I was able to get 70.5 MPG average on my way home from work yesterday, mostly highway, 24.7 mile trip. I'm a first time Prius owner so I'm excited to get some good MPG's from my new car I do wish there wasnt such a discrepancy though between MPG if i'm trying hard and MPG if i'm just driving the car w/o caring. In the latter case I tend to get about 47mpg consistently.
The discrepancy comes from physics. It's true with any car, only that most are so bad that you don't really notice the loss of efficiency. It's like not noticing a dripping faucet when your toilet is overflowing. Tom
The question is: what is your best MPG the other way around, i.e. from home to work? You may have got 70 just because you were driving on a long decline... so pointless numbers, unless you do the same MPG in a trip back and forth from A to B using the same route!
yeah, round trip makes a difference. My hilly, 70 mph 26 mile commute bears 50 mpg in, but 40 out. But the last mile in, I get to use EV and get 99.9
True, Indyking, however my last fill up was ~6 miles away from my house on the way TO work (downhill-ish). I reset the trip odometer for the fill up and was more than happy to see the suh-weet! 68.0 reported MPG on my dash when I got to work. Even knowing that the warmup was not included in my trip that morning. and that it would inevitably decline on the (uphill-ish) way home, it was still a fun number to have, if only for a while. :lalala: Robbin
Kudos on the Thread Title. You got me to look. I am slowly working on bringing up my average MPG, and am coming close to 50 for a tank, but a Bad Day can kill the whole tank and is so discouraging. I bet on your 70 MPG trip home, traffic was a little on the slow side? I find it pretty easy to get 70 MPG segments on the level if traffic is crawling around 35 or on a side street with 35 MPH limit. Hills and Warm ups kill the mileage.
That explains it. I can set up short trips in any way I want to provide me a 70+ MPG. Also, I see many people complaining of poor MPG in short trips where the circumstances were not favorable to begin with. But what really matters is how much your tank MPG is and also your lifetime MPG. Those 2 numbers are the most useful for us and for Toyota too for that matter. I really hope someone with considerate influence at Toyota corporation check out this chat every once in a while. There is some nice piece of information here they could use to improve next generations.
