Tank MPG

getting cold around here. just got home from work, 59º. mileage for my 7 mile commute 59.2 on the Car which means probably 56 mpg in real terms. a major drop from last weeks 62-65 mpg when temps were near 80

 

true. could be an anomaly. weird because its first day with grill blocking and morning trip was slightly above average, engine temps hit nearly 190 (which normally does not happen, prev top temps were in the 170's)

so, weather is expected to hold or get only slightly colder. we see how the week averages out

 

Dave which grills are you blocking and how much of those grills are you blocking?

And yes a temp difference of 30F keeping the engine cooler and keeping it from warming up faster on a 7 mile commute can account for all the MPG hit.

all the grills 100%.... the emblem forces me to use pieces about a foot in length. 4 altogether. the reason i am blocking 100% is

1) short trip
2) max temps in the morning were only getting to 170 on a good day. in the afternoon with temps near 80 (last week, this week temps expected to only reach low 60's) temps were hitting 185-190

3) i always block 100 % or nothing. in 5 years, i can count only a handful of times i had to stop and pull a few out...maybe 2-3 times or so and that was always in May during a warmer than normal day while on the freeway. in town, its never an issue. and i pull it when it looks like temps will hit 210...which i feel still provides a large safety margin

 

i have a scangauge that measures water temp. for blocking, on the lower grill i take 1" pipe foam insulation, split it in half, stuff it in. not pretty but works, and i am guessing this only provides something like 90+% blockage.

for the top, i use ½" pipe foam split in half.

pretty spendy mod really...especially now that i am doing two cars. cost me $2.48 at Lowes

 

Dave, though I have a 16 mile one-way commute, I have seen very similar temps at the 7 mile point. Typically I will reach 190-193F by the time I park. But today, with a starting temp of 50F, I didn't even reach 185F. Time to block up.

I believe the OBDII port location is standard, I have several vehicles and it's in the same location on all of them. Both American and Japanese

 

I did 51mpg on our first tank and not really even trying, calculated pump mileage not computer.

 

I'm sitting at 65.5 MPG and I'm 182 miles into the tank. I'm determined to have an 800 mile tank!

You'll make it, remember you have 2 gl. left when the pip starts flashing or about 120 miles, so if you at 700 when it starts, your in. Has your fuel gauge come off of full yet?

Has anyone with the standard 17" wheels been able to achieve 60mpg+ tank averages consistently?

Do the 17" wheels result in higher rolling resistance and air drag ?

 

dont know about air drag, but they are wider tires, so ya, rolling resistance is higher and the average driver will not hit 60 mpg in either the 15 or the 17 inch. hypermilers will hit 70+

 

@a priori I noticed in your signature you get in the high 50mpg range. at what speed are you driving for highway?

I'm curious as to what I'm going to get as most of my driving will be highway. 80/20
I drive around 70 on the highway so I hope to at least get in the high 40's.
