We've all been tinkering with our new Prius' and I've goofed up twice so far.

I started this thread to help others avoid doing some dumb things like:

    1. Don't try to see if your iPhone will fit in the forward cup holder with the door closed. It does, after it falls flat on the bottom and gets stuck under the door. Took me 15 minures with fishing line to get the phone upright and out of the cup holder.

    2. The Gen III rear hatch door opens taller than the Gen II. I could open and close the garage door with my 2006 Prius hatch open BUT NOT WITH THE 2010. Luckily, I was able to stop the garage door just before it caught onto the longer spoiler.

Be honest, If you've had some close calls or already done some damage to your 2010, post it here.

I'm sure everyone will be glad to know that if you drive the car with the parking brake on, the car will beep at you! I probably got about 30 feet before I figured out what all the beeping was about...:D

I'm probably so oblivious that I'm doing damage right now without realizing it!

To the best of my knowledge, things are going well so far. . .

Tried to see what would happen if you threw the keys in the car and tried to lock the door-it just sounded a buzzer that was continuous-great way not to lock the keys in the car!!!

That is an excellent idea on Toyota's part! :)
It seems so logical, cars should have had that ten years ago ... but I don't think they had the magnetic key fobs back then.

I know, my Infiniti does that as well, along with a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am I used to have. It wouldn't beep at you, but would just unlock the doors right as you locked them.

Gen II Prius won't allow locked keys either if you have SKS.

I've put a small dent in mine already in the rear door sill on the right side. Had my laptop bag on the back seat and a plastic buckle was hanging over the seat in the door jam. Closed the door before I realized this and it was caught between the trim and the panel. 1/4" long crease maybe 1/4" mm deep. It's not really noticeable unless it's pointed out. Fortunately a very conspicuous place, and no paint damage (+1 for Blizzard Pearl).

We're not talking about key-lockout protection. Toyota has that for years as well.

They only work if the key's in the ignition. If the keys are on the seat and you manually lock the doors with the power door lock switch, they will lock with the keys in the car.

Let me get this right - before I do this someday in the future.

    Smartkey in pocket.
Touch door handle and enter car.
    Push start button and drive
For whatever reason I take the Smartkey out of my pocket and place it in the cupholder.
Park the car and open door and exit.
Close the door and touch the handle - It locks? Wouldn't it open right away again as the Smartkey is within proximity?

No. Different prox sensor inside vs. outside.

I'll have to check to see if the car is ON and this happens if locked from the inside. If it's off and you leave the fob inside and locked the door via interior switch, the car will unlock as soon as you close the door. Might happen if the car is on too, will try it today (with me inside of course).

With your sequence, it will not lock and it will give a long continuous beep.

If you locked with the power door locks, all 4 doors will lock. When you close the front door, all 4 doors will unlock. I don't remember if it'll beep twice (as if you're unlocking it with the remote).

What I was saying in the previous post was if you had a regular key and ignition, not a proximity key like the smart key.

Does anyone know what happens if you hit the Park button before the car is completely stopped? Say, a passenger accidentally pushes it at 60mph? I was parking yesterday and pushed it a little too early (before I completely stopped, maybe 1/4-1/2 mph) and the car jolted and stopped. I hope I didn't do any damage, but I wonder what would happen if someone who didn't know how to use the car pushed it in motion?

At what speed will the car just go to neutral? When I was parking it jerked to a stop (as I was barely moving). Will it go to neutral at 5-10mph, or screech to a halt?

just in passing the only way i know that you can lock the car with you on the outside (with car turned on) is to have remote start. this does not count using a mechanical key

It's in the manual. But it would be cool if you actually tried it and reported back.
