There are a couple pitfalls about getting this repaired that I have, unfortunately, discovered. First is that there are a couple parts related to the hybrid engine that only the dealer can fix (according to a body shop I spoke with). Secondly, with the 2010 it's hard to find parts right now, so it takes forever. They had to order a ton of parts from Japan.

My car went into the shop on August 13th, and the latest estimate for getting it back is early October. Granted, the car was about a scratch away from being totaled, so it's extensive repairs, but still, getting parts takes forever right now. Should be quicker once there are more of the cars on the road (and in the salvage yards).

    Update!

I dropped off the car today, and the owner of the shop said all of the parts had arrived. Though he said there may be other parts to order once the car had been disassembled, he later told me he found no other internal damage.

It appears I'll have my car back early next week!

I'm getting the taste of staying without my Prius too later today and it sucks... I'm taking it to the body shop recommended by Geico ... Geico made all the arrangements, including having the car rental waiting for me in the shop; working together with the shop to get the car fixed as soon as possible, providing lifetime guarantee for the service, and ensuring that they only partner with the high quality shops. All I have to do is pay the deducible upon returning the car rental and picking up my Prius, hopefully in few days...

I'm finding it hard to believe but if Geico keep up with their promise, I'll be very impressed... I may not consider change car insurances after all…

It is tough leaving the Prius behind, but I know it helps when the insurance companies do their jobs the right way.

I hope your wait is short!

Everything was ready for me in the body shop: car rental, the Geico representative, the shop manager, a poster with the green lizard thing holding up a welcome sign, and hot coffee! (No English muffins though! :D). Very nice! So, while the Geico guy took care of the car, I signed the papers for the rental. As I was getting ready to leave 10 minutes after I arrived (no kidding) with the rented Ford Taurus, the Geico guy stopped me to let me know that it was going to take 2-3 weeks to get the part from Japan (actually the whole door coming from Toyota!). So, I ended up leaving the shop with my Prius and the car rental was cancelled, which I liked because I can still drive my Prius in the meantime and it will take only 2-3 days in the shop once the part arrives. Sweet! :)

For those of you who love endless daytime soap operas and other serial tragic comedies:

I called this past Friday to check on status of the car. Done! But not really done. All painted, clear coated & buffed! But . . .

It turns out the right side parking lot got knocked out by the hit on the left front of the bumper. No one ever suspected a problem, but it was broken. The part was ordered late Thursday.

I found out this morning the parking light was going to be delivered to the shop today. This means my car will be ready for pickup tomorrowl

    Next Installment: New Horns!

    New Horns!

This past week I surfed the net and perused a selection of aftermarket horns. My recent episode of blowing the horn and being ignored got be a bit miffed.

I then went to a local auto parts store and bought several horns. I took them to the body shop and reviewed the selections with the guy doing the work. He dismissed the air horns, telling me I wouldn't be very happy if the compressor failed or the horns filled with water or snow.

We tested the other horns, and upon his recommendation I agreed to keep the Fiamm HIGHWAY BLASTER Low Tone and High Tone horns. Despite the rather ferocious name, the sound did not send everyone running from the building. The tone is fuller and broader than the tinny things that come with the Prius. Fact is, the sound kind of reminds me of an old Buick Riviera.

Anyway, my very helpful body shop owner said we would install the horns. The bracket has to change, but he believe he could use all of the existing electrical setup without making a change. I'm going to keep the old "horns" and reinstall them if a problem arises.

I expect I'll get a few odd looks when I blow the horn, but I'll be very pleased to be noticed!!!

NEXT EPISODE: Back to the Dealer to have the Driver's Side Window Rattle fixed.

    Thanks!

What you don't see in these pictures are the other marks to the bumper from an earlier hit-and-run in a shopping center parking lot. I didn't get it fixed at the time, and I was pleased that full bumper replacement meant those other marks were now taken car of!

I definitely know how you feel, I've taken it in the rear twice with my prius. :)
