Cry havoc and let loose the dogs of war! A bona-fide automotive enthusiast -- and a professional one at that -- has purchased a Toyota Prius hybrid. What's next? Maybe tomorrow the sun will rise in the west?

The target the dogs are charging toward, ahem, is me. And I must admit: Even I'm surprised by my most recent auto acquisition. In the past I've owned sporty cars, but because much of my extracurricular work and fun leans toward the adventurous, over the years the St. Antoine garage has tended to house sport/utes: i.e., a GMC Yukon, a Jeep Wrangler TJ, a Land Rover Discovery (laugh not-in three years of rugged service only a rear-window switch failed). Now, though, the hulking tires and muddy fenders have been replaced by the creased white flanks and low-rolling-resistance rubber of a 2010 Prius. The strangest part? The enthusiast in me digs it.

I agree with the author, I have been an enthusiast since I was old enough to know what cars were and this car is exciting. But unlike him I see it as a very good car for rural highways, just watch out for big rocks. How it does in winter remains to be seen, but no problem I still have my 4WD pickup.

That was a nice litle article.
I guess a popular misconception is that there are all types of automobile enthusiasts.
Some prefer 4x4's and pickups on lift kits, some prefer horsepower, and others love the handling of a sports car on a winding road.
Just because you love your hybrid doesn't mean that you can't be an enthusiast, in fact I think that the majority of the daily contributors here are bigger "car guys" then the typical automotive enthusiast.

It would be like saying that if you don't buy tickets for your Pro Baseball team means that you aren't a true fan. Or that only the best fans buy season tickets. While others may love the game just as much or more, but have no interest in going through the hassles and expenses.

Oh, that's easy. How 'bout this: "Hybridfest, held each summer
in Madison WI, is like Sturgis for hybrid enthusiasts, except
that there aren't quite as many of us and nowhere near the same
    amount of beer."

The only 'real humans' I have to chat about Prius stuff at work have been the Corvette owner and the Mustang owner. Even the other hybrid owners, there are three, tend to look back with glazed eye balls when I start chattering about brake specific fuel consumption or four wheel alignment.

Of course I never have that problem at PriusChat or the other Prius forums I post at ... <grins>

Regardless, I welcome a Motor Trend author to the Prius community as well as Edmunds finally getting a clue (although apparently one is still trying to like his Insight.) It is a good 'Trend.'

Also, not *near* as many disgusting tattoos or wild, orgiastic back alley parties

Note: if there actually *are* wild orgiastic back alley parties, I want an invite!

In a way that's my arguement against people who say The Prius "isn't fun to drive". To me enthusiast just means something you are enthusiastic about. You can be enthusiastic about automobile, looks, speed, power, efficency...whatever.

Can Enthusiast and Hybrid co-exist? Way too late for that question. Look at this forum. Prius Chat people are on one level, simply people enthusiastic about their chosen automobile, this has been happening for over a decade and is growing.

But to me, there is little end difference between someone that enjoys driving their automobile because it can go 0-60 in under 8 seconds, or someone who enjoys driving their automobile because they can get it to give them 50+ MPG, except of course for the person saving gas, is enjoying the experience while saving fuel, burning less fossil fuel and creating less smog.

Enthusiast is all about what we choose to be enthusiastic about.

To answer the question, it depends on what you are enthusiastic about. Efficiency? Low CO2 emissions? Saving money on gas? Check, Check, and Check.

Going down the street in a drunken furor at twice the legal limit? Sorry, have to pass on that one.

Yep. A friend asked me "Is the Prius fun-to-drive?" I'm not sure why he asked, maybe he heard/read it from somewhere. I told him if you mean the traditional sense of a fun-to-drive sports car? hell no. But is the Prius fun-to-drive? heck yes! Instead of worrying about g-forces and cornering, you're thinking traffic flow, terrain, different routes.

    oh snap!

So now we have the Republican Senator who spoke of his Prius on CNN, and now this magazine "car enthusiast" editor. Finally, the rest of society is embracing the Prius. :)

Time to gear up battery production!

It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slowly. Maintaining the momentum of the car and proper cornering technique (yes, thinking about g-forces and weight transfer) is part of the fun. I'd much rather drive the Prius around Road America (raceway) than sit in northside Chicago traffic in an M6/AMG/[name you favorite high horsepower vehicle here].
