For any of you who ever drove and fell in love with a Honda CRX, these new photos of the Honda CR-Z will make you drool. According to Honda this is the near-production "concept" version of the CR-Z hybrid, due to hit the streets in 2010. Just like the CRX of old, the CR-Z looks fast and nimble. Underneath the front end will be a 1.5 liter four-cylinder engine running Honda's IMA hybrid system. As a bonus for hybrid drivers who enjoy a little fun with their MPGs, Honda is throwing in a 6-speed manual transmission. Overall the CR-Z looks like a fun, economical hybrid that will keep the functionality of a hatch-back while infusing some excitement into the hybrid segment. Hot? Looks like a vacuum cleaner to me. ;)

I'll let others decide if that means it sucks. :)

Yup, there's no accounting for taste or the lack of it.

With a manual trans. it should eclipse the Prius in mileage in the right hands, unless it's -a lot- heavier than the original Insight. Unless the original Insight got its' increadable mileage from the tiny engine it used.

I'd only seen a front view of the the CRZ concept and never made the connection with the old Honda CRX, but it does bear a strong resemblance. I loved my old CRX, I'd think there would still be a decent market for such a car.

I think it's great that more hybrids are coming. This one's a little too youth-oriented for me, but I still think it's great. I look forward to seeing Toyota's competing product.

I like the looks of everything except the front grill. Its just too big!

What will make it a no sale for me is IMA unless they enhance it. 15hp or less of electric is just not enough.... I want a car that can at least go 25mph on electric only mode.

*if it's around 15-22k, and gets 40+ mpgs!

It better get better mpg considering the current IMA already doing it already with their bigger cars with CVT.

With the manual, I expect 65+ mpg. If it does, it will be a great dd.

manual tranny ... so it looks like they're sticking by their guns ... no ability to run pure EV like the Prius

    My guestimate:
$19,000 and 52mpg unless they upgrade IMA to something more then 15hp.

Appears to be some misconceptions about manual transmission vs. CVT (actually planetary gear system, in the Prius). The CVT allows the Prius to run the engine at its most efficient level as far as HP vs. gasoline intake goes. So it's always adjusting the effective gear ratio. There's no way you can beat that with a manual transmission.

A manual is better than an automatic tranny however. And a manual is just more fun, the only thing I really miss not having in my Prius.

Not true with the IMA system. Remember the manual vs CVT mpg rating in the Insight? It was about 20 mpg difference for highway use.

Finally! A hybrid that looks like a sports car and will [hopefully] appeal to the general public in the style department. Awesome. :)
I hope Toyota responds with a Celica hybrid and Scion tc hybrid. :)

I am a bit bored with the current fascination with big wheels, but otherwise the car looks great. An EV version would really get my attention.

The difference was not nearly that large but you are correct, between a CVT and a traditional manual, the manual did the best. That could happen again if IMA remains largely unchanged though CVT's have improved since the original Insight.

Bears resemblance to the old CRX with a supposedly F1-inspired front design. If it'll get the kids into a hybrid, then so be it.

And a loud muffler and neon lights underneath? :D

(has anyone heard a Prius with a loud muffler?)

Don't forget the Type R stickers. Those are worth 5hp each!

Yes, I like the idea. Maybe this is something I can trade my 09 FiT Sports when it becomes available. ;)

This generalization is no longer true. Automatics are better than manuals more often than not these days, and dual-clutch autos are even better. Typically the only reason an auto doesn't beat a stick these days is because it has fewer gears - given the same number of gears I'd pit the fuel economy of an automatic over a manual any day.

I don't care if the Manual has slightly less MPG. If it's cheaper, I'll get it since I miss driving a small manual car. Hope Honda brings back the Civic Hatchback and add IMA to it.
