In Australia, there are 2 shortcomings with the GPS unit:

    1) No speed camera & red light camera locations. Toyota refuses to on the basis that they could be sued if you got a speeding ticket for a camera not listed (which is garbage, because I have checked & all other car manufacturers have it)
    2) Doesn't have spoken street names. Pretty much all GPS units have spoken street names now - Toyota stuck in the stone age.

Can you source & upload your own software to have these features? Can you go to the GPS unit manufacturer directly & get software from them to override?

Not that I am aware of...

These built in GPS systems are not like Garmin, TomTom etc type units. Basically other than version updates which usually update map info etc, you cannot do much else to mod the stock gps...

I have had a TOM TOM and the Police Camera's or intersection cameras didn't come up on the unit I once had. So I don't know if that's allowable, even by law. You would have to check your jurisdiction and laws regarding such.

As for spoken street names, my unit does that all the time, so I am not sure why your unit would not. You didn't indicate which vehicle you had so I am not sure, but in my Prius it speaks the street names all the time.

Laws in Australia allow for GPS units to have speed & red light camera locations pre-installed. 99% of units on the market have it..................except Toyota

As for spoken street names - we have the Heads Up display in Australia, so maybe it was too complicated or too expensive to make compatible

Wow, in Australia, stock GPS systems from other manufacturers like Ford, Nissan etc have speed and red light camera location built into them? I did not know that, I thought only aftermarket units which suction cupped to the window had that tech built in...
