Has anyone ever added a smart door handle to the passenger side of a car that was equipped with the drivers side smart door handle only?

If so what was the cost and how hard was it?

    Hello Jay:

My understanding is that the SKS system is much more involved than just the handles. Each SKS door has its own proximity sensor system.

That being said, I don't know if all the G3 models have all the proximity sensors preinstalled or not.

Agreed, I don't think it would be ecomonical to do considering all the parts involved etc... Not to say it cannot be done, quite anything can, but this is something if the car isn't bought this way it'd be a costly mod.

Now people will say yeah but I can get parts like handles off junked ones, but we're talking GIII here and I don't think junked parts will be around easily for some time...

    jaywolf,
I thought about that actually. However, it is much more involved than what meets the eyes.
    You would need
    - new door handles for rear doors
    - new sensors inside the rear doors
Plus, don't know if our SKS ECU can handle the extra two sensors inputs. Or, does the firmware needs upgrade at all. If so, it is nearly impossible for us unless you work for Toyota.

I've looked at the wiring for the Gen2 system and found that it probably was ready for a 5 door setup. My guess is that all Toyota cars with SKS (Lexus, Prius, ?) use the same computer and receiver. What varies is the number of handles with sensors and transmitters.

So, first guess is that all you do to add additional doors is to install the additional handles/transmitters plus the wiring. You could probably add the back doors if you wanted to.

Guesses are easy. Figuring out the details is going to be a lot more difficult. I just tried to find details on the transmitters at each proximity area, and came up blank. If you have to add wiring (it could already be there, but I doubt it), then you'll be adding pins to existing connectors. It's going to take a lot of research to identify each little part, and where it would go on a car that doesn't already have it.

The transmitters that I'm referring to are 134.5 KHz units found at each proximity detection area. On a Lexus, that would be each door, the trunk, inside the trunk, and inside the car (console?). The 3-door Prius setup skips the back doors. The 1-door Prius setup skips the passenger door and trunk. Note that the parts list names a keyfob as a transmitter. I don't know what they name these proximity transmitters.

When you said "transmitter", did you mean "sensor"?
There is only ONE antenna coil which is usually near the ECU somewhere near the dash.
The sensors in doors, hatch pick up(receive signals) presence of fob and send input to ECU. ECU then sends out info thru coil antenna to the fob (broadcast).
That is my understanding of SKS. I maybe wrong. Please correct me if so.

Our problem is neither my wife or I like leather interior. We are cloth people. We wanted cloth so we were limited to the III even though we wanted some option included in the IV. So we ordered and found a III with the sunroof and have been happy with it but I would like to have both front door handle to be smart.
I did set it so the drivers door so it unlocks all the door not just the drivers door. That is better.

Only thing we are not happy with is the 8 speaker JBL radio, it sucks.

I'm a cloth person too. For that reason, I only looked at the II and III. However, the JBL was a big factor for me in deciding to get the III. I think it sounds pretty decent.

No sound comes out of any of the 4 rear speaker unless you put the fader totally to the rear then the whold system sound tinny.
I took it to the dealer andthey told me all of them were like that.

The radio in my old 96 Dodge work truck sounds better, 10X better.

    A little more research...

The Gen2 3-door SKS system uses a total of 5 "Oscillator" devices. They are named "Door Oscillator Front LH", "Door Oscillator Front RH", "Room Oscillator", "Luggage Oscillator (Inner)", and "Luggage Oscillator (Outer)". Control lines going to them are named CLG1, CLG2, CLG5, CGL7 and CLG8. There are unused pins on the Certification ECU sufficient to allow connection of the missing CLG3, CLG4, and CLG6. One may assume that CLG3/CLG4 are for the rear doors on the Lexus. CLG6 is a mystery.

There is one "Door Control Receiver", located in the trunk area near the gas filler cap.

My reading of this is that the oscillators transmit a short range "are you there?" query on 134.5 KHz. When a keyfob is in range, it hears the query and replies as if an unseen button had been pressed on the keyfob. The keyfob transmits on 317 MHz to the single receiver. Quite how the system identifies which transmitter triggered the reply, I don't know. Perhaps a separate signal is sent out on each oscillator in sequence, and the reply is assumed to come from the location that last transmitted.

The SKS disable switch is connected to a signal called "CNSL" on pin 25 of the Certification ECU. Betcha there's nothing connected to that pin on the 2010. Might be able to add the switch to a 2010 by connecting it to pin 25 and ground. YMV.

Chances are the wiring harnesses in the doors won't have the wiring for SKS (saves weight and cost), thus you'd be pulling your own wiring as well.

That was simple, right in the book, page 48.

The dealer set my fob button to unlock all the doors with a simple press of the button when they changed the reverse beep and passenger seat beeping.

How did you set the drivers door so it unlocks all the doors?[/quote]

It is possible to set which doors the entry function unlocks. Turn the "POWER" switch OFF. When the indicator on the key surface is turned off, push and hold or for approximately 5 seconds while pushing the but-ton on the key. The setting changes each time an operation is performed, as shown below. (When changing the setting continuously, release the buttons, wait for at least 5 seconds, and repeat .) another way around this 1 door problem.

my wife put the fob on her purse strap. so when she approches the car she pushes the unlock on the fob to get into the hatch with groceries.

one thing to note using the fob to unlock. when you press the unlock fob button once it only unlocks the drivers door if you press it twice it opens all doors.

Yup, the dealer did it for me! I changed the SKS to unlock all at once.
