Determining glide eMPG

    and now it sounds like we are making the same point but from different directions. only real question is to determine what works best. but unless you live around here, that is not possible.

    case in point, when i P&G, my ratio is nearly always 3/2...iow, just the opposite of what we are trying to achieve. iu guesss that is why my mileage sucks. but i do what i can, accept the rest.

    well maybe i need to change my set points... well, my set points are constantly changing and that is due to conditions. i live within 5 miles of Puget Sound (used to live 500 feet away) and all ground slopes in that direction.

    complicate the fact that all of downtown Olympia is fill. that was convenient back in the day when silt filled up the harbor and dredging was necessary to get the ships in so they could drop off supplies and haul away timber. but without the fill, the entire city core would be a swamp that would go thru massive flooding every spring. but anyway, the stretches of wide open flat roads aint here.

    when i lived in Michigan, there was not a bump greater than 6 feet high for MILES...that would be a great area... huge tracts of land where there is a light like every mile (the land grant thing back in the 1800's that divided everything up into townships 6 miles square with 36 one mile squares divided into 4 160 acre plots for sale is to blame for that) now that would be the place to pulse and glide!!

    but...not happening here. too many curvy roads, congestion, etc. i try for the backroads when i can and there are a lot of them here ( i live in an area where 3 small towns are basically only a few miles apart. still waaay more than 50 % rural around here. a lot of 35, 40 and 50 mph roads around here. but most are one lane, so hard to not drive a certain way) but i found that around here, steady speeds do much better. that means pretty much driving to never taking your foot completely off the gas or hitting the brakes as much as possible.

    That's the type of place I need for someone to run the experiment to determine glide eMPG :) because I live in a hilly area too.

    OK.
    Let's use the marathon's data.

    Total MPG: 49.51km/L
    Total driving time: 4 hours 21 minutes
    Total distance: 200.95km
    Pulse MPG: 12.83km/L
    Pulse ratio: 26% (more preciously 12.83/49.51=25.91%)
    Total(=Pulse) fuel usage: 4.058L
    The glide time was 4 hours 21 minutes * 74.09% = 3.22 hours
    They do a lot of neutral gliding. We know the base electric consumption is approx 200V 1.0A, 200W on the 2G Prius, during neutral gliding.
    Then, the electric consumption during total gliding was 200W * 3.22 hours = 0.644 kWh.
    A gasoline has 9.61kWh/liter energy and Prius engine efficiency is 37%, then the glide equivalent gasoline fuel consumption was (0.644 / 9.61) / 0.37 = 0.181 liter.
    The glide distance was 200.95 * 0.7409 = 148.88 km, then the glide equivalent fuel economy was 148.88 / 0.181 = 822.5 km/L or 1935mpg.

    I believe the 1935mpg of the glide equivalent fuel economy is nearly equal to infinity.

    Thanks Ken! While I haven't had time yet to look over your figures, assuming they are accurate, did the marathoners have A/C and/or headlights on? These would increase glide mpg.

    The A/C was off, and the data was obtained from day time run.

    These last few comments point out the central fallacy in trying to quantify an equivalent glide mpg. Energy consumed during a true glide is not dependent on speed or glide distance; it is essentially overhead. The vehicle consumes this amount of energy whether it is moving or not, meaning the equivalent mileage ranges from zero if the vehicle is stopped to nearly infinite if you drop it from a helicopter. Equivalent glide mileage could be expresses as a function, but not as a single value unless restricted to one set of circumstances.

    Well, I'm not planning to drop my shiny new FFH from a helicopter any time soon ;)

    I agree that its overhead - its the overhead of any draw on the battery. And you're right, the amount of overhead is due to circumstances - the overhead of any electrical activity going on in the car - A/C, "back EMF", headlights, etc. You would have different overhead when you turned the A/C on vs off for example.

    I would say that it is dependent on speed, if the ICE is on because you are going over 4x mph there will be a true glide mpg from that.

    Why do you say its a fallacy to try and quantify it? It may not be one number but its measurable.

    ok now this is not the 2010, this is the SPM, but had to fillup so tank is fresh. purposely took a route at a time of day (10 AM on a Thursday) that would likely allow me to P&G.

    did as much as i could but because of traffic (which was relatively light) and terrain (small ups and downs) my pulse to glide ratio is still at best 3 to 2 and usually a bit worse than that. was pulsing between 30 to 40 mph

    so as you can see, wont win a mileage contest, but still happy with what i can get....just as an FYI, on the 2010, i can do at least 10-15 mpg better driving the same way
