Anyone using HTC Hero with Bluetooth?

Just wondering if anyone is using the HTC Hero Android phone (Sprint) with their 2010 w/NAV?

I need to upgrade my phone and the HTC Hero looks like a better choice than the iPhone with its poor AT&T coverage and support, and better than the Palm Pre.

If you have the Hero, any bluetooth pairing, phone contacts, bluetooth audio, etc. issues?

The contacts thing is not so big a deal for me - I don't have hundreds of contacts on my phone, so it's not a big deal to do a one-time manual entry.

My existing Samsung has the same problem, but I was still able to transfer them one at a time.

I did end up getting the HTC Hero. It works great, except for the contacts transfer, as you indicated. Maybe they'll fix that in the next firmware. Android 2.0 is due out very soon, and the Hero is supposed to get it.

 

What vcf and transfer apps are you using?

I have tried this, but I can't get it to work.

 

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, Bluetooth File Transfer will not work on the (Sprint) HTC Hero. Tried every way I could think of - that app just won't run on that phone.

 

Thanks - that link got me started. I was finally able to do it - but it's not real simple.

Here's the method I used (I see no reason this wouldn't work with other phones as well):

1. Pair the phone with the NAV, as normal.

2. Pair the Laptop with the NAV as another "Hands-Free Unit" (by by adding it as another "phone", in the NAV's settings). I used the normal Windows "My Bluetooth Places" to do this.

3. Once you have paired the laptop, you need to change its Bluetooth configuration in Windows to enable the "OBEX Object Push" service. Once you do this, you will see two entries for "Car Multimedia" in the "My Bluetooth Places" screen: One for "Hands-Free Unit", and one for "OBEX Object Push".

4. Create a .vcf file containing all of your contacts. You can do this a number of ways. I did this on the phone, using an Android app called VCardIO from the Android Market - but you can create one from Outlook or other apps as well. You then need to have this vcf file on your laptop (I transferred mine from the phone's SD card, through USB.)

5. Re-connect your phone (NOT the laptop) to the NAV unit. You need to do this, because the NAV unit's contact lists are phone-specific. Even though you'll be using the laptop for the transfer, you have to start out with the phone connected.

6. Select the "Contacts" button on the NAV - it will ask you if you want to transfer contacts. Select yes. At this point your phone will disconnect. That's OK - don't worry. It needs to disconnect the phone to switch to the "OBEX Push" function to accept the contacts.

7. On your laptop, right click the little bluetooth icon on the bottom right of the task bar. Select "Quick Connect" > "Send Business Card".

8. In the window that comes up, select "Show All Devices" from the drop-down menu. "Car Multimedia" should be displayed. Select it and click "Next".

9. Your laptop will pair with the phone - you may need to select the "OBEX Object Push" service.

You will now select the .vcf file you created and want to send, using the "browse" button. Select the file, and then start the transfer.


Hope this helps people with the Hero and other Android phones. Lots of them coming out now.

Update: The Android 2.1 update for the Sprint Hero solves this issue - Contacts can now be transferred as a group without the laptop process.

 

Thanks for your posts, but they really belong in the Gen II forums. The 2.1 update for the Sprint Hero now properly can transfer all contacts, for the Gen III.

 

Glad you had success - but again, you may want to post this in the Gen II forum, not the Gen III (2010) forum.....

 

If you're referring to the "laptop" method, that shouldn't be necessary with Android 2.1 on the Sprint Hero - at least it wasn't on mine. When I paired my updated phone, I was able to transfer all contacts immediately from the phone. I wonder if it has something to do with the type ("Group") of contacts you have (Google vs Exchange vs "Phone", etc.). You might try changing a few to a different Group (by editing the contacts on your Hero) and try again. If you've just upgraded to 2.1, you also may want to delete and re-pair your phone. It may "remember" that your old Android OS (1.5) did not have file transfer capability.

And you do know that transferring contacts is a separate process after pairing, correct? It doesn't do it automatically when you pair a phone. See the NAV manual for the specific procedure.
