AVID has slow leak from nail....

    Happens to me frequently. At least once per year. The Discount Tire usually repairs the tires for free. Since the car/tire has only 2,000 miles, will Toyota repair / replace the tire under warranty?

    My guess would be no; just my guess, based on the inclusion of the separate tire warranty with all your paperwork. My guess, without pulling my papers, is that you'll have to go to a Yokohama dealer. That's probably why Discount Tires will do the repairs; as I recall, they sell Yokohama. --TK

    Your dealer might do it as a courtesy, but unless you bought tire damage insurance, puncture damage isn't covered by the car or tire manufacturers' warranties.

    My salesman was very clear that Toyota doesn't make the tire and they don't warranty it. It's covered under the separate tire warranty.

    In the glovebox with all the documentation, isn't there a separate warranty thing for just the tires from the tire manufacturer? I know mine had one for my michelins.

    Hey Bruno,

    Just picked up my Prius 2010 Model V on Friday and last night I noticed the TPMS lit. I looked (Visually) at the tires but they appeared to be ok. So, today I got the Digital Tire Pressure guage out and found the Passenger rear had 15 lbs! I checked the tired and of course, there is a NAIL in between the tread....

    I was going to take it to the dealer but they don't cover road hazards like a second market tire dealer does.

    I weighed it out today since the Tire shops and Dealer is closed, and figured I might as well go get it repaired first thing in the morning at a local tire shop. Toyota won't do much different, they "may" wave the fee since it was only 24 hours before it happened, but something tells me either way, I don't want to wait. It's a slow leak for sure. Could have been in since delivery don't know for sure. But the 10.00 or whatever to repair since it's in the tread is safer sooner than later.

    I have not read my tire warranty but I would be hard pressed to think they cover any type of road hazard. I am just glad it was in the tread and not the sidewall. Further complicating the look for a soft tire is that the V has low profile tires and since I am not used to them they must not easily show tire pressure loss of air, as the sidewall was as hard as anything and no soft bubble look at the bottom of the tire. I will be smarter and wiser now as a result. If Toyota does say they would cover I will let you know.

    Tires are NOT warrantied by Toyota, only by the manufacturer. If you purchased a road hazerd warranty that would cover the repair. I would caution however to avoid "plugs" for tire repair. They sometimes can cause belt separation which can lead to tire failure, usually at higher speeds. An internal patch is the only type of tire repair we will do at my shop.

    There was with my documentation, but I've never seen a tire warranty that covered road damage.

    I typically have them seal the inside of the tire (tread area) and if that's what your referencing, the old days with the hot PLUG are not as safe in the long term. So as long as they take the tire off, patch the tread area (inside the tire) that's what your referring to??

    Thanks all for the replies. The TPMS is awesome, in previous incidents I had already driven around with a very low tire before I noticed the problem. The tire had 22 psi when I turned the car on and I got the warning light.

    The Discount Tire will inspect and, if the tire can be repaired, will do an inside repair for free. They have repaired for me at least three nail damaged tires. Of course when I need new tires I buy them from them.

    Yep! You got it exactly right. If the nail/screw/foreign object is in the tread area, we will repair it. If it is too close to the edge of the tread, I will refuse to repair it on the basis of safety. BTW, I have seen just about everything stuck in tires from tools to bones. :eek:

    This happened to me only 3 days after I got the car. Since the dealership had driven it down from a neighboring state for me, they had actually put more mileage on the car than I had at that point. So they agreed to handle the replacement for free, but they didn't have the matching tire in stock. I had to wait another 2 days, & make another trip to the dealer, before it got straightened out.

    Same here. And the more sinister problem is the unavailability of replacement tires to match your other originals. Mine has a screw in the sidewall and needs to be replaced (not under warranty). I'll apparently have to wait a while. They are nowhere to be found in Austin, Texas. That includes the dealers.


    It seems like someone in Toyota’s supply chain management might have anticipated this at some point when they specified the new tires. It also seems like the dealers would want to keep a few in stock so that their customers are not left without the use of their newly purchased cars waiting for replacement tires. And yet..
