Alternate iPhone 3GS adapter to Toyota's iPod adapter

Unfortunately no, my Prius comes next week. I wanted to bring this thing over but the power sockets are in such awkward positions. Your solution will work better, but you'll still want to "mount" it somewhere so you can see the song/whoever is calling.

 

I picked up this Toyota accessory for my iPhone 3G. With the addition of the SCOSCHE PASSPORT CHARGING ADAPTER ($24) adapter the iPhone will charge correctly when being used with the Toyota kit.

My sales person screwed up my purchase some so he opted to pay $100 toward any accessory and threw in some all weather Prius rubber mats.

I installed the Toyota iPod kit without issues in my MY2010 Prius Pkg II (no NAV system) and had no issue with losing the Sirrus radio option.

The music playback from the iPhone works flawlessly using the steering wheel controls and the HU displays, Track #, Playlist, Song title etc.

I'm very pleased so far with how well this Toyota kit installs and works.

My next project is to install the Toyota Blu Logic kit for hands free iPhone use in the car. The installation seems about as easy as for the Toyota iPod kit. I'll be installing the Toyota Blu Logic kit this weekend as expect it to take me around 1 hour.

 

You had no issues with the satellite radio in your Prius 2? Have you had the satellite radio hardware installed before in your Prius? Prius 2 does not come sat radio ready, it needs a hardware instalation that costs about $500 in my Toyota dealer. That was one of the reasons I got Prius 3 instead of 2.

 

What the Scosche Passport does is allow charging on the 5v USB pins. Most iPod car adapters were designed to charge on the 12v FireWire pins. Apple removed support for FireWire charging in the iPhone, creating the problem solved by this adapter. I used it successfully on my JVC iPod adapter, and it magically allowed the iPhone to charge when connected. In my case, it didn't eliminate the 'This accessory not designed to work with iPhone' message, but if you clicked Continue, it worked just fine. I don't know if the Passport includes circuitry to block the GSM radio frequency noise, but I never heard it over the car speakers with that adapter installed. YMMV.

 

Well, I got the Kensington LiquidAUX and tried it out this morning. At volumes above 15, I'm noticing a high-frequency whine, pretty constant, very distracting. It's there regardless of the iphone playing or paused, though goes away when I unplug the iphone from the charge cable. Anyone else experiencing this with the LiquidAUX?

 

Seems to be a common problem for lots of cars and these kind of devices. There's a line filter you can buy from Radio Shack that solves the problem. If you do a search, you should be able to find a thread that has the exact part no.

 

I think its called a ground loop isolator. I ordered one off ebay for ~$10.

 

I am planning on getting the VAIS SL2i-UP installed on my V with AT. I want to be able to use the Sat to get traffic as well as my iPod. We had the same unit installed on our Lexus with Nav and it works like a dream. It plugs into the back of the Nav unit just like the Toyota adaptor. The biggest difference is the Toyota adaptor will not allow the use of Sat once it is installed. The VAIS allows full control of the iPod through the touch screen on the Nav. It turns the iPod on and off and charges it as well. The UP version also works with the iPhone.

I contacted VAIS and they said it will work with the JBL system installed in the V. I should be getting the car sometime around the end of the month and will have the adaptor installed shortly after that and will give an update.

I got the ground loop isolator (from ebay for 9.99)... works great, no more background noise, but the volume is now lower. No big deal, but I got to remember my normal listening volume for the radio is 18 and iphone is 28. Other than that, no complaints, thanks for the advise!

 

Hmmm--I'm finding the research confusing. Not sure whether to go with the iPod interface or Blu Logic kit. We've got a 2010 Prius III on order for September delivery. We went with the III specifically so we could get Bluetooth for the hands free use of iPod Touch, generic cell phone, or iPhone. We did not get the Nav or Roof. However, dealer is now telling me that I cannot get the iPod interface because I have the XM radio capability. So I guess Prius III is incompatible with the iPod interface? Is it also incompatible with Blu Logic? If I get Blu Logic kit, will that work in the Prius III? Will it work with iPod, generic cell, and iPhone? Hope someone can answer these questions.

It is my understanding bluetooth (wireless) audio streaming is only available on the nav units. The non-USB ipod interface (and possibly the coming USB interface for nav) plugs into the same port on the back of the nav or non-nav radio as the XM. If you don't care about XM, all they have to do is unplug it (assuming the non-US interface works with the non-nav radio in the Prius III). PriusTeam (from Toyota marketing) had said the non-USB interface only works with the Prius II radio, but they appear to have been wrong about that, since there have been reports of it being installed in the Prius V nav units. Not sure if anyone has reported putting it in a III, IV or V without nav. There have been good reviews for the bluelogic from users installing it in the Prius II, but again, that is for phone only. You already have bluetooth for phone built into your radio.

I have been looking for the kit you bought locally but couldn't find it. The only thing I could find was the one with the mount. Anyway I went to BestBuy today and ended up getting this:

As I was pulling into the BestBuy parking lot I saw some Toyota signs. I parked somewhat close and as I was getting out of my car a guy walked up to me with his Toyota polo shirt and asked me a few questions about the car. Apparently Toyota was having people test drive some of their cars (didn't see a Prius there though) and then do a short survey. He said since I already had one if I just took the survey they'd give me a $10 gift certificate to Best Buy! It ended up being 3 whole questions. So I ended up getting the adapter for $9.99 + tax! :rockon:

I tried plugging it into the center console area but it felt weird so I instead plugged it into the one further from the aux in. I set it up so the phone is in landscape mode which makes browsing through albums a bit easier. The aux cable runs okay to the plugin but I might take a shot at hiding the cable. Pretty happy with it so far though. So mine looks much like jon_lin's except in landscape.

I haven't noticed a need for the ground loop isolator yet though.

 

That looks very cool. However, deluxe I see for sale in US is different and clunky looking. Where did you get this one? Please advise.
