Bear in mind also that you can turn off voice prompting once you're familiar with the system (in SETUP->VOICE). I think you can skip most, if not all, submenus and go straight to what you want in all voice functions (use the command list selection when not moving to review the various commands possible).

Lock outs can always be defeated..... There's a separate thread on this - I am surprised the NAV backdoors (pressing certain portions of the screen at certain times ) are not still there (or we don't know)...

Look to others to undo your *problem*. I just looked on our Lexus NAV and the software backdoor was removed in subsequent releases. Hence if I upgrade our Lexus NAV, I lose the ability to press sneaky buttons, and bypass the whole mess...

Toy decided they don't want that ability (corporate responsibility comes to mind), so it is what it is............ That's what mods are all about

I know our GX has the backdoor, and for the passenger(s), she can watch "Charmed", while I drive the 5 hours to ski... No temptation there to look at the screen from me - I did pull the dash apart for the DVD mod...

I had a similar issue with lockout while driving in 2004 Nissan Murano. Found the location of one wire from GPS to NAV. Cut the wire and installed a switch. Has anyone looked for a similar solution in Prius.

Hidden service menu. Other than the mic volume I don't know what else you can do with it.

Interesting take on this. I already know all the roads where I live so why would I need GPS for that. I bought the Nuvi for those times when I boldly go where I have not gone before.

Personally, I have had very good luck with the Voice Commands on my V.

I know Nissan has a function with their voice command where you can train it to better understand accents or colloquial variations in pronunciation. Is there such a function with Toyota?

I don't know why but I've never been able to get this to work on my 2010 V. Is it possible that there are different versions of the Nav software in the 2010s?

press info button while turning headlights on/off 3 times. some people say the mic setting change doesn't seem to help much. I've done it and honestly can't say whether it helps.

I have found many aspects of the Prius Gen III Nav to be very frustrating, rendering it quite useless. I also would never have bought it knowing how bad it is. The address/POI file is very inaccurate, producing addresses that don't exist, being as much as a 1/4 mile off when navigating to an address, missing addresses, etc. The GPS itself is quite accurate, but it is slowed because it is DVD based rather than hard drive or SD card. For the cost of an upgrade DVD you could buy a pretty good Garmin. The telephone interface sucks, and my $200 Garmin is far superior because it uses the voice recognition of the phone, rather than having to load up my contact list into the GPS. I have complained to Toyota to no avail. The dealer reloaded the DVD, but that of course did no good, and yes it is the current 9.1 version.

After the original batch of Gen III's arrived, Toyota finally began offering HD-NAV features. As for Garmin, stick around long enough & what you'll find is that one manufacturer will be king of the hill, then make junk comparred to the next king of the hill. Our Garmin Street Pilot III was the most expensive on the market at the time it came out, while holding the least amount of memory ... with a proprietary memory stick, so that it can never be upgraded any higher than its now-defunct design. The only reason they did away with such sickening features is because other/better manufacturers made better features ... in essence forcing them to make better & more friendly builds.

My friend has a Gen II Prius w/Nav and she has never been able to figure the thing out and therefore doesn't use it. And this person desperately needs GPS technology in her life. $3K Nav and even with the dealer showing her twice she doesn't use it. She's the type who won't pick up a user guide or manual either. What a waste. She drove 23 mi. out of her way (she got lost) one evening when we were to meet for dinner before she eventually found her way to the restaurant. She uses Mapquest printouts from the web. Not too bright or savvy. I've been on her to get a Garmin but she never does.

    Lottamoxie,

I learned a long time ago that Mapquest is just about useless. What you put in for a location you want is totally different than what it gives you. The map pin isn't even on the address/street you requested (off by a literal mile or more). But you can find the location sometimes on your own [if you have a very good idea of exactly where to look (& you move the map around & use the zoom feature)], otherwise Mapquest is useless. I have much better luck with Yahoo maps or Google maps.

Even though your friend already has the nav option in her package level in her Prius, I wouldn't put too much faith in it getting her to a proper location either. I heard so many negative comments by Prius owners that got that option in 2004 that there was absolutely no way I was going to be forced to take that option package level (the only package my original dealer would order for anybody) just to get my Prius in 2005.

What I did get and love is my TomTom One XL (with the extra large screen). The only thing I don't appreciate is that it only comes with a "quick start" mini-manual (just enough info to get you going), but you have to go on a computer to download the real manual & I'm not savvy enough to do that yet (I only use my computer for e-mails, basic searches for info, & to post here & at PriusOnLine). Maybe a Garmin or one of the other brands comes with a REAL manual.

It sounds like this gal needs you to suggest to her to use Yahoo maps or Google maps (instead of Mapquest) or she needs you to give her a lengthly, repetative, & intensive "crash course" on how use her own Prius nav as a start.

I can't understand why you have not been able to navigate with Mapquest. Works fine for me. I guess I have used it a few dozen times when my assistant prints up directions from them and puts it in a folder for me and it has been totally satisfactory.

Maybe you are doing something wrong? It is hard to believe they could still be in business if everyone had your results.

    Joe,

In my worst case with Mapquest, I was trying to find a small private airport. The people on the phone at the airport told me just to put in "Airport Road" which I did. Mapquest put me right in the middle of a grid of "city blocks' in that mid-size city. When I zoomed in to the level where you can read all the street names, there was no street named Airport Road anywhere to be found (let alone where the map pin was pointing) & no street name that even sounded remotely like Airport Road. Having been in the U.S. Air Force & knowing that most airports are surrounded by a perimeter road for security & maintenance, I zoomed the map out & looked for a big circular road with nothing in the middle. Two or 3 miles north of the location that Mapquest had put their location pin on, I found such a circular road & zoomed in on it. Sure enough, it was called Airport Road. Now, knowing where the road really was, I now was able to get my directions. I had a few more problems of a similar nature with Mapquest until I discovered Yahoo maps & Google maps (which I now use & I never have had any problems with them).

I've told my friend many times to ditch Mapquest and at least use Google maps/directions instead if she insists on using the web. I spent an entire evening trying to talk her into getting an easy/basic Garmin GPS because she drives a ton, is ALWAYS late wherever she goes, and is constantly getting lost.

She has not gotten the Garmin, and continues to use Mapquest even though the directions can be problematic. Plus her nighttime vision is not very good and trying to read directions in the dark? Not so smart.

I've come to the conclusion that she must rather enjoy being late, and often being lost, because she laughs about it and continues to do it despite all attempts to get her to an easy/cheap solution.

    Still, it's a $3K waste for a GPS IMHO.

As for me, I'm a Garmin girl all the way. I have the 660 Nuvi now and will eventually upgrade at the same time I get my new Prius (probably sometime in 2011).

Write Toyota to unbundle the nav and back up camera. I want the backup camera but want my Garmin.

Or, for like $147 at Best Buy, you can buy two linked 9 inch screens that play DVD's off of a cigarette lighter plug and have a plug that will fit into the AUX line-in jack in the center console. No disassembly necessary, and you'll have two screens instead of one. ;)

Nah they will never do that. Because if they did no one will get their Satnav.

I got the Satnav because I wanted the Auto Parking and also the Backup Camera.

If they sold them seperately I will never ever buy their Satnav. They are not stupid, we are.
