I think I've narrowed it down to these two, the T-Bones and the Thelma.
    Thelma:
    Saris Cycling Group

    T-Bones:
    Saris Cycling Group

I'm new to bike racks and want to read some opinions on these two models, and what the pros/cons are of each type of rack. (the stand up vs. the hanging kind)

I like that the T-Bones can double as part of a storage stand...but aside from that, is there any major difference between the two aside from the $80? How much should I expect the bikes to sway and bang against each other?

Can the car's rear hatch still be opened with either of these rack types installed?

I really wish that Euroclick was available here.
I also saw the Thule Roadway and Parkway models...
I want something that is easy to put on/take off, and that allows me to open the rear hatch preferably without removing the bikes and the rack.

If anybody else has some suggestions, let me know!
    Thanks.....

i have the thelma 2 bike on order. i will post pics once it arrives. i have a Thule hanging type and didn't like the way the bikes would sway without using the additional tie down strap.

Sweet... Please post some pics and info when your Thelma arrives.
I'm curious to know if it allows the rear hatch to be opened/closed while the rack is loaded with bikes. I'm not sure if all hitch-mounted racks allow this or not, but it is a must for me. I really don't want to deal with having to take the rack and/or bikes off just to get into the rear of the car.

    Here's my Thelma experience:

    Saris Thelma

In the end, this is the rack I'd buy again. It has been the best hitch-mounted rack of owned, though it did have a few warts. The fact that it is secure and light-weight were big sellers for me! And yes, the hatch will open with the bikes on there. Easier with a road bike on the inboard position since the bars aren't as wide as the mtb - but both work just fine.

    darell,
i read your webpage review and see that you had problems with the soft plastic and the nuts. i wonder if i should use regular nuts and some loc-tite to avoid the issue? thoughts? blue or red loc-tite? not a good idea either way?

If I were to buy a new one now and assemble it, I'd use the included hardward, but I'd do two things differently. I'd first thread all the Nylocks onto the screws first. This pre-taps the nut inserts, and certainly makes them spin on easier the second time around. And I'd probably also hit them with WD-40 before assembly. This will lubricate them going on, and will quickly evaporate (to allow the Nylocks to work properly with their extra friction). I think doing one or both of these would create a perfect and easy assembly - avoiding all the problems I had. Normally I think these things through a bit better, but was all excited to get it built and on the road!

I've even heard rumor that Saris modified the front wheel cup after I sent my photos to them. But that's not been confirmed.

Truly, it is a really good rack. With just a bit of extra effort on Saris' part, it could have been GREAT.

good idea on pre-tapping the nylon nuts. i think i will go that route. i'll let you know if Saris did a re-design on the wheel cup.

btw, did you stick with the rear tire holders installed reverse?

Ugh.... I'm still trying to decide between the T-Bones and the Thelma.
I found a place that has the Thelma 3 on "closeout special" for $191.89 (http://www.bikeman.com/AR4221.html),
which seems to be a pretty good price. I only require a rack that holds 2,
but for the price, I might as well go with the 3 bike version.

However, I really like how the T-Bones only weighs 10 pounds and removes from the car with literally the flip of a switch, AND it doubles as a storage stand for the bikes.

Can anyone offer any strong PROS or CONS for either of these models or rack styles?
I'm having trouble deciding for myself...

    Thanks. That'd be great!

Nope. While I liked how it held my shorter wheel-based bikes, I discovered that the straps really need to be at the other end to hook to the wheel cup when the whole thing is collapsed. You can see how the thing straps together when foled up - so the wheel cup doesn't come loose and hit the car.

I wish I could help, but am just learning about the T-Bone myself. I think I've given several PROS for the Thelsma. Looks like lots of great stuff in the T-Bone - and in such a light package. Truly awesome. The benefits are many and obvious. The only downsides I immediately see:

The bike hangs from the top-tube. After finally getting away from this, I'm very hesitant to go back. I love holding the bikes by the wheels. No paint touches the rack or gets abraded. On a cheap bike this isn't an issue. When you pay $1000 for paint, it is an issue. :) Also, some full suspension bikes will be a pain, and you'll need to get the phantom top-tube to make it work. For now, at least most bikes have two wheels in roughly the same place!

I'm sure somebody will chime in with a T-bone soon.

Well... just ordered my Curt hitch.

I think I'm gonna end up going with the T-Bones instead of the Thelma.
I really do like the mounting style of the Thelma, but the light weight, simple removal, and the storage stand of the T-Bones has me just about sold.
I don't want to drive around with the rack on back all the time, even when not transporting bikes... and I don't want to have to bust out the ratchet and tools to take it off every time either.

Hopefully there won't be an issue with scratching the bikes up.
It does come with "anti-sway" mechanisms, so hopefully that helps...and hopefully the mounts themselves are padded enough to not cause any damage.

I will be sure to post some pics and a review when I get it.

edit: I ended up ordering one of the T-Bones racks also. Hopefully they'll be here by the end of the week. That would be awesome!!
Hopefully I'll be able to install the Curt hitch by myself.
