The flat beam would need to be an I beam for torsional rigidity - but really, the tube works better at that. I'm curious if the surface was dimpled if it would "help".

I'll let you know on MPG once I get through a tank or two - I doubt it'll be all that significant - probably less than when I open the moonroof ;)

Imported the Curt Hitch from The Hitch Store in the USA into Australia.
Absolutely pathetic company to deal with (what is the level of education over there  ?) & didn't package it at all!!!
Was an absolute fluke that it had no major damage in transit.

Install took over 1 hour. The hardest part is putting in the mounting bolts through the fascia trim & into the driver's side rail. I suggest an extra long extension piece to do this & you will save at least 15 minutes!!

Yesterday, after install, I was getting 65MPG using E10 fuel, while running air conditioner at around 65MPH

Can you verify this is a 2" receiver? From the pics, it doesn't look it......

Also, people mention a long extension - long is a relative thing - can someone explain the extension length?

    TIA

I've had good experiences with etrailer.com. At least for USA shopping. They have a price protection guarantee which I used. They also upgraded my shipping from normal to priority. Their web site also has a nice video on how to install the Curt hitch.

    Hi Exhauber,
I ended up with the same setup as you, the Curt hitch and the Thule T2. Your pics look great! I went to install the hitch today and couldn't figure out how to navigate the exhaust hanger on the passenger side rail. The tools Curt says are required for the job don't seem to fit on that side. Do you have any tips?

    Thanks!

For the exhaust side you need an extension plus the fortitude to push the exhaust out of the way even though it does not feel like moving. The installation video at etrailer.com says something like, "... kinda of tight here; some patience might be required...". An opinion which I agree with.

Just ordered the Curt hitch for towing a motorcycle trailer. I understand that the hitch may not line up properly and I think I can handle that. Vendor is recommending a 3 to 2 powered converter module as well as a wiring kit to hook up the electrical for connection to the trailer. Any one have experience with this?
Installation was relatively easy, but since it was my first hitch installation I took my time. Installed the muffler side first by lining up the holes then using a small stool to keep the alignment while the bolts were installed. The muffler was easy to push out of the way for installing the 2 bolts. On the drivers side, the plastic cutout had to be enlarged slightly with a pocket knife (very easy) and the bolt holes lined up perfectly. Took about an hour due to inexperience. Car height was fine for working in this area and the shipping box was used to support the hitch during installation. With two working this job, 15 min would be a good estimate. I was very pleased with my purchase from The Hitch Store and their customer service, shipping, packaging etc was excellent. The quality of the hitch is excellent as well.
An easy job for an amateur! Good luck everyone!
Any one out there have recommendations for wiring?

hey fellas, new forum member here.

I just went out and bought a new Curt 2010 Prius hitch (and a Thule Roadway 2-bike rack).. I installed the hitch, however my torque wrench was a bit confusing and I think that I accidentally tightened the bolts to closer to 100-120/lbs torque (it was recommended to be 65ft/lbs)... Does anybod know if this is going to be a problem?

Let me know... otherwise I'm setup and ready for the road.

Probably not as long as nothing distorted too much or broke. What size and grade bolt was it? Bolt diameter, not wrench size. The bolts should have had a 3 spoke or 5 spoke pattern on the head, the grade is 2 more than the number of spokes.

If they were grade Five 9/16 dia or bigger, or Grade Eight 1/2 dia or bigger, you didn't even over stress them, unless you lubed them.

They are the bolts that came with the Curt Hitch.. I believe that they said 8.8 on them.. and I DID NOT use any lube. does this sound right? also, how does the lube affect the bolts?

8.8 is the ISO (metric) equivalent of SAE Grade 5.

Lube makes it easier to turn the bolt so you end up stretching the bolt harder.

I happen to also have the Curt hitch, and I am very happy with it. On the subject of torque, I would most definitely re-torque to the correct
Specs. You are estimating your error put you at almost twice the recommended torque for those bolts! This stretches the bolt and stresses the threaded hole they torque to. This receiver is NOT a place where I think you should overlook a pre-(over) stressed mounting bolt! With a hitch mount bike rack adding to the stress, do you really want to take a chance? Re-torque the bolts before you use a rack on the hitch.

I am glad I have my hitch on my 2010. I was sitting at a light the other day and the guy from behind tapped me. He was stopped and then he tapped me. He must have been texting and his foot slipped off the brake. It saved me from having nicks on my rear bumper.

The 11469 Curt hitch is only a 1 1/4" receiver. We need a 2". Where have you found the 2" if anyone has found one for the 2010? Thanks.
