How many leaf cars can you produce?

    Ok for those that don't know, the maximum no. of leaf cars that the old Gen 2 can display is 4 cars. The most I ever got was 3½ leaf cars. (this is for the 5 min cons.)


    So you can imagine my surprise when I saw this (and I apologise for the poor quality)

    7 cars! That's 350Wh of elec. regenerated by braking. I'm wondering how much of an improvement Toyota has made on recovering the energy because I noticed it's much easier to top up the battery via braking which means less fuel is needed to burn to run the engine to recharge the battery during city driving. Mind you, these 7 cars were taken after descending one side of the Rocky Mountains. You can tell I just climbed the mountain because the average is reading 5.1L/100km (47mpg US)

    With the Gen II, is the limit an actual system limit, or simply a display limit?

    Not sure. Never took the Gen 2 across the Rockies. In the steep mtn back home, I'd take it from 2 bars to 8 bars and I've never seen 4 leaf cars.

    Well it's that or let the car roll down the side of the mountain range and max out the speed :D

    i got 5 cars on a trip thru the pass on the way to Leavenworth. it was like an 8% grade which i basically "coasted" down the hill for about 10 miles. dont think i touched the brakes more than once to slow down to go around a truck trailer sitting not so far off the side of the road.

    the part that sucked was that the cars stopped in about 4 minutes because that is how long it took to top off the battery. bummer

    Nice!!! How did the 5 min. bar go?? That should look pretty impressive too! (Note that the 1 min. leaf cars are 30Wh and the 5 min. leaf cars are 50Wh)

    So, does "getting a car" mean one has regenerated 30 (or 50) Wh in that 1 (or 5) minute(s)?

    How does one switch between the 1 and 5 minute display?

    The usable part of the Gen3 Prius' battery (the 40% from 40% full to 80% full) is about 500 Wh, I believe.

    I think it's the DISP button on the touch tracer, just hold it down while on the screen showing the 1 or 5 min intervals and it'll switch between the 2 modes.

    I do not have pics of 5 min. time span. I recall that the battery was so "full", that the 8th graph-bar (on the little battery pictogram) took a certain time to go off.
    I'm shure that i was producing a huge amount of electricity that i could'nt store that day, due to battery limitations. Have i had two batterys that day i would have fill then up !

    Yes but understant that it is one and every single "leaf-car" pictogram that worth 30W/h for the 1 min. span and 50W/h for the 5 min. span.
    To swich from 1 to 5 min. span just push "disp" (steering right branch) button holding it for 3 seconds, it'll then switch from 1 to 5 and back.

    Correct. That's only via regenerative braking only. It doesn't count any energy coming from the engine to recharge the battery. In the city, you want to minimise the no. of leaf cars (cause that means you're braking too often and not maintaining momentum). I was in the mountains, that's why I managed to recover that much.

    wow.. that's a lotta mountain driving.

    After reading several forum posts I am still unclear on what the 'leaf car' actually means. Yes it clear that it means 50wh or 30wh (depending on the display). And that number can be related to the electricity I use at home. If I am correct then at a cost of $0.10 per kilowatt hour from the electric company it means each leaf car is "worth" a half of a penny or less. Or another way of looking at it is that each leaf car is like leaving one or two CF-lights on for an hour. So I can relate the leaf cars to home use. But how do they relate to car use? I.e., how many gallons of gasoline savings does each leaf car represent. I am sure that there are lots of variables but is there a rough SWAG? I think that each represents 1/100th of a gallon of gas but would like to hear from someone who actually knows. TIA!

    A typical plug-in Prius runs 250Wh/mile, so the single 50Wh leaf car means you can drive Prius in EV mode for 0.2 mile.

    0.2 miles per leaf car. 40-50 mpg. Means a leaf car is about 1/225th of a gallon. That is about 1/2 of my guess but given the inefficiencies of converting from gasoline to electric and back again the 1/225th number seems correct. Thanks for the information.

    The other option would be to stay off the brake, push a tiny bit on the accelerater & hyper stealth down the steep grade in order to prohibit the ICE from spinning off extra regen that'd be created by riding the brake. You'd be doing over 100mph in no time ... er, I mean so I've heard ...

    I somehow managed to get 6 leafs in 5 min. mode driving around L.A.! And when I noticed it I was on Mulholland Dr. and had just come UP the hill! And no, I don't ride my brakes when I drive. I had come up a nice windy road and was seeing how Red handles, so perhaps the braking into curves did it?

    Btw... definitely not a sports car. ;) I found the acceleration really lacking in responsiveness.

    Wondering if when you see something show up, is that the last 5 min? Or is the last column in progress and so you see it changing while you drive?

    When you see the far right column that is the last 5 minutes (or last 1 minute if you press and hold down the display button to toggle the mode).

    The "current" mpg is shown near the speedometer. In the Gen 1 and Gen 2 the current mpg value is shown on the far right on the display, but there is a deliniation as you move to the left where the "history" is shown.

    PWR Mode ;). I found that made the accelerator more responsive and you get more power now rather than letting the car "spool" up. When I was "carving" the back country roads, PWR mode made it felt like the accelerator was an on/off switch. It was also the time I wished I had the quicker steering of the Touring Package.
