sorry for posting 10000 miles early i couldn't wait to tell the prius chat members never did the trans axle oil didn't know i needed to do that but i will look into it i try to take good care of it cause i still owe another year of payments and i cant sell it cause nobody will give $$$$ with 190000 miles
I wouldn't worry about 1 quart in 5,000 miles at all. We bought a brand new 2001 Volkswagon New Beetle several years ago. After we started putting some miles on it, I discovered that it was burning about 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles! A brand new car! I checked with the VW dealer and the VW Vortex user site and discovered that this was "normal" for that model 2.0L gas engine! So 1 quart/5000 miles on a Prius with 190,000 miles? My old Beetle (now deceased) could only dream about that!
Pearl uses about 1 litre in the 8000 km oil change interval, from new. That's about 5000 mi for those metrically challenged. She uses Mobil 1 5W30 with 1 litre of Mobil 1 10W30 (using it up as it was left over from the anti-Prius). Some of that -may- be in the filter, but not a litre! It's too small for that. It's normal for engines to burn about that much oil. They may burn more for the first oil change interval, then tend to burn the same amount for years (unless some damage occurs). They start burning excessive oil when the rings get too thin or get overheated and don't seal any more (loss of oil ring tension). The compression rings are sealed by combustion gas pressure, but the oil rings rely on spring tension. Pearl isn't fully broken in yet. Only 25,000 km so far. I suspect she will be totally obsolete long before she wears out.
I never bothered to read it, but GM published a white paper not too long ago explaining why high oil consumption is a "good thing" (tm), indicative of a good engine .
Sandman, awesome ! Google for a TopGear show where they try to destroy a HiLux. it is hilarious, and the reason I forgive that show for the remainder of their ..uhh.. slanted point of view.
Uhhhh....did I miss something? Isn't this thread about getting 200,000 miles on a single Prius, not multiple ones combined? This kind of reminds me of those business that have "over 20 years of experience", when they've only been open 5 years, because they have 20 employees who each have a small amount of experience.
I guess then my 1987 will last until I die as I only use it now for heavy lifting that doesn't happen often. That 10k oil change interval is interesting for all these years. I guess it doesn't break down if not done on schedule religiously I had an old Audi diesel before my Pri, I doubt I changed the oil in the last 60k of its life and still running just fine.
Sorry, but you'll just have to contend with those of us crashing the party using multiples. In my case... 59,827 on the Classic... 118,030 on the Iconic... 0 on the 2010... means I'll hit "200,000" right around my 10th Anniversary of Prius ownership (next September). It's our way of endorsing the technology. Our ownership longevity is different, but still demonstrates product condifence. So there! .
Well, I guess that usbseawolf will need to start a newer thread, with the title "200,000 Miles on One Car" club, since that was the original intent of his thread, I think!
The audience is changing anyway. Generational transistions do that. It did last time. Have you noticed the dramatic change in posts recently? The 2010 dominates already. Fortunately, some of those members bound to reach significant milestones are the very ones embracing the new generation and helping it to establish a foothold. And rather than lose them entirely... .
The "generational transition" in indeed interesting to watch for me, a Prius newbie. Coming in on the end of the G2 generation, it's fun to watch those moving to the G3. They have a chance to be excited about their new G3s, just like I am about my new G2. Thankfully, I have benefited from the knowledge of those who have been with the G2 for some time.....
I hope those people posting a combined total of 200,000 plus miles have driven every mile themselves and haven't had help in achieving this from another driver like a spouse or other family member. I always thought the ultimate show of faith in the product would be to keep a car even though the odometer read in excess of 200,000 miles not to replace a vehicle with a new one when it had under 120,000 miles on the clock. Even a serial Geo owner could achieve 200,000 miles if they bought enough Geos. I'm in favour of a new thread called, "I have driven over 200,000 miles in Prius!" and save this one for people with enough faith in the vehicle to keep driving it past 200,000 miles on the odometer even if they bought the car used. How about a thread, "I have driven over 200,000 miles in Toyotas." I'd qualify for that one easy.
i agree totally, the site is moving towards the 2010 rapidly... in fact, what is an "Iconic?" oh heck, let me go out to the driveway and remind myself...
'Service history' of the car. Spark Plugs at 50,000 + 150,000. Replaced with NGK G-power Platinum. $3 each Engine Coolant at 150,000. Replaced with Zerex 'Extreme?' good for 150k Miles apparently. ~$8 Inverter Coolant Pump Failed at 168,000. Repaired at Fred Haas Toyota, Spring Tx. ~$300 including Toyota Antifreeze/coolant. Inverter Coolant - Changed with Pump obviously.... Transaxle Fluid changed at 169,000, replaced with non-toyota fluid. dont remember the brand but it was supposed to be 'same as'. 12v Battery lasted until 175,000. Replaced with Gold-Duralast 51R-DLG ($90) + New battery terminals ($5) Oil has been changed every 5-7.5K miles. I have used conventional, semi-synthetic and synthetic. I have used 0w-20 (Winter time only) all the way upto 20w-50. (Summer time only) I do all my own oil changes and I experience NO LOSS OF OIL. I fill it to 1/2 way on the dip and 7.5k miles later its 1/2 way still. Air filter changed about every 30-40k miles. Wish Id bought a K&N. Cabin filter changed twice - Which is definately not enough. I have not changed the pcv valve yet- but I have had it in the glove box for the last 50000 miles. Lastly I have run out of Gas 10-15 times, drove as far as I could before the car shut down. Then waited a couple of minutes, started the car again. Drove it again until the car shut down, and then repeated this until I could get into a gas station or finally couldnt get the car to start anymore. Add ~3 gallons of gas and it starts perfect. The battery is 100% original, I cant say that the battery was affected at all. Things I dont like about the car. The rear cup holder is a piece of junk. It falls off whenever I try to use it. I believe the problem is because of the middle passenger headrest hitting it and damaging the clips. That IMO is a design flaw, not user fault. The glovebox buttons are peeling, so is the drivers upper door card area. The drivers door card is because of my arm resting on it for thousands of miles. The tires wear quickly.............although everyone knows this by now. The homelink mirror is way too big. Flipping it upside down means I cant see very far behind me. Im 6ft 4, maybe it doesnt affect shorter people? The rear passenger head space, like most comparable size cars, is too low for me to sit in the back. The paint on the front and rear bumper has been peeling since before 100,000 miles. The hood is pitted with little dents because of the lightweight metal used. The windshield was hit on two occasions causing massive cracks both times. Ive never had a windshield break so easily.
