I'm certainly not an expert at driving a Prius, but my technique is to keep on cruise as much as possible... like 90% of the time, even in the city... which requires keeping back from the car ahead by enough distance in order to absorb the slowing and speeding up of traffic without having to change speed. If I do have to slow down I do so by adjusting the cruise so I don't have to disengage cruise. Then when I want to speed up again, I adjust the cruise in small increments to keep the acceleration in the ECO mode as much as possible. Also, I think coasting up to stop signs and red lights will increase mpg. It's pretty hilly here and speed limits change frequently so another technique I use is to wait for declines to accelerate and inclines to slow down when the changing speed limits match the terrain.

We retired to a rural area where the situation allows for the sort of technique I've described, and I remember quite well that when I was commuting to/from work in "the big city" that if I allowed any room between me and the car ahead of me, someone would cut in front and I would have to hit the brakes, then speed up again when the distance increased. I think that situation cuts the mpg.

But maybe my technique is not the best and I could increase my mpg even more by doing something different. Safe driving is most important, so please don't urge me to draft behind semi-trailer trucks!

That doesn't sound right. I just drove up and over the Sierra Nevada mountains and back, with the A/C set to 74deg and at 70-80mph and still got 45mpg in a GenII. :(

Are you making lots of short trips?

You might want to check your tire pressure but it should not make that much of a diffrence.

Check with others in the SoCal area (Thats where I am but don't have my Gen3 yet  ).

Thank you so much for your reply.

Yes I take almost all short trips in here in town.
We got better when we did some freeway driving.

I thought hybrid's got better mileage in town?

Ok that is the problem then.

The Prius does do better in town but short trips will kill your mileage.

Evertime you start the car you have to go through a warm up cycle and the car is not at its most efficient when this happens. In fact it happens with every car and you will not see a 40mpg average in those other cars. The GenIII should be better with this but you will still suffer from short trip syndrome.

The best way to try and bring your MPG up and save fuel is to combine your trips instead of making five 1-5 mile trips per day try to wittle it down to 2 or less and you should see an increase in mileage and a beter use of your time. :) If you simply canot change your driving paterns then just smile and be happy you are still getting great MPG compared to just abotu any other car used in such a way. You may be a good canidate for a full electric car so keep an eye out for those when they become more affordable.

First long trip for me. 300 miles Chicago to Springboro, OH. Two person on board. Going out used cruise control all the way at posted speed limits, AC on, final MPG 52.2. Return no criuse, AC on, student driver at the wheel for half the distance (not very smooth driver yet), final MPG 54.3.

With my Gen II the same trip going out and back with the same conditions would have been low to mid 40's.

    Thank you for your feedback!
I know that I am not going to be the poster child for MPGs but I want to be better!
We are planning a long trip so I will check then!
I sure love my really cool Prius!:)

Please be aware that the mpg guage, at least in my car, is usually off by 2-3 MPG. For instance my guage reading was 55.0 MPG when I filled the tank it came out to 52.8 MPG.

I have over 5,000 miles on the car and it has been consistently off by 2-3 MPG.

Lucky2beme: You need to learn the car to mitigate your short trips and lead foot (when and to the extent you wish). Look for threads on pulse & glide and the stages of operation (warm up). In town, cruise control is easy and fairly decent, but P&G will crush those results when used properly. You have the easiest car in the world to P&G with; all done with nuance on the gas pedal.

You can also look over at cleanmpg for xcel's article on hypermiling the Prius II (04-09 models), plus his review of the Prius III. There is a wealth of info here as well.

Short trips will kill fuel economy, especially when the engine has cooled between trips. This is true of any car, but more noticeable with a high mpg car. HSD hybrids are good in town, assist hybrids like Honda IMAs not so much.

Congrats on your car and good luck to you.

I'm similar to luckytobeme, I suppose. In my IV, display says 43.3 MPG and pretty stable around there for the first 200 or so miles on first tank of gas still. I've had the "ECO" mode on about 90% of time. My commute is about 6 miles/12 minutes one-way.

2nd tank in new my 2010 Prius III (replacing a 2000 Corolla) : 500 miles (I took a detour so I could hit that milestone before reaching the gas station !) on 9.5 gallons for an average of 52.6mpg (55.5 on the MFD). The Corolla was doing 32mpg on the same daily commute, so I love the gain in fuel economy !

For all of you that used to own the Gen II Prius, what percentage increase in mileage are you seeing over your mileage from the Gen II? I assume most of you are doing the same type/style of driving with the new car as the old, so I think many of us would be interested in seeing what kind of improvement you're seeing over the Gen II as well as the raw mileage as that doen't necessarily tell the whole story I think.

47.5 mpg measured fuel for mostly hwy driving. Seems to be less in town but still haven't used up a tank.
