Although I have personally not used it, I wouldn't have any doubts whatsoever using Amsoil SSO

If you utilize anywhere near the time it says you can go between changes, it more than pays for itself!

Is that price considering that you brought your own 0W-20 oil?

I'm approaching the 5K mark and called dealers for pricing.

    My Indianapolis dealer: $70

    Madison dealer: $90

    So, that's really expensive...

If you never like to get your hands dirty and money is easy, having it done is a good deal.

But I like the satisfaction of doing it myself and knowing exactly what was done... Is that a guy thing?

I don't know if this was mentioned in the 34 pages of previous threads but if the interval is changed do you think it would require a better oil filter than the standard one from Toyota to go 10,000 miles? Are there any recommendations for extended use oil filters for the gen III?

I would change the filter more often and top off the oil.

thats a good question because if you get the expensive ones that are supposed to have "tinier" holes, then wouldn't it plug up just that much faster?

Seems a good filter would basically be one that has more surface area for the oil to filter through. When it comes to spin on filters, I've noticed some of the very expensive ones are not as heavy and if you visualize the layers of filter material, they often have less than some of the budget ones. "how much is marketing and hype?"

But now we are dealing with a cannister filter.
If you get one with tiny holes, it does better for a short period but soon would get plugged.

Thats why I"m getting a magnetic plug also... microscopic metal particles have to be the biggest enemy. Otherwise as long as the viscosity is good and the additives don't wear out that keep sludge down etc we should be good.

And the latter is exactly what a long term synthetic is supposed to be able to do.

Toyota uses the same filter in Europe where I am told the interval is 10K miles. I doubt if there would be any filter problems after 10K miles.

right, after 10K miles, you would think the oil would be pretty filtered! :D

I haven't done an oil change yet but if you just changed the filter would you lose a lot oil in the process or is the filter high up on the engine so you would just replace what was in the filter:confused:

No the filter on the Prius is down on the bottom by the oil pan, I don't know how much oil you would lose, probably not more than 1/2 a quart. But changing the filter without changing the oil, or changing the oil without changing the filter is just wasted effort. You should always do both.

On most cars the filter is above the oil level. But as the prius is not most cars, I dont know. Yet.

OOPS! Too slow on the submit button. See post above.

I haven't done that either.. I assume you would have to drain the oil and return it back..... won't be doing that!... LOL!

If I have to go to all the trouble, its getting new oil!

We lost track of the original intent of this thread. I am officially using the 7,500 thru 10,000 miles oil change interval on my 2010 Prius.

    END

Is there anything wrong with using Toyota's 0W20 oil? I see lots of different brands but not Toyota's on this thread (I haven't checked all 300+ posts). Since my dealer gives free oil changes I naturally want to use his services.

    Thanks,

    Rich N.

Nothing that I can see. Some question whether or not they will get the 0W20 when they take it to the dealer. But thats a dealer problem, not an oil problem.

Has anyone done a comparative oil analysis with the Toyota and other brands. Hard to do using the same vehicle, considering all the variables. So lab tests would be the only reliable comparison.

Just make certain that they in fact are using the 0W-20 and not their bulk 5W-20 (get it in writing).

As Hotbrass and Spiderman said no one knows of anything wrong with Toyota's oil, just make sure you get the right stuff. Most of us have been using Mobil 1 because it is very good oil and it's available at auto parts stores and Wal Mart at a good price, $6.27 per quart.

They did use Toyota 0w / 20w on my oil change and gave me the 1/2 qt left over.
Strange if you look at the qt bottle it says made in USA.
Service guy says it is made by Mobil but who knows if he's correct.
