Where do I get the mod to make the socket live when the key is off?

    Thank you,

You actually do not need the Coastal Tech kit, since you easily can get all the parts at Radio Shack.

Can you explain what you mean by "jump it backwards"? Is that jumping another car with it?
    Thanks.

Can you explain the steps to turn off the smart key system? I have a 2010 Prius II.
    Thanks

Connecting the cables with the polarity reversed. Positive must go to positive, otherwise car wiring and computers can be ruined. This is true in most modern cars, not just Prius, but it can be especially expensive in a Prius. If you don't know how to tell, don't do it, and don't let some random good samaritan or tow truck guy do it. Have a Toyota dealer send someone or have it towed.

A Prius should not be used to jump a different car because the Prius 12V system will not supply the current required by a conventional car.

I understand from the different owner manuals that the Gen II's Smart Key System (SKS) differs a little from the Gen III/2010's SKS.

    A. On the Gen II Prius, there is a button under the dash near the steering column that one presses to turn off the SKS manually. Also, if there is no response from the Smart Key for 14 days, the SKS will turn off automatically.

    B. On the Gen III/2010 Prius, I understand that there are two types of SKS -- one with entry function and one without entry function. And unlike the Gen II, there is NO button that allows you to turn off the SKS manually. However:

    (i) for SKS with entry function, if the entry function is not used for 5 days, the SKS will turn off automatically.

(ii) for SKS without entry function, I don't think the SKS will turn off automatically.

Although there is no "easy button" in the Gen III/2010 to turn off the SKS manually, I've read that there is a rather long and difficult way to do it -- see post #7 of the following thread: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...-will-park-lax-13-days-dead-battery-sure.html

EDIT: I don't know why the Gen III/2010 Owner's Manual distinguishes between SKS with and SKS without entry function.

As far as I can tell, all Gen III/2010s have SKS with entry function (at least in the driver door) -- even the lowest available model line, the Prius II, has it.

Maybe Toyota is planning on coming out with a "Prius I" that has SKS without entry function?

A prius takes very little power to jump. I've used other cars, aligator clip jump packs, 12v socket jump... Even "dead" 18v batteries. (around 13v... ). Even a tiny solar panel to bring the volts high enough to start. Point being... It takes very little amps to start.

The smallest jump box you can find will start a prius...

Btw the 12v sockets in a gen II is always connected. You cant pull voltage but you can supply a jump with that method at any time... ( radio turns on right away... Don't leave the jump box connected since it forces the radio and such to stay on... And with the car off, you'll drain the jump pack... Possibly taking hours...)

Power outlet mods never required... You guys buy anything before testing your own ideas... A little enginuity goes a long way ( ashamed )
