2010 prius/Iphone 3.0 bluetooth connection question

It should explain how to do that in your Nav instruction package. I know you can do it but I don't have Nav so I can't tell you how to do it

 

When we picked up our new car on Thursday, they told us during our orientation that you could use Bluetooth for music or to connect the phone for calls. Either but not both. The Bluetooth protocol allows one but not the other.

He also went on to say that they recommend that if you listen to music you use a cable into the AUX since it doesn't drain the iPhones battery so much.

 

I have a pkg V with Nav and an iPhone 3GS. I have both the audio and phone connected. I can stream music, podcasts, etc to the car; then if a call comes in or I want to make a call, all the phone functions are still available, and it shows up on the nav screen.

When I first tried to setup the bluetooth pairing, I could only get one or the other. But for some strange reason I finally got both to work by connecting the bluetooth audio first, then the phone. You have to pair the phone twice.

Now when I get in the car, and turn on bluetooth on my iPhone, it automatically connects to both. When I select "BT" on the audio screen of the Nav, it automatically starts playing MP3s on shuffle. Plus all the phone functions are still available.

 

I Have the new 2010 Prius 3 with NAV, I just got a new I-Phone 3GS and it works perfect with the Prius, hands free phone, transfer phone numbers to prius, voice dialing by name...

The music is also working perfect while driving in areas where the G3 network exists, I can play music from Pandora, I also got ooTunes and can listening to streaming Internet Radio from around the world, thousands of radio stations. Of course it will play your saved IPOD music regardless of network.

So the new I-Phone G3S works perfect through Bluetooth.

The older I-Phone G3 will work perfect bluetooth for phone only. The Bluetooth audio for music does not recognize the G3 only phone, but you can still hook the I-Phone G3 directly into the Prius stereo via the stereo auxiliary jack using a small stereo cable so you are not missing anything except not using the wire. You will not see songs being played displayed on the Prius Screen either way.

The sound quality is excellent either way.

 

The 3G phone also works for both phone and music. The bluetooth audio streaming is part of the new 3.0 operating system. However, only the gen3 (2010) nav systems support it (gen2 cars do not).

Could they have meant that you could only use one BT device at a time? That's really the question I have: Could one use an iTouch and another BT phone simultaneously? I don't meant talk on the phone while listening to music; rather, the music would be interrupted by a phone call.

 

I picked up my Prius with Technology Package (Canadian version with Nav) three days ago. I paired my 3G iPhone as a phone and as a music player (requires iPhone firmware 3.0). When I first did this the music would play fine until the screen of the iPhone shut off then the music would go wonky. It would cut out and then seemed to fast forward and then cut out again. When I activated the screen of the phone again everything worked perfectly. As soon as the screen saver kicked in the music went out again. This was very frustrating to deal with while I was in stop and go traffic in a brand new car. Once I stopped, I paired it to the audio system again and the problem has disappeared. Now my only issue is that when I shut the music off it forgets where it was in the track so when I start it again it goes back to the beginning. I suspect this is an iPhone issue not a Prius issue. Today I got my first phone call in the car while the music was streaming from the phone. Everything worked beautifully. BTW the music volume gets turned down and directed through the right side speakers when the Nav system voice comes on. You can hear both but the Nav is much more prominent. To set things up I had to pair the phone through the normal BlueTooth pairing in the Info-Phone menu and then pair the phone again as an audio device on the BT tab of the Audio menu. Currently the iPhone firmware 3.0 does not support any of the fast forward/reverse or volume control functions of BT audio. You can pause and play using a button on the BT tab of the Audio screen and use the volume controls of the audio system.

 

I think it is a iphone issue with the song starting back at the begining rather than pausing. There was another thread in here mentioning that.

 

Maybe my thread... What happens is when you plug it in, the iPhone buzzes twice every 20 sec, and is in scan mode where it plays a 10 Sec clip of a song and then moves on to the next. No playlist control. I have read the manual (Which is dated 08' and good up to iPhone 2.2 when printed) I have renamed my playlists all caps TOYOTA1 ..etc.) I even hooked up an older Video iPod and same thing happens - except for the buzzing, cause they simply did not have a vibrate function. I will fill you in on how that goes after I talk to the techies at Toyota.

Took the car into the dealer on Day II of ownership. (Bummer) Techs are baffled as to why the iPhone/iPod is doing the skipping thing. So they are going to replace it. Personally, I haven't met one person that can give me straight answers about the unit. I think all this is too new to them and they aren't sufficiently trained on the equipment. Nobody can give me a simple answer to the question, "Is the iPod Adaptor compatible with iPhones, specifically the 3G Model". Nobody in service, nobody in sales, and I can't find a place on any Toyota website. I even asked if there was a phone number to call, or website to look at. The tech said there are no alerts or problems listed about the iPod adaptor. So I'm a Guinea Pig.

I had this question that just got blank stares. Let's assume the thing does work when they replace it. If I take the iPhone, and plug it in, what happens? 1) Is the unit/or iPhone smart enough to block out the Bluetooth Music Streaming while keeping the Phone ability open for incoming/outgoing calls? 2) Does the unit shut off all Bluetooth operations in order to utilize the adaptor as its primary function while plugged in - In doing so the phone does not accept or allow phone calls and acts solely as an iPod? -or- 3) Having both systems, the phone defaults into bluetooth mode and only streams music even thought it is plugged in? They couldn't tell me. Like I said, it's all too new.

Help if you can.

 

For your issue classy have you tried a plain jane ipod to see if it works properly?

 

I also have the new 2010 Prius 3 with NAV, and the iphone 3GS works incredible with this car. I actually think the sound is better through the iphone, than CDs, radio etc... Also I like the ability 2 use different phones. My wife has an iphone and we can either play her music or mine no problems at all. That's cool. :rockon:

 

I am not the least concerned about repair and maintenance of the engine, brakes, and running gear performed by Toyota Service Departments. I'm sure the majority of the dealers will do a good job.

However, IMHO the service departments are going to be short on electronic experience, especially for those new devices that just came out for the 2010 Prius. It's just like the field of personal computers. Maintenance personnel have trouble keeping up with the technology because it is always changing, always in a state of flux.

I think that Prius owners should become as familiar as possible with Prius electronics, and make sure that any "fault" that arises is really a fault BEFORE taking their vehicle in for repairs.

I'm not saying that the OP here does not have a real problem (he/she probably does), but in general we owners should make every effort to check an electronic device out ourselves rather than just immediately turn it over to the dealer. No use allowing someone to dig into the interior of a device (and perhaps cause damage) if that is not necessary.

 

For all of you using your iPhone as a music player, I strongly suggest you check out FlickTunes. Of course, I'm just a tad biased, being as I wrote it, so make of it what you will. But it's designed to make your phone/car music experience much more enjoyable (and the reviews seem to suggest people agree). I hope you like it! :rockon:

 

Thanks for that information. I will have to try that tonight! I tried phone and then audio but it would never detect the iphone audio after it was already paired in the phone section. I could only get one or the other detected which I thought was not fixable.

Do you know the exact steps you went through? I am certain there has to be other iphone 3.0 users that tried to get phone and music streaming(audio) working with the prius 2010 model.

The model I just bought yesterday has the USB feature but I really want the bluetooth music streaming for convenience for quick trips where plugging in the iphone into the USB connector for a 3 minute trip would be a pain. I thought for sure I would have to end up choosing either phone or music streaming for my iphone(That would be a hard decision to make for me).

 

Pardon my ignorance, but what is it? How does it work? Do I need to buy an electronic device or something else that is Bluetooth capable? I checked out the link you referenced, and am still scratching my head.

Like previous posts in this thread; I have a Prius IV with Nav and an iPhone 3GS. I paired the phone first and couldn't get the iPod functions to work. I removed the iPhone. Then I paired the iPod function first. This permitted both iPod & iPhone functions to operate.

Music streaming has excellent sound quality and I make and receive calls through the car without ever touching my iPhone. I just followed the instructions from the manual; worked great. --TK

 

I discovered that after adding the iphone 3gs in the audio section for music streaming I had to go and add it as a phone separately. The key thing that confused me is when trying to pair the phone(handsfree feature) nothing new appeared on the iphone and the existing car device listing on the iphone bluetooth screen that was already detected during the audio music streaming pairing did not automatically connect/pair. I had to click on the car device on the iphone bluetooth pairing screen when doing the final phone pairing. I had forgot that you have to select a device when pairing on the iphone screen for some reason(doh).

Now everything is working great over bluetooth and the sound quality for the music is very good.
