For the G2, there are indications that using more than 87 may actually have detrimental effects.

All very well. I assume the octane number is the same as we use in Oz. Looking at the specs for the Prius the engine appears to be the same interms of compression ratio.

Here Toyota tell us to use 96 RON petrol in the Prius which corresponds to our Unleaded Premium and is considerably more expensive than the standard unleaded at 91 RON.

Not really in a panic as my car (when it arrives) is a leased company car and a petrol card is provided but in four years time if I decide to keep it I will have to start paying for my petrol and then I will notice it.

There was an error in the manual for the U.S. Prius that recommended premium fuel. It has since been corrected by Toyota. Perhaps your manual has the same mistake.

Yes!!! The car can only use 87 so each time you use 89 octane there will be two octanes left over. After 20 tank fulls the gas in the tank will reach 127 octane. 127 octane fuel is very unstable, so if you drive on a gravel road the vibrations will cause the molecules to rub together inside the tank and to quickly reach their flash point. This would cause an explosion approximately 3 times as powerful as the Hiroshima bomb. It would not be covered by your warranty.
