I took possession of a 2010 Prius III on August 1. After being away almost immediately on vacation, which delayed me in becoming familiar with the new car, I discovered last week, to my delight, I'm receiving XM Radio even though I have not subscribed to it. The dealership where I bought the Prius seems to have no clue why this is so. If this is a throw-in provided by Toyota, does anyone know how long the XM Radio gift subscription will last?

Prius Chat is great. Thanks in advance for your kind, helpful advice! Rickcincy

I didn't receive any info on the XM .. Do I need to cancel it myself or does it do it on its own? If I have to do it, any idea on what to do?

If you don't want to keep it, you don't have to do anything. After 3 months it will stop working. If you want to subscribe at the end of your trial, go here:

    https://xmro-secure.xmradio.com/listenercare/oemlogin.xm

You'll need your radio ID - tune to Ch. 000 using the tuner knob and write it down.

You get a letter telling you about the XM about 30 days after purchase...

It will automatically cancel approximately three months after they are notified by Toyota that your car was sold. They will likely contact you via both mail and phone at that point in hopes of persuading you to join.

Haw are you liking the service? I hope that you join too, as I am a subscriber and a shareholder... (of SIRI Stock, that is) ;)

You'll also get a notice in the mail from XM about 2 months after delivery. When the unit is registered (by the dealer during prep) your car info is provided to XM. I just received my notice yesterday. FYI, for audio only - $12.95 month, $38.85 quarter, $142.45 year. Then there's a package with NavTraffic - about 20% more.

IMO XM is Okay. Actually I have a couple favorite FM stations and 6 CD player. Only drive about 10K year - so XM is not a worthy deal for me.

Sorry - bit repetitive here; didn't see the previous posts minutes before mine....

It's a "limited" 3 month subscription BTW. That means there is a limited selection of channels. There were two channels I wanted to check out but they were not available. Well that was an automatic I have no reason to subscribe to the service.

"Limited" in that it's the XM Everything + Traffic demo. You don't get the "Best of Sirius" or the "Premium" channels (i.e. Playboy). You could request them though by calling them up with your radio ID.

I'm sorry not to remember where this was posted, but I thought I read a suggestion from another PCer to call XM and request a one-year subscription at a discounted price that XM was offering elsewhere. I know this is a pretty vague statement, but perhaps it will jog someone's memory.

Also, is it possible to purchase more than one year at a time? Lifetime?

If there was a cheap lifetime purchase I would consider it but otherwise I wouldn't pay for radio when an iPod is so cheap nowadays (but thats just me)

Yes, you can pre=-pay for multiple years, up to three at a a time. The total cost for three year subcription is $458.00, while the lifetime (as I purchased) costs $500. (Keep in mind that this will transfer with the car, and not stay with you for OEM radios). I think that if you pay for a year, you get a free month, two years, 3 free months, and 3 years, 5 free months, or something like that. But for $42 more (between 3 year pre-pay and lifetime) it was a no-brainer for me.

I added Best Of Sirius to this, as I needed to have Howard Stern, and was only $499 total. The only additional fee you will have on top of this, if yo choose to add it, is the $4 per month fee for 'NavTraffic', as I find it indespensable for my daily commute.

Also, several folks here mentioned that if you allow the free trial to expire, they will try to sell you a discounted plan for something like $78 for 6 or 12 months, but I do not have all the deals.

I must have gotten the "new" demo package because I only get about 20-25 XM channels.

Some people have gotten a $77 a year deal by calling 800-347-0600 and telling them that they would subscribe for a year only if they can get this deal.

But now they have added some new monthly fee on that the government is making the satellite radio companies pay so they are passing that onto us... So it's $77 plus whatever the new monthly fee is, I forget. I was going to subscribe but with this new fee and the fact that I am a lifetime Sirius subscriber and their billing departments STILL have not been merged yet I think I am going to just burn MP3's to cd's...

Edit: Here's the info on the new fee - it's called a U.S. Music Royalty Fee†of $1.98/month for primary subscriptions and $.97/month for multireceiver subscriptions...

Are you sure? When you hit scan, it only scans the group you're currently in (Rock, Pop, Country, etc.). You can change the group using the Style/Folder buttons on the right side of the radio. You can also access all the channels by turning the tuner knob. The arrow buttons on the steering wheel cycle through your presets (you get 3 banks of satellite presets).

So a lifetime subscription is tied to a unique receiver ID, not an owner? If I sell the car (with the receiver), the new owner gets my lifetime subscription? Or worse, if it gets stolen, I'm out of luck? That doesn't make a lot of sense to me, unless I'm missing something. If that's right, and I did get a lifetime subscription, you can bet I'd uninstall my XM receiver to keep for myself! I don't see why they wouldn't let you transfer a lifetime sub between receivers. All they have to do is "push a button." No wonder Sirius/XM has yet to make a dime in profit!

Well, I just answered my own questions. From the XM website:

    9. Lifetime Subscription Plan: A "Lifetime Subscription" is one that continues for the life of the Receiver equipment. A Lifetime Subscription is not transferable if it is associated with a Receiver installed by an automaker or an automotive dealer in a vehicle, except in the event the original Receiver associated with that Lifetime Subscription is stolen, accidentally damaged or if, in the sole discretion of SIRIUS XM Radio Inc., it is defective. A Lifetime Subscription associated with a home, portable, or dock & play Receiver is transferable from one Receiver to another Receiver, up to a maximum of three (3) times. Each permitted transfer of a Subscription is subject to a transfer fee. If you transfer a Lifetime Subscription from one Receiver to another or from one person to another, you will be charged a transfer fee. The current transfer fee is set forth in these Terms. No transfer fee will be charged for the transfer of a Lifetime Subscription associated with a Receiver installed by an automaker or an automotive dealer if, in the sole discretion of SIRIUS XM Radio Inc., the Receiver is defective. Lifetime Subscriptions are nonrefundable. You may cancel a Lifetime Subscription but if you cancel during the first year of service you will be charged a cancellation fee set forth in these Terms. Thanks for your diligence in answering your own question. A friend who is a Sirius lifetime subscriber had told me he just transferred his subscription to the used truck he purchased after his other used truck had died. Evidently if the satellite receiver is not factory installed, it is transferable. I was seriously considering a lifetime XM subscription, but I won't do it now because I could not transfer it to the next generation Prius (should the opportunity arise). I'm not good at reading the fine print, as you are! :plane:

I've had lifetime in three other cars. Two of those I've sold, and it was just a selling feature "lifetime satellite included". I owned them all long enough to recoup the investment. I don't listen to satellite much, but I will probably buy the lifetime for the Prius to save any hassle.
