *all* don't have a touchscreen..

 

I just got off the phone with my local dealer (Roseville Toyota -- California) and they said it is now their policy to no longer disable the reverse beep due to liability concerns. Even when I told them the beeping only occurs INSIDE the car, it's their policy.

That's ridiculous. You should call Torrance and say "this dealer
is making you guys look bad".

It sounds like there's high need to work up some sort of hack
for this -- the beeper is driven by some piece of the car's
electronics, perhaps the meter ECU, and gets a "reverse" signal
from somewhere. Appropriate logic could interrupt the signal
to the beeper at the right time. The simplest prototype would
be a switch in series with the beeper module, sort of like the
early NAV-enable switches ... with something fancier developed
as people start understanding the signals. [I.e. is it a
hardwire reverse signal, is it sent over the canbus, etc]

I brought in my car to Bredemann Toyota for my first oil change/filter/tire rotation.

I also told the service technician I wanted to change the "beep/beep/beep" to one beep. He agreed and informed me there would be no charge for the change. He also said the continuous beep was to alert others of me backing up, upon which I laughed hysterically and told him the beep was only INSIDE the Prius.

After the service, when I picked up the car...of course they forgot to change the setting for the backup beep. They had to bring a "substitute" service technician over because the "main" guy was at lunch. This guy had no idea and even told me so. He said he had never done this before.

After muddling through the myriad of menus on his portable laptop, "we" (mainly ME) found the setting and he changed it. His response..."well, I learned something today".

BTW, my other two vehicles (my wife's Lexus RX350 and my daughter's VW New Beetle) don't beep when shifted into reverse. Why does Toyota think my Prius needs some sort of warning? Am I that stupid?

 

Any suggestions on a dealer to get this done at in San Diego? I tried Mossy and they wanted to charge me 50 bucks!

 

I took mine two days ago to Mossy Toyota for the 5,000 service ($71) and it was done for free.

 

I bought mine @ El Cajon and they just did the reverse beep and three other resets for no charge while doing my first oil change.

I use to see this guy in a Toyotoa p/u who hated Mossy so much he drove around with a sign on the back of his truck "Displeased Mossy Customer". Figured they really ticked him off!

Toyota EC has a great new place that is green build and very comfy for waiting.

 

HOW TO DISABLE REVERSE BEEP AND SEAT BELT CHIME (WITHOUT DEALER)

1. With your foot on the brake pedal, press the start button to turn the car on.
2. Press the trip/odometer button until "ODO" appears on the dashboard (if it's already in that mode when you start the car, press the button three times to cycle through the "Trip" modes until you're back to "ODO" mode).
3. Press the power button to turn the car off.
4. With your foot on the brake pedal, press the start button to restart the car.
5. Press and hold the trip/odometer button within six seconds of starting the car. Continue holding the ODO button for at least 10 seconds, but do NOT release the ODO button until after the next step. (This is easiest if you use the simple method of counting, "one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand," etc., up to "ten-one-thousand".)
6. While still holding the ODO button from the step before, but after 10 seconds have elapsed, shift the car into reverse and quickly press the park button. Now release the trip/odometer button.
7. Note that the trip/odometer display will show "b on" instead of miles.
8. Press the trip/odometer button until the display shows "b off."
9. Press the Power button to turn the car off.
10. When you start the Prius back up, the reverse beep will be gone.
11. To re-enable reverse beep, repeat the procedure. "b off" will be displayed in step 7. Toggle it to "b on" in step 8.
12. Please note that this procedure will work ONLY on a North American model Prius, not on any other model.
13. To disable the seat belt beep use same steps as above, but instead of shifting into reverse, fasten the driver's seat belt and then quickly press "park".

 

You are correct this is the procedure for the 2004 -2009. The 2010 has changed but perhaps someone with a 2010 can enlighten us as to how it is done on the 2010

 

It's done be a dealer only in a 2010.

 

I bought a 2010 last week. I told them I was refusing delivery of the vehicle unless they disabled the backup beep and the seatbelt beep. Page 587 and 592 are what I quoted them. I heard the usual drivel about their lawyers etc and told them they could sell a socialist car to a stinking socialist but not to me. Within 10 mins the backup beep was changed to a single beep and the seatbelt beep was turned off.

If you are purchasing a Prius refuse delivery and they will jump to attention. Nothing like salesman's greed to trump socialist ideals!!

 

Thanks to this thread, we have the single beep reverse and seat beep off. In our town, we do the trash run to the dump and I need to leave the hatch open, which in turn beeps while moving. I can't find the hatch switch, which may be in the latch. The four doors have standard buttons, but not the rear hatch. Possibly it is magnetic, but has anyone found a way to switch off the rear hatch "ajar" beep?

 

Beep, What Beep? I fixed it myself, didn't need the dealer
