Hi all. I have a 2003 Prius, no CD player or navigation system, and I've been listening to my iPod through a Belkin charger/audio-out and a cassette adapter. However, my tape deck just died, and I don't like FM transmitters, and I'd prefer not to bother with installing a new CD player. So it looks like I want a FMM-100 from installer dot com (which I can't post a link to here; it says it's an "FM stereo modulator" that "goes in the antenna line behind the radio"), and then some cables to connect my Belkin audio-out adapter or the iPod itself to its RCA inputs. But has anyone done this? That website isn't as clear as I'd like and I'm not sure if I'm reading it right, or if it's something I should have someone else install for me. Any thoughts? Thanks.
You can go ahead and do it, it will work fine, except be warned that your regular FM reception will drop by as much as 50%. I bought an alpine kit that is similar for my Chrysler Neon navigation, and it was great, except I could barely catch even local stations. I later bought the iPod integration kit for my Neon made by Chrysler (if I had only known!) and it works amazing, controls via the navigation screen and is so clear. DICE makes a similar kit for our generation too. You can even control it via the display and buttons on the dash. It will be similar in cost to the FM transmitter you are getting too. Plus you still get great reception and still use your CD player as well.
Thanks! But I can't find the DICE integrated kit for a 2003, they only seem to list 2004+. Or do you mean the FM-RDS one? (Weirdly, I'm not sure I want full integration--I have my iPod mounted to the left of my steering wheel, closer and higher than the Prius's own audio controls, and find it easier to deal with than changing the radio stations. But on the other hand, losing that much regular FM reception might be a problem.)
Okay, I am insane for making an account JUST to resurrect this tiny, 3 year old thread. I've been lurking and learning a lot. Hi! katenpveu, I'm looking into the same thing for my '03, and have learned a LOT. I'd love to share with you! The DICE integrator allows you to use the iPod to control itself. It also, simultaneously, lets you use the stock stereo/touchscreen. It works for the '01-'03 Gen 1 Prii. Basically, it lets the car see the iPod as a multi-disc changer, as I understand it. Touchscreen controls would be something like, press 'Disc 6' to use the iPod, press 'Disc 1' to use preset playlist one. That kinda thing. The reason it's technically unsupported is because it doesn't actually see it as an iPod, and because in some cases, a wire needs to be cut (on the DICE unit's harness) to make it usable. Alternatively, you can just get a different harness from Toyota (but it's probably 10-30 bucks). Here's a REALLY good thread about this topic here on PC: DICE iPod integration in G1 - results! | PriusChat Read the WHOLE thing, because there are some issues that are present but eventually resolved completely. Good luck, if you're still alive!
