Well today my Prius got its first boo boo. On the way to work a woman in a Volvo was turning right from a side street and turned right into me as I was passing through the intersection. She had a stop sign I did not. She pulled out like I was not even there. I swerved to avoid her, but with oncoming traffic I could only move over so far. I thought I was home free but at the last second I heard a thump.

The damage does not seem too bad. Really just some scratches and a quarter sized spot of lost of paint on the side of the rear bumper. No dents, no ripped plastic. I am going to get an estimate later today. She wanted to give me money on the spot to pay for it, but I said I wanted to get an estimate first.

I have already had two other incidents with this car where people pulled out in front of me like I was invisible. One guy ran me off the road when he tried to move into my lane and just came over like I was not there. Its like the Metallic Blue color blends into the environment and they dont see you.

Sorry to read about your accident. I had a lady in a silver TL pull right out in front of me Sunday like I wasn't there. Luckily I was able to see it developing ahead of me and slowed considerably to avoid her.

Sorry to hear about your accident. :(

I've also noticed the invisible Prius syndrome in action .

I don't know if people assume Prius will be travelling at snail's pace, so they have plenty of time to ample out in front of you or they really are blind to the car.

After driving an SUV (OK, a small SUV :p) in which nobody pulled out in front of me, this is a little worrying .

In the mean time, I've just got to reset my own sense's, to be hyper alert for these selective sight drivers.

What's why I miss not having Day Time Running Lights - although I know it still happens when you have them.

At least she is going to pay...that's a good thing.

Unfortuneately, I think more and more people are becoming more self absorbed, especially when they are driving. I have had a few close encounters. So, it could be the car, but I think people really need to start paying attention more.

I was on a four lane highway, the other day. Came around a curve and saw the light change to red. There was a SUV a little bit behind me in the next lane over. They didnt even try to stop, just flew right on through. They were very lucky there was no traffic crossing at that point. But still, I was just in disbelief at the other driver.

I am amazed how bad people are driving these days. I think a lot of it has to do with people fumbling around with their electronic gadgets and stuff. I also think texting and phone conversations add to the mayhem. In NY we have a hands free law but no one abides by it and the cops rarely enforce it.

Just got the estimate $800. Turns out they have to remove the entire bumper to blend/clear coat it. Plus they have to replace my Prius bumper protector, and I have the new clear one that says PRIUS. Also I did not notice I lost my wheel cover and the wheel got scratched. So they have to repair that too. They will also check to make sure there is no suspension damage from the wheel getting hit. So it could go higher.

So its going to go through her insurance now, and they are going to get me a rental car.

Refusing to accept money on the spot and getting the other drivers contact and insurance info is a very good practice for the owners of any newer car with plastic/composite rubber-baby-buggy-bumpers because there is no way to see all the potential damage or know the cost of repairs.

You're pretty lucky the damage was only $800; when I read your original post I was thinking $1,500 to $2,000. --TK

The back passenger door of my Prius has been damaged, nothing major, but enough to spend a couple of days, maybe a week or 2, in the body shop.

Oh well... life is still good...

    Zaxcom,

Sorry to hear about the little fender bender but glad it was minor. Upon my car being delivered in August, the Lot attendant brought it up to the front area (while I was signing the last of the finance paperwork) and while the Manager was reviewing, I said "Do you mind if I go take a look at it again, while your reviewing the signatures etc?". They said oh sure go ahead...

Checked the car over for any dings or anything and all was good until I got to the front Bumper! The lot attendant who brought it up, brought it to an area where there was a concrete wall, but HIT IT and scratched the heck out of the bumper. Some of the tiny concrete was still on the bumper top! So needless to say, R/R and in the shop for 2 days for repair before I put any miles on it! :(

They did a good job and looks like new....full lifetime warranty on the repair. Dealership is large and doing well so some comfort that way. But people ARE self absorbed today. I see people doing dumb A** stuff all the time more and more each day. I don't know what happened to the real fun of driving but it's like they are in there MOBILE OFFICE now, and FAST FOOD DINER!

Good Luck on the repair! I am sure you will not even notice it. Drive safe! Good Luck!;)

Sometimes people just aren't careful enough. I had a SUV first cutting 2 lanes across the freeway then somehow assumes there shouldn't be any cars on the 3rd lane either and almost ran into me. Out of instinct, I just cut to the left and dodged the car, but it was a really bad mistake on my part because I didn't check my left side either. Luckily the left side was empty. What I should have done was a hard brake and hope for the best.....

Just got off the phone making my verbal statement to State Farm (her ins. co.) and they said her statement matched mine exactly, that she just did not see my car and she rolled into the intersection and hit me.

So I think we have something here the military would like. Blue Prius's are invisible!!! Who needs 20 billion dollar stealth technology, all you need is a $23K Prius. :)

Seriously though, they are taking care of me. My body shop is a State Farm preferred shop, so they are doing all the paper work and the claim work. State Farm will pay them directly so I dont have to have any out of pocket money. Rental car will be there waiting for me when I drop my car off.

    Sorry to hear that!

I noticed most of the time, people would just turn right anyway. i guess they figured I'll be taking my time to arrive so they think they'll have enough time to turn right before I arrive at the intersection.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Glad you are alright and the car didn't sustain any major damage.

We have really bad drivers here in Richmond, B.C....it is almost like a war zone where drivers are literally asking for an accident.

I turn on my collision avoidance system :D and be on the lookout for
"Silays" and aggressive women texting, chatting, arguing or whatever with their cellphones while driving. You gotta see it to believe.... unreal!

That's cute; I'm chuckling but only a little because mine is a Ribbon Blue Metallic.

I'm sorry to see this: I don't ever want to have such a close relationship with a body shop I start referring to one as "my body shop . . . " --TK

Well luckily I have only used them twice in 15 years. They know me because my son interned there 2 years ago. Now he is in Toyota training school learning to be a master Toyota tech.

I second good price comment. I chose a certified Toyota Body Shop in PDX to do the repairs paid for by the out of state dealer. Assume they are highest per hour. It was $850 just for them to repaint the panel about the driver side front door (took everything off around it per Toyota OEM standards).

Then they paid another hour in trade for me not having a rental car for a week - which was the time it took to install my door BSM and hood deflector (actually more but think BS felt bad for the dealer : ). Rental would have been about $200.

The cost was based on a rate of $52 an hour; high but not as bad as our local Toyota service rates of $92 an hour. I love living in the PacNW but it is one of the more expensive areas when it comes to everything from doctors/dentist (30% more than Boise) to car repairs. Good luck!
