Do you know what Honda Insight owners are talking about recently?

Must be nice to live on land as flat as a table and a hill is 2 ft high

 

Just a note that my wife always gets better mileage than I do.

The success of any hybrid car helps other hybrids become mainstream. Putting down other hybrids only leads to fewer choices in the future.

 

It's not hard to get 50 miles per galloon in a Prius. I generally get around 53 miles per gallon without even trying. Even on those short drives.....Insight owners..the two I know get around 44 miles per gallon. They both like their cars though and neither have said anything bad about my car. One like how much room in the back seats....

My local Toyota dealership had an Insight for people to test drive together with the Prius. They also sell Ford cars so they could bring Fusion Hybrids at request. I actually tested my Prius at the Ford dealership.

Trip B has not been reset since new and indicates 50.8 MPG. I did remove the front license plate and have +4 psi on all tires. This gave me an additional 2 MPG.

 

A couple of observations about these statements:
1. The GenII Prius has a rather small discrepency in overall gallons consumed vs. gallons estimated by MFD. In my case it is a little less than 0.8% after 28 tanks.
2. The displayed is not always higher...certainly not on a per tank basis with the Prius bladder. It bounces around alot.
3. If the display was perfect at measuring fuel injected and the gas pump meter was perfect at measuring fuel dispensed, one should still expect the display to read higher than the pump. Why? Because there are some unmetered losses. There will be some gasoline vapor bypassing the injectors via the vapor recovery system. There will be a small amount of gasoline vented during the fill...despite all the whiz bang bladder controls...or in some cases because of them since some folks have resorted to letting the tank vent before filling. There will be some gasoline lost as drips from the pump nozzle itself. Most of these should be tiny, but they do exist. There are likely others.

 

I do not particularly drive for every last bit of mileage but my 2010 returns noticeably better interstate mileage than did my 2006. I keep it on 74 mph and the 2010 is rock steady at 54 mpg driving through the rolling hills of the NC Piedmont. My 2006 gave me 48 mpg making the same trips.

BTW my computer mileage and actual pump mileage have been within 0.5 mpg for all three of my non dealer pumped fill-ups.

Of course, the obvious exception to this rule is the Civic Hybrid II which remains the only hybrid on the market that almost consistently reports lower mileage than actual (1-4 MPG lower). Quite refreshing actually.

But having Honda reverse course on the 2010 Insight makes the optimistic reporting (2-3 MPG) seem premeditated... and sadly, a shameless attempt to match Toyota's affinity to almost always over-report.

As long as you only take one passenger and not much luggage.
The inside of the Gen I Insight is tiny, only 2 seats and almost no luggage space. If you get a chance have a look at one.

 

Exactly, the price difference between the 2010 Prius II and Insight EX is only $700. The LX is really stripped down.

My 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee had the same issue. I never wrote the numbers down, but it was always 1-2 MPG over (and when you're getting 18-20, that's a BIG percentage off ) I just used the "real-time" read out as a rudimentary HSI and kept my own per tank numbers.

P.S. I'm getting over 50 MPG calculated on my first few tanks and I hope that improves as I refine my driving even further with the better tools in the Prius

 

Good point BUT what people should really aim when thinking about buying a Prius is to use less gas, therefore help to conserve the environment, decrease our dependency to foreign oil, and be more financially responsible; as opposed to "the Prius would be a good car even without the outstanding mileage"

 

After 10 filings in my Prius and hundreds in my previous CR-V, the displayed MPG was ALWAYS higher. My neighbor also tells me that in his Honda Civic and Highlander hybrid, the displayed has been also ALWAYS higher.

 

WRONG INFORMATION!

The base model of the Prius (model 2 as I don't think model 1 is available yet) is $22750.

The base model of the Insight (LX) is $20500.

The difference is $2240, NOT $1200.

The difference in combined MPG between the 2 is: 9 MPG in favor of the Prius.

Considering the current fuel prices at $2.45 here where I live:

Prius: $0.049/mile
Insight: $0.059/mile
Difference: 0.01/mile

To compensate for the extra $2240 paid for the Prius, one would have to drive 0.01x2240: 224,000 miles!

 

I post over at Insight Central a fair amount (since I own an Insight EX). Overall people on that board respect the Prius even though they chose the Honda.

What strikes me as ironic in this thread are two quotes from you -

Now read your original post,

In regards to mileage - we have about 3400 miles on ours. We're averaging about 47 mpg. On the highway I tend to get in the mid 40s and in town can routinely get 60.

I do have to agree to some extent. I also participated in some other forums when trying to decide what to buy and I agree that the Prius chat offered to most hostile environment whenever I introduced some criticism about the Prius. It is true that some people here are extremely knowledgeable about the Prius and helped me a lot in my decision, but it is also true that some others are too passionate about it to a point where you can only carry on a decent discussion with them as long as you don't criticize the Prius. Very unfortunate...

 

Listen up, and we'll say it again: the LX is not even comparable to the Prius II. The LX is way stripped down. When comparing base price, for similarly-equipped cars, you need to step up a model in the Insight line, and the gap closes.

Not to mention the things an Insight will NEVER have, like having the air conditioning run when at a stop light.

Not to mention the Insight's cheap feel. As someone else said, the Prius is a nice car, even if it didn't get good mileage. The Insight is a bargain-basement vehicle which also gets good mileage.

When you look at it that way -- which I did -- why "save" a bit of money on a smaller, cheaper car that doesn't get better mileage?

Personal note: I know that I seriously considered the Insight. The ads were VERY cool -- way better than the Prius ads -- and who doesn't want to save money? Honda had the right idea: undercut the Prius, but with all the corners that they cut, they weren't able to be enough cheaper to consider them overall.

 

I think what you are saying is that some of the Insight II drivers are getting better mileage than some of the Prius drivers, or perhaps that some of the Insight II drivers are getting better mileage than the EPA estimate for the Prius.

First wrong information, now wrong way to think!

The whole marketing strategy for the insight is "to make hybrid driving affordable". So, I know the LX is poorly equipped compared to the base Prius model (that’s obvious!), but you DO HAVE the option to buy it! As of right now, there is absolutely NO WAY you can buy a Prius below $ 22750, period!

 

Geez, guy's lets get back to beating on the oldsmobuick SUV's and recognize the Insight guys and gals for what they are, Comrades in Arms. I would have said fellow travelers, but that just doesn't sound right
