I now have over 3,000 miles on the car. I took a trip of about 80 miles using cruise at 60 mph and 57mph a little slow for the speed of traffic but managed 66.3 mpg. Then after combined driving for about 400 mile still using cruise when possible averaged 60.4. I don't know why so many people are having a problem including consumer reports. It does take being aware of pulse and glide, and training yourself to accomplished good mileage. But possible indeed.

My mpg has been steadily increasing as I learn to maximize my Prius...but it has taken some time to learn. I averaged 51.4 on my last tank which is a 2mpg increase over the previous tank. This was mostlly freeway driving at 65-70mpg and quite a few steep hills.

It is very easy for a number of us to have the same question as Mitchellsprius: Why people are having such a hard time beating 50MPGs? Most of us asking the question live in the flatlands, have the "right" length for a commute, or live in a non-harsh climate.

We do have to recognize that people who regularly drive in hilly terrain or in cold or very hot weather are going to see lower MPGs. It may not be for lack of effort that people struggle to make it out of the 40s.

Mitchell -- Don't get me wrong! I'm very glad to hear you are having such success with high mileage. Keep it up and have fun!

And, thanks to antiflash for reminding us that not everyone lives in the land of the "perfect" Prius drive. (Just wait until January, and I'll be moaning about barely getting 40MPG!)

Do you plan on installing a block heater? Should help a little for shorter trips in the cold. Up there where you live you might even get Wayne to help you install it.

    Absolutely!!

Wayne was the proud installer of an EBH on my 2007, and I know he is quite excited to do the same on my 2010.

I am hoping to participate in either the Chicago or Milwaukee events, but I'm going to have to find a way to free up my schedule in order to get it done!!

I've considered waiting another year so that I could do better side-by-side comparisons to my 2007 (my first winter was EBH-free), but I'd much rather just get better MPGs. :D

Well for the people living inadverse conditions your gas mileage will be lower. I live on a hill and notice my mileage drops. When I drive by myself my mileage is better probally due to weight. Thanks for the reply allways fun.

    Let's see . . . You live on a hill . . . You live on a hill in Monterey . . . You live on a hill in Monterey, California.

For a moment there, I was almost ready to feel sorry for you! :D

How ever much you lose in fuel economy, you'll get it all back through the view out the window!
