Rear view mirror replacement

    Sorry to hear about your lens...

    My harness had black (ground), yellow (Batt), red (IGN), and 2 green for temp that will not be used.

    I did some research on the Techinfo site and found a installation guide and a troubleshooting guide. Basically the same install however, the harness has different wire colors and connectors.




    So this is what I figured out from these docs.
    • on the 20 pin map light connector, the black (ground) connects to the White/Black wire which is pin #20 (this pin number may not be correct - found during install)
    • on the 20 pin map light connector, the yellow (Batt) connects to the Red wire which is pin #1
    • for the red (IGN) connection, you need to run a wire around the car (like in the Gentex doc) and you can connect it to the Grey wire (pin #8) that is in the 10-pin outer mirror switch connector - so you have to take off the lower left panel in the car.

    At this point, I have identified where to connect and have built a much smaller harness. So in the morning, I plan to actually do the install.

    I'm interested in getting a better rear view mirror setup. Does this mirror have a wider field of view than the stock mirror?

    Did you get one of those plastic covers to hide the wires by the windshield? I need to find one.

    Actually, I just ordered one. Weeeee.

    I'm going to see if I can use the lead to the overhead LED, since the mirror will only need to dim when it's dark (When I hopefully have my lights on)

    I am guessing that the IGN is used for the HomeLink (so you car does not have to be on to open the garage door) and not for the mirror dim part.

    do you mean BATT for homelink so it doesn't need turned on?

    There's not an actual lead going to the LED, it's soldered into a printed circuit board that also holds the two map light bulbs, map light switches and the wire harness connector. I know because I removed the LED as I don't need a gear shift spotlight :) But you could solder wires where the LED is.

    but there has to be a wire in that harness to trigger the LED.

    sorry, right...BATT for homelink...IGN for the dimming mirror...

    so, as the young kids *might* say, "homelink is in 'da hiz-ouse."

    I only wired up the homelink and programmed both garages to it. I'll wait until someone can tell me which wire feeds the circuit to the LED so I can scab power from it for the auto dim.

    I've had the mirror up for a couple days, and I'd have to say that I'm not really bothered that the autodim isnt' hooked up yet.

    Boy, those wires are THIN!

    If you have a meter, look for a 12V source that is on only when the IGN is on...(I thought about that "after" I ran the other wire).

    I did the same with the mirror, but now I do see a big difference when it dims (no more truck headlights in the eyes).

    Yes they are thin!!

    I will. It looks like there's a purple wire for the sunroof, I'll see if I can find it (I'm color blind). It was getting too hot in there, so I'll poke around later for the IGN 12v source.

    Can anyone who's actually pulled apart their overhead light cluster take a pic of what's behind the plastic? I'm surprised to hear (at least, it sounds like) that there isn't an "unused" harness already up there where the mirror could be attached by the dealer!

    I have a Gentex Homelink/autodim unit (not sure of the model #) that I installed in my previous vehicle and now want to move to the Prius but I'm unsure if the glass mount is the same and how much work it will be to get the required power to the unit...

    oh, it's up there. It's short and the wires are darn near hair. I think I fried the autodim on the one I had tryign to figure out what wires did what with a different car battery. But, once I get the windows tinted, I won't care. I didn't have directions and my harness was different colors than what's on the web site. OOPS. But, I was able to program the homelink button on the workbench before I installed it.

    I was mostly interested in the home link functions as I have 2 separate garages in which I park.

    BTW,the wiring harness is right near the rear-most part of the light console (closest to your head)

    Do you happen to have any info on what colors on the harness (at least, your harness) on the car side do what? I know what colors are what on my mirror, I just need to determine where to tie them in to on the factory harness

    I'd love to, but I'm colorblind, so I had to test it on the bench, then have my 9 year-old show me which was purple.

    During bench work, I fried the autodim. There was a gray and a gray/black, so I figured, go gray=+ gray/black=-....spark! Mirror went blue, slowly cleared up, and never went blue again. Oh, well. Live and learn.

    I ended up pulling down the overhead light console last night. Not exactly what I was expecting/hoping for -- I was hoping we'd get lucky and that there would be an "unplugged" harness / connector hanging out above the headliner that we could just tap into. It appears that the only way to do this would be to solder onto the map light PCB, or cut/tap into the bundle of wires that runs to it, or to just go down the A pillar.

    How does the dealer connect the mirror, if you purchase it as a dealer installed option? Has anyone seen the install guide at all?

    there are hot wires it that console. The wire that feeds the overhead LED is only 5v. I've heard some went down the a-pillar for autodim power.
