BMS+ w/4 prius packs Vs. Enginer 4KWH?

    Digging around more... I've seen 1.3KWH to 1.5KWH listed for prius packs.. that would mean adding 3 new prius packs (3.9KWH?) would be about the same as adding the Enginer 4KWH pack? -- except LifePO4 would charge faster, so this would be the better way to go?

    At $3000, it's about twice the cost of getting 3 used prius packs from auto dismantlers in the area at $500/each. (plus cost & time to reassemble them to fit in the cargo area).

    Does anyone know if it would be possible to use the Enginer PHEV pack (the rack, thundersky batteries, charger, etc.) with BMS+ solution rather than the NiMH prius packs?

    the Nimh oem battery packs only hold up to 1kwh at most that you use with the BMS+
    so with 2 addpacks your have 3 kwh.

    According to Ron's spread sheet from Calcars, the Prius NiMh pack at 75% DOD has 1.3 KWH capacity. The standard DOD is lower, hence your lower number. As usall, it is a trade off between capacity and battery life. I think all the conversions lean toward capacity.

    i was talking about around -70% soc not 75%

    but i tested 2 packs and did not get past ~1kwh depleting from ~235 down to 195 volts DC.

    this was a 2005 and a almost new 2008 pack.

    the prius batter pack is rated 201,6 volts and 6.5ah .. that counts to 1310,4 watth
    and that is the total battery not just 75%

    Interesting. Since you actually tested it, I would trust that # more then what's on the spread sheet. Thanks for the clarification.

    Anither thing to consider is weight. Each Prius pack is 150lb, so 4 would be 600 lb. The 4kw Enginer kit weighs 180 lb.

    one pack is 45kilograms and thats 99lbs and with a custom housing you can get it down to 40 kilo and so 88lbs... so 2 packs = 176lbs thats 3.9kwh

    He is talking about the total KWH of the 2 add on packs + the OEM.
    My NiMH assemblies weight about 82 Lb each with the steel railing supports. (x3).

    i have to get the pack on a scale again to see what the real life wieght is now
    because i have a aluminium frame with plastic panels... so it must be less then yours

    I want to put my picture in !!!!:)... as an example of what can be done.
    This is an early wiring mock-up of how my 3 packs are installed in the Prius

    Today days, the safety disconnects and Anderson's are on the side of the packs and I added Aluminum plates at the batteries ends with plastic strapping in 2 axis to avoid excessive thermal expansion of the modules while charging.
    The batteries modules support is 1.25" angle stock hardened steel.

    No "Battery Management System" at all, in our case it's not necessary; I was prototype user #1 for the Hybridinterfaces Plus series of electronics and in this type of PHEV equipment implementation it is not required. The replacement Battery ECU (BMS+) does it all.
    On a second note
    The chargers I use now (2) are electrophoresis power supplies, extremely accurate and safe and fully adjustable. Reliable, UL approved and cheap.
    I had implemented temperature sensors in between the battery modules that will trigger axial blowers to recirculate the warm air to keep the batteries at lower temperature while charging and thereafter.
    Keeping it simple but reliable is the key to the operation.

    Are you saying the 4 battery packs are in parallel? Could you clarify that? I would also like to know the model of the power supply, I looked for some on Ebay, but did not find anything that looked suitable.

    YES, 4 (total including the vehicle's one) Toyota OEM in parallel, rendering an extra 4.+ KWH of PHEV usage. All of these integrated with the Hybridinterfaces BMS+ family of products.
    Ebay doesn't always have the necessary equipment, my source was always Manufacturing Recyclers of equipment, some brands are: BIO-RAD, ICC, ISS, Hoefer.......
