2010 Prius Navigation System is really horrible

So I played with ours last night and was easily able to find the Cheesecake Factories in the area. So A+ there.

 

Not only does it tell you where the cheesecake factory is, if you hit the INFO button you will get the exact address and telephone number and if your bluetooth is setup, you can even dial them and find out how long the wait is! I rather have that information in the unit than to carry a Yellow Pages!

Try the route overview feature....very cool.

 

ya, 411 info is very cool. its too bad we cannot edit current entries since most POI's do not have the extra info.

not a major biggie since i jus add the ones i use a lot to my phone (actually did that years ago) but would be nice to have another way to dial them

 

I'm looking forward to the day when GPS data is tied to the Internet, so that updates are automatic and transparent.

ya me too. that is why i like verizon VZ navigator. not tied to internet (although updates come that way) they still use 3rd party mapping updates which still come down slower than molasses in your neck of the woods in December

they do allow to save and edit favorites, voice recogition for addy inputs, traffic alerts, etc... all for 9.99 a month (with my bundled plan, its either free, or a prorated charge of about $3 a month, how ever you want to look at it)

but after comparing SEVERAL different routes including the 4 year old housing development accross the street from me, verizon's maps are much more up to date.

now for all you DIY'ers out there looking for mods to make, figure out a way to attach flash memory thru the USB port that the NAV can access for personal POI info and integrate it to the screen...

ya, monumental task, but what the hey?? i would buy it in a heartbeat

 

I just got my prius the other day and finally started playing with the nav system.

Few things I noticed, the GPS part is pretty accurate and reliable, it lists the right locations and streets. The problem seems to stem from street addresses. When I use them it seems horribly unreliable, my house comes up at an intersection yet when I set it via GPS it gives a way wrong address.

Also still need to mess with it but with playing with go home option it had me driving WAY out of my way, wether this was due to traffic avoidance Im not sure but their wasnt any traffic.

But for 1k for the backup camera by itself, I am glad I got the nav option, it makes it alot easier to use my ipod and see radio stations and the bluetooth feature is easier to read.

I dont like a DVD based system but since reading the prices of the DVDs I can see why they did it to milk out money like crazy on them..

 

Can somebody please HELP !!!!
We bought our Prius III Thursday and this weekend we drove from Chicago to Detroit. Left early morning so i tried to enter the destination while my wife was driving on the highway. WRONG !!!
From the Navi manual: “Some functions may become inoperable when driving. Unavailable touch screen buttons are dimmed. Only when the vehicle is not moving, can the destination and route selection be done.†Are you KIDDING ME ? I have to stop on the side of the highway to have the PASSENGER enter a destination, re-route my trip or lookup POI for gas, restaurants or hotels ? How come I don't see this problem ANYWHERE on these forums? Thats absolutely RIDICULOUS !!! Luckily I took my trusty old Garmin with us and that save the day, but after spending couple grand on the NAVI system that does not work while moving, that is a horrible workaround ! Buyers remorse already !

There are many threads - they really should be sticky'd http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...-prestigious-society-navi-hack-installed.html - yes you are stuck - there are two mods that have been identified - the one above, then one that you need to b uild with parts from Radio Shack. There may be a backdoor - but it has not yet been discovered.

 

I believe that is already available with some iPhone applications using the new 3.0 software....

Seriously, Nav lockout is one of the two most talked about issues on PriusChat. If you didn't find anything about it, go back and look again. Search works well.

This is an issue with most Nav systems. The problem comes from the way street addresses are assigned. There is no correlation between street addresses and physical addresses. Generally Nav databases know the street addresses for road intersections and major points of interest. Other street addresses are interpolated by taking the end point addresses and dividing them equally over the street. Sometimes this works well, and other times it misses completely.

agreed. POI's are accessible by steering voice commands. have used them while driving many many times.

 

I was really debating whether or not to get the navigation because I am pretty good at geography myself (I got to "state" level geography bee in 8th grade haha) but I got it because I wanted the solar roof package on my Prius III. On my latest road trip I drove from Los Angeles to Sedona, AZ and used the voice commands to find my route. It was incredibly easy and took less than a minute. I was hesitant about trying it out because I prefer to just use the touch-screen, but I was still very impressed by how accurate and smooth the whole voice commands process was. Yes, the system did overestimate the amount of time it would take to reach Sedona, but the remaining mileage was correct. By the time we got into town, it was very dark (and Sedona has very, very few streetlights). The navigation saved our butts looking for our hotel, so altogether, I am one happy customer.

The reason your system didn't estimate the time right is because your detailed NAV settings are probably wrong. They need to be set at 25 residental, 45 main streets, and probably 65 or 70 freeway BUT when you have a long trip planned and know you'll probably do 75 or more, re-set the freeway speed setting to be more accurate.

No LIVE traffic on my gen II ... or anyone else's from factory but live traffic and detailed settings for average speed on road types are not connected.....

 

The 25/45 settings don't seem to work well for me. The problem is the nav thinks a lot of 2 lane highways are main streets. If I'm in Nevada for example where the speed limit is 70 on most 2 lane highways it's way off and I need to reset it. But when I return to Oregon where the speed limit is 55 (out of town) I need to stop and reset the main street speed again. My portable Garmin knows and even displays the speed limit. It may get one wrong ocassionally if the limit has changed but it's correct almost all the time.

This is another very useful feature that Toyota should include in their nav system. I like the bigger screen and the way the freeway information is displayed by the Toyota system.

 

Yeah I was thinking about correcting the average drive speed for different street types, but honestly, when I do long distance trips I just mentally divide the total mileage by 60 to get the approximate hours and minutes it'll take. I know I drive faster (usually 75 to 85 depending on speed limits) but I figure I might stop, eat, etc. Thanks for the advice, though!
